5:00 and Edinburgh - 40 hexayurts in a village? Who?
Hi, I'm Vinay Gupta, designer of the hexayurt. There was a really big theme camp with a lot of hexayurts, thirty or forty of them, at 5:00 and Edinburgh. Here's a picture:

Does anybody know anything about this camp? Any contact info / web pages / notes / more pictures?
Really great work.

I don't know who it was, but I heard it was a fully catered camp for a birthday party...not sure if that is rumor or fact, however. There had to be at least 40! We came upon them on early entry Friday, a lot of them were already up and there were stacks of R-max panels on flat bed trucks waiting to be assembled. Cool and creepy at the same time
It wasn't the Hexayurt folks. Supposedly there were 40+ of them out there and a paid crew to set them up. The camp was a semi-catered affair and meant to serve as a week long birthday party which suggests a high hipster quotient in the assemblage.
I'm sure the folks at Hexayurt could put that money to better use. They build shelters very similar to ones in the photo but they're actual working design prototypes for emergency shelters.
Hexayurt represents a cool group of people with a damn fine vision of designing low cost, portable shelters to be deployed in disaster zones all around the world. They've been to the event multiple times using different shelter designs to field test in the harshness of the desert. I can assure you these folks are anything but creepy. You can read about their ideas and philosophy here:

Thank you Vinay Gupta.
GravyBrain has used our hexayurt at the last 3 BurningMan's. In 2009 we actually had two with a shared wall and submarine door to go between and separate the yurts. Both had AC units run by our Honda 3000. They rocked, and many people wanted to check them out.
In 2010 we had ours up by Saturdays light rain and it easily survived the wind storm Saturday and the downpour on Monday.
Camp Upsie Dasium/Camp GravyBrain will bring our yurts to our 4th burn next year.

Yup, 50th birthday party, delicata squash app, lamb skewers, aged balsamic/dark chocolate truffles...... hmmmm.... I may have to rethink my peanut butter, cheese in a can, townhouse cracker diet for next year.Isotopia wrote:It wasn't the Hexayurt folks. Incriminating video on the festivities here:

You don't have to be skinny, naked and under 30 to be a Hottie!
If it helps, we will be bringing Wonderful Recipes to burning Man in 2011..
Most of the crew are Vegan, but there will be meat options..
i am looking at the possibility of bringing proper dry cured English Bacon from free range rare breed pigs to cook - bacon butties in the morning! Yum Yum!!
Anyway, interesting article he wrote about his musings on social networking policies and staff feedback... seems the real world haters get in a bit too much on the action
