Is the Water Truck your shower?
I did it last year when the truck went by my place. Knew it was pond water. So what? Water in nature has micro organizisms.
Geez!
Yes, can see the glitter or soap being a problem, have read on this site that some folks even fret about hair getting on the playa.
Also of course correctness (or not!) of attire, music or lack thereof, electricity usage & how it is wrought, foodstuffs, and even intent of why I one might be there!
I find it somewhat daunting that there is such circumspection. So mostly I say FUCK YOU.

Yes, sadly, there is even CAST SYSTEM
at Burningman over NOT wearing shoes
but carrying them
while running behind the water truck,
(boo-hoo, he has worn his feet off)
versus WEARING shoes while running
behind the water truck & making larger FOOTPRINTS.
YOU ARE WRONG to be alive.

Tut-tut my alter-egos!
Though I would concurr there is too-plenty of political correctness for those whom would be bound, the ethos of "Leave No Trace" does not fall in that category. It is more than politically correct to leave no trace.
ARe the organizisms which rinse from my un-lathered body are more harmful to the playa than the pond-water rinse I'm running behind?
Gee! I am bad to the bone! Judge me!

I don't want you to think i'm on the "Attack Techno Mode" but, I am ignorant, since the playa is basically composed of phosphatic alkaloids can tell me how soap is going to affect it?technopatra wrote:Right, your instincts are correct. No soapy water should ever hit the playa, biodegradable or not.

I am guessing those spots on the playa where soap is... is much cleaner playaApollonaris Zeus wrote:I don't want you to think i'm on the "Attack Techno Mode" but, I am ignorant, since the playa is basically composed of phosphatic alkaloids can tell me how soap is going to affect it?technopatra wrote:Right, your instincts are correct. Contrary to BM folk wisdom, the playa is not lifeless. In the winter little water creatures hatch ala brine shrimp. I still don't know if these provide a significant food source to water fowl on the flyway . . . But "vernal pond" issues may apply. And the problem with dropping anything in a lake is that it could transport all over it.Apollonaris Zeus wrote: I don't want you to think i'm on the "Attack Techno Mode" but, I am ignorant, since the playa is basically composed of phosphatic alkaloids can tell me how soap is going to affect it?

Yes, and the water is so soft you wouldn't need to use soap to wash with it.theCryptofishist wrote: But "vernal pond" issues may apply.
And yes, when water is present during migrations lots of shorebird do feed one those little creatures.
Oil and coolant leaks from cars are a much greater concert.
But hey, I can change and adapt, when little water creatures can't!

Pyramid lake is part of a primary migratory flyway. The playa is not. Even though the represent what was once part of the same lacustrine (lake building) system.
Brine shrimp are a big staple for many of the migrating fowl who love the little wigglers.
Oil and coolant leaks are not a great concern but are issues that the BM project are concerned about in a preemptive sort of way because of unsubstantiated accusations by opponents of the event making refernces to non-existent problems and catagorizing them as fact.

Which do find worse for the playa environment- Oil or Soap?Badger wrote:By taking the step and assuming the responsibility of being able to back up with facts that which you (or anyone else) would posit as truth or fact.Damn with so many literalists on the playa how does art ever evolve to the next stage.
My answer- Oil! 12,000 vehicles parked on the playa for a week!
Do high speed cars crash?
My answer- yes!
How many crashed vehicles leaked oil?
My answer- perhaps a handful or two!
Compared the amount of oil from crashed vehicles that to the number of parked vehicles at BM. Insignificant!
Which should be a greater concern to the Bmorg- Oil or Soap!
The pollutant in Soap is phosphates. The Playa is composed of phosphates, not oil!
Now lets talk about the waste from thousands of solid rockets fuel engines left on the playa from those users.
Not!
Lud, Erh, Chist = ludircrous= absurdly ridiculous and "NOT" a heavy metal band in this usage.

I don't know about any of this scientific stuff. All I know is that the people who run the event asked me to not piss on the playa and to pack out what I pack in, including gray water.
Will thrity thousand people pissing and washing on the playa effect it? Why take the chance. Not like it's a huge burden to make an evap pond and use a piss bottle when a portapotty's not close by.
I can't control high speed cars or other peoples oil leaks but I can ensure that my impact on the playa is minimized. It's that whole personal responsibilty thing baby.
