My sister lives in Upper Mill.
Read the board and carefully think about "stuff." Perhaps the largest need on this end will be bicycles.
Say hi to the Curry Mile next time you're there.

The issue with buying old bikes is, depending on when and where you land, that they are harder to find the closer you get to Gerlach and the closer to the event it is. There are some work-arounds, someone has a rental service or something. I just thought it would be helpful to know that now, instead of last week of next august.

Thanks for the advice on bikes- we would be flying to San Fran, and picking up the camper from there.. so it makes sense I suppose, to try and get bikes in San Fran - then after the event we could donate them to somewhere before we fly back - to be honest, I'd like to get out there well before the burn week to hook up with people anyway - I know we have friends coming from Toronto who pretty much do BM every year now after discovering its fantastic-ness a few years back..
I suppose plan F would be to see if they are travelling with a camper and if they could source local bikes on our behalf!
I'm certainly not going to try and get my £700 worth of mountain bike anywhere near the Playa :?

You might want to consider thrift stores and used bike stores in the valley (Sacramento, for instance). or maybe not; maybe they get scoured as clean as San Francisco.
Don't forget locks.

I heard Reno area wal marts started selling out of everything close/previous week to the burn, this may need to be confirmed by someone from Reno
I go to Reno once in a while and I noticed cruiser bikes were selling out 2 weeks early. Reno wal mart had a great front handlebar basket, tail/brake lights and head lights, for under $100 usd! Bought seperately, bike $55, basket 12, lights 20..ttl...$87.
They had a cool vintage fender heavy design that could be covered with interesting stickers, representing your home town, wordly travels, burning man 2011! Etc
I'd look up online and see the model before you buy?! for 2011
Maybe have a bike or two waiting for you at a store ahead of time is the best, put one on layaway? Some stores offer layaway, seems yo be the best choice to me.
Add a lot of leds and blinkies and some other personal touches you're good to go day & night IMHO
By RV/rental car etc, you could do this bike project in the parking lot of the store or bike shop or wherever pretty much. Not much rain around that time of year. :)
I read this info on eplaya or on craigslist
"around 9th street 2 or 3 families sell many used bikes and so far only one happens to know about the burn, we're just spreading the word to help everyone out"
this is good to know in case thrift stores and wal marts are wiped out of this n that from sf bay area all the way to Reno! Reno get's hit the hardest! Craigslist has bikes for sale also.
I wouldn't rent a bike, too much hassle imho.
Perhaps it would be great to arrange your gear pile shipped to a storage unit or another address ahead of time.

I was thinking about getting stuff shipped ahead of time - even my Medieval Pavilion that I use for Living history over here might end up being cheaper to ship over to my friends cousins place in San Fran rather than renting an RV that charges and extra 500USD on top of the rental price JUST to go to BM!! ..
I'm considering all the options! :)
And thanks for the invaluable advice on bikes - I'd probably purchase a cheapy and have them keep it for me to pick up at the shop.. good call

HI Tracy,
yes, you "can" get a warm welcome.....
it's best, to make your own "introduction" thread topic, though.
make sure, you have thick skin, and, do research, before asking questions easily answered by a little reading of the survival guide, first timers guide, threads here, or, info on the main site.
but, most folks here are fun, but, do love to tease......
welcome
