I am looking forward to coming to The Playa this next year in 2011... I am hoping to network with other Jewish burners who want to have a Kosher camp. I would love to join a theme camp or village that is Kosher minded

not sure if there would be many kosher jews at the burn, but there were some at the east coast regional, well a few any way, im a jew not in practice but in identity. i am actually an atheist. but i appreciate kosher and understand the difficulties that keeping kosher on the playa would impose. i think you will just need to bring all of the food you want to eat for yourself, but who knows maybe you will get lucky and can combine forces with other kosher jews on the playa. anyway good luck to you and may you have a great burn!

Okay, as the local vocal Jew, I'll hop in:

There are multiple Jewish camps out there, but I don't know off-hand if any of them post here. You can check the official theme camp list from this year (and maybe even 2009), but I don't know if they were registered camps or just collections of friends. If you can find the "Who What Where" from this year you also might find camps that way. I know some of them do have Shabbat services.

As for keeping kosher- not hard, depending on how strict you are. If you're very strict, avoid gifted food unless it's in packaging you can check. That means you need to plan for all your own food needs- again, not difficult. I'm sort-of-kosher by default as I'm mostly vegan and I don't have any problems at all with eating well on playa.

If you are willing to turn a blind eye towards the fact that no kitchen other than yours is actually kosher, you can eat quite well out there. As long as things don't have dairy (or meat) in them, I take them in the spirit they are given. Big however to this- bacon is everywhere, and there's no way around that being treif. If you take food from others you'll want to make sure that the pans etc weren't used for cooking it.

I have been talking to some Chabbad Rabbis who might also want to come. I have a lot of project ideas I want to work on and I am looking for other like-minded people to get a Jewish Village together... For my theme camp I want to have a Tefilin Station, 24/7 Standing Minyon with a lounge, and at least one sefer Torah. I want to coordinate with the other Jewish camps and see if we can get a large Kaballah Shabbat going... Also I know that dogs are not allowed... What about camels?

I am not sure how Chabad Rabbis would do on the playa. I know that every year there is a hunt to try to get a minyon together. There was the Black Rock JCC camp there a few years back.
Wiit he orthodox rebbis be in the black and white garb? They will fit in ok, but the suits will get dusty!

It would depend on the Rabbi. If they're more "liberal" they should be fine out there, just like the Reverend I met a couple of years ago. He was having a great time. The nudity didn't bug him at all- he said how could something God created be bad?

I don't think that someone being religious precludes them from attending or enjoying the event. I do think that if said religious person expects everyone else to live to their standards they probably will have a miserable time.

For some reason I actually got called "rabbi" this year, and I was in a t-shirt & clown pants.

All sounds good "but".. The Burning Man playa is like uncontroled time travel.. Suggest you plan a small camp and come see how it works out the first year..

I don't know if camels are specifically forbidden. I do know that the one known instance of camels brought to the playa is infamous in the annals of "just didn't work out." Remember, you will have to clean up the animal's waste--"it's organic" will not cut it. Also, I hear that they are bad tempered and gladly spit at humans. Do you want to keep it under control in playa crowds and spend your time heaping apologies on anyone who is offended by the moisture?

I had the pleasure of being invited to Shabat dinner on the playa. Thank you Camp Lev. I think any sort of spiritual observance takes on an extra special something on the playa. It's good to be there, and when I say thank you there, I really mean it.

Hey BaalTeshuva,

I'd be interested in this, very actually, this will be my first time on the Playa, I seriously hope I make it there, having a camp where I can share food expenses would be seriously helpful and in my mind no way in conflict with the openness and adventurousness of the Playa.

So I'm open to helping out or if there is one already, I'm game to joining.

Also since this'll be my first time, I'm open to listening to all advice. (key word, listening :) )

I knew a girl in NYC (an excellent artist, she made lino and block prints using huge printing presses) who had a lesbian sister. The sister was a rabbi and had an adopted child with her partner.

I'm pretty sure liberal rabbis are out there.

On the other side, I lived in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, which may be the center of black fuzzy hats and curly chops (outside of B&H or Adorama, of course).
