For me

1) Lack of halfassery. If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right.

I was at preheat, they constructed a big oven thing for the burn. When I asked if it was sound enough for my 300+ lb(at the time) ass to walk around on, the response was "yea, it's fine." And it was.

2)Openness. This needs no explanation.

3) The art of the remix. The creativity is amazing, and not just the art projects. Want some funky shoes? Cut up some bunny slippers. Anything and everything can be funky-fied.

The true burner culture and how genuine they are. Restored my son's faith in humanity. He thought I was a rarity in how giving and caring that I was. When I took him to his first burn "wow, can't believe how true hearted these people are." Granted, in the wave of bodies ebbing and flowing at the event there are those that just surf the culture. I seek out the ones that are immersed in it.

I like how there are so many different cultures co-existing out there without attempting to enforce their culture beyond their borders. Hushville has no generators, but they don't go around bitching at other camps/villages for having them, for example. You may express whatever culture you like within the confines of your camp but have no right to enforce your culture on someone else. I wished people here behaved that way.

This springs from a misunderstanding of one of the Ten Principles.

People have distilled decommodification into "all commerce is bad". Not so, and one look at the resources edition of JackRabbit speaks shows how much Burning Man supports those providing goods and services to burners. What is protected is their trademark, although derivative works such as man-schwag are allowed. There's commerce on the playa, the BMORG throws the party, they make the rules on what is and is not allowed there. There's subtle (well ...) commerce here on eplaya, I'm one of the main watchdogs for that. You can ask for money for a rideshare, but you can't sell panda shoes. You can recommend a good deal, you can't sell your own shit. And so on.

The gift economy is an ideal. For one week, we can pretend it works, and it is lovely. The lack of vendors and advertising banners is refreshing. We can incorporate gifting into daily life, but most of us are consumers and readily admit the fact. Others do their best to live by the ideal, if they can pull it off, great. Life is compromise. These days, I can barely stand to go to "art fairs"!

Decommodification
In order to preserve the spirit of gifting, our community seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. We stand ready to protect our culture from such exploitation. We resist the substitution of consumption for participatory experience.

The thing i like most about burner culture is how people find ways to:

~twist something religious, mundane, or all-to-common into something riotously funny

~make something that's brilliant, yet simple

~take something that's small and cute and multiply it by 1000 and make it into something that's huge and awesome

1-The insane art. The fact that no matter how fucked up and weird an idea I come up with, there are a thousand+ on playa that I would never in a billion years come up with.

2-People. The fact that I can meet someone in BRC, hang out with them for 1-9 days, and now have someone that is a friend/sibling/soulmate for life. A wise muppet named Gonzo once said, "There's not a word yet for old friends that just met." I never really understood that phrase to it's fullest until I came to BRC.

3-The fact that I can get away with everything I do & say out there, and not only still have friends, but have friends that love me even more for it.

Oh, and the snark. I love the snark.

Yggy- this talk is not allowed. You, my friend, are fabulous, and the feeling of being "impotent" (lord I hate that word....) here is mutual. I always thought of myself as a third-stringer on eplaya, then I get to the MnG and discover people are excited that I was there.

and, therein, lies my point, my joy, at what this "event/society" is........"culture"? well, perhaps.

But, the fact is, (I speak for myself, but, perhaps, for others), There are so many here, I look up to, admire, as such.

And, in the sense we all look at ourselves, and others, only through our own eyes, I see those folks as people to emulate, to learn from, and to appreciate.
And, in that sense, I feel the "underling".
And, perhaps, the truth is, we all bring strengths (and perversions) to the table, in our own way.

But, the fact that so many here, folks who've been here much longer, and are undoubtedly more educated, and worldly, will still take one, such as myself into "the fold", and, show kindness and friendship........
well........

that's just swell.

Even when we don't agree, most of us can still find common ground and respect anothers opinion, although, maybe not understand it.
