I was thinking something along the same lines but I think it would be bad for the playa environment. yes?

Now that's the best idea I've heard all morning!

Guess I'm going to have to renew my subscription to "Popular Mechanics"
...but it seemed like such a good idea at the time...

I wonder how many times a hovercraft has been on the cover of PM....that, or an autogyro.......A favorite Junkyard Wars episode, to be sure.

Hovercraft? On the playa? You would set off EPA monitors for fine particulate emissions halfway across the continent from all the dust you would kick up.

Here's some examples (very large examples but they illustrate the point) of the dust and spray depending on what surface is under you. Can you imagine what one would be like on the playa?

Why would you wanna? It'd be cheaper to put together a group of folks and call yourselves the BRC Synchronized Leaf Blower Brigade.

Same effect, less $, probably more 'interaction' with your neighbors - especially if you gifted them the luxury of having all that pesky dust blown away from their camp. Not to mention from inside their tents.

I've seen small hovercraft at bman before. Lots of dust and little forward motion. Most got parked after a few attempts.

A hovercraft wouldn't make any dust if the Playa was wet. So the solution is obvious: mount a water sprayer in the front of the hovercraft to wet the Playa just before you travel over it! Voila! No dust. This can also be adopted to bicycles and other mutant vehicles. And for those people who just cannot wait for (frog poo) water trucks, they can mount a similar device on their head and run "behind it" to get that fresh showered feeling anytime!

Ditto, '99, squirrel-cage fan, small gen, sheet of ply on an inverted inflatable pool or raft.

How dusty is it?

All I know is it comes in quartz.

I know it'd be WAY too dusty on a dry day, but I wonder if a hovercraft would work on the playa if it rained? Or would the ultra-slimy and sticky playa mud muck it up too much, and/or be thrown everywhere? Wheeled vehicles sure don't fare too well.
