so thankful to my new community

Post by lusciouslove » Mon Sep 20, 2010 10:44 pm

still smiling like a fool from my first year on the playa. i did a ton of research here on eplaya but never officially introduced myself. the snark made me a bit nervous but i now understand the motivation to keep people on their toes and aware.
i want to thank you all so much for the advice and tips and attitude! it made my experience so amazing and life changing. i flew 3000 miles and never felt i was without anything. the community provided anything i overlooked.

many many thanks.

Welcome. Glad you had a good first Burn.

3000 miles from where? I have great respect for long distance Burners. Well, that goes for all, but when you come from so far with so little to do so much--cool.

And you'll be back...

i flew from new jersey to san diego, and then trekked to BRC from there. beautiful adventure!

the toughest thing was trying to pack everything in one checked luggage and carry on. i bought a lot of supplies in san diego and most of that stuff got gifted to my friends once we got back.

i am trying to figure out what my best/most economical option is for next year. drive cross-country in a cargo van? mail out stuff? or just make do, like this year?

wish there was more of a Jersey burner scene. NY gets all the good parties

Aw, go on..... REALLY, go on!
Welcome to the boards. So, you're from Jersey and you didn't understand the attitude on here? You must be joking!

For next year, why not consider 2 50lb. suitcases, and anything else you may need, you can buy once you fly out to the west coast? You can also ship a few boxes ahead with essential stuff. If you drive a truck, it tends to be overloaded with things you most likely will nevr use, and then have to drive it back to Jersey. Now that you know what things are all about, I'm sure you'll figure it all out.
Again, welcome and make yourself at home here.

hehe shambala. good point

in my opinion, jersey attitude is rooted in fear and misery so that is what i was used to, and that went against what my preconceived notions on what BM was all about. so i continued to read on here and got better context to what the attitude was really meant for. and then of course i went to the desert and saw the beauty, the love, the community and the spirit. the burner attitude is one rooted in consciousness, truth, and tough love. and i certainly can relate to and appreciate that!!!!

Hello fellow Jersey Burner! I too made the trek out to my first burn this year. My girlfriend currently lives in L.A., so i flew out there, and then we made the 10+ hours drive to the playa. It was not easy at all. Thankfully she was able to obtain the main things we needed that i could not bring, such as bikes, a tent, coolers, and a whole mess of other stuff. Here's my luggage before i left Jersey:
Image
My carry-on was essentially just clothes. I wasn't going out there just for BM though, i stayed for an entire month. My checked bad was crammed with the most absurd mix of things one could imagine. I had all kinds of weird stuff and can't believe my bag didnt get searched at Philly. With all the electronics, batteries, tools, masks, etc that i had, i thought for sure i was going to get that little TSA tag in my bag, lol.But nope, went right on through with no problems. That flight out to L.A. in order to make it to the burn, was the first time i'd ever even been on an airplane and really the only time i've ever gone any further then PA or NY.Right out of the gate i'm flying 3,000 miles to the other side of the country. hah. it was a cool experience, thats for sure. was kind of a bummer to do it alone though, but no biggie.

I had considered mailing stuff ahead to my girlfriend, but the biggest problem there is weight. If you've got light stuff to send out, like clothes, costumes, that sort of thing, it may be worth it, but shipping gets costly as the weight goes up. I wanted to ship my tools and what not ahead, but it just wouldnt have been worth it.

Also, it was too late for me since we decided to do the burn just a few weeks before the actual event started, but i believe there is a theme camp that has a big truck somewhere in NJ or PA, i cant recall, and they will sell you space on their truck to drive your stuff out there for you. you drop it off, they bring it out there, you meet them on the playa and get your crap, then at the end of the burn, you bring it back to them, theyll haul it back to Jersey in the truck and then you go pick up your stuff. Might be worth it if you're bring a lot of gear. They sell you like 10 SqFt of space or something.

Depending on what this year brings, and if i can even get out to the playa, my girlfriend might be living out here by then, and we may consider a cross-country adventure. Though, it'd probably be very expensive crashing at motels when necessary, buying food, gas, who-knows-what-else along the way.

I'd also be interested to see how some other cross-country burners do it.

YOu could take a slice off the price by camping on your way out, although getting a hotel room in Reno to have bed sleep and a shower before shopping for supplies and driving that final lap to the event.
Oh, and a cooked meal at one of hte buffets.

I want to echo your sentiment! Thanks to eplaya and the local burners I've met.

A local (unofficial as yet) regional group cornburners.net and the Midwest Burners midwestburners.com have also been great resources and very helpful. I was invited to set up a MnG for Cornburners this Saturday evening, can't wait to meet some experienced burners face to face.

This community of open minded, creative, self reliant people is very inspiring and I'm SO glad I decided to reach out and try to be a part of it.

Yay us!

You'd do better to eat at one of the restaurants in Reno- there's some really good ones, shockingly even for us vegetarians if needed.

I've even found a good taqueria around the corner from the SilverCircusMegaCasinoPlex that beats the overpriced boring food from their buffet.

Jstep- go to your profile & enable BBS & smiley's- your quotes & urls will appear correctly. I think URL's also need the full address: "http://www...." etc etc

I'm sure you're right, Eric. I don't know Reno as well as I might. On some level, it does not break my stony little heart.

Eric, they are enabled. Not sure what the issue is. I've posted pics, urls, videos... this is the first time I've seen the codes appear instead of the intended message.

One solution for the long distance traveler is to fly Southwest Airlines
like I did in 08. I had 3 large suitcases. The first 2 were free and
the baggage charge on the third is a reasonable $25.00.
Schlepping all this stuff around is a pita.

Of course you still got to get heavy stuff in Reno, Sacramento or
Sf like bikes, water, food, coolers, rebar, PVC or conduit.
Thrift stores, Winco Foods (cash only) and wally world are your friends.

hey badfish where you at in NJ? I'm in northern jerz. sounds you are a bit south from me since you flew out of Philly.

I, too, giggled at the assortment of items in my luggage and would've been at a loss for words had i had to open my carry-on :)

my friends in san diego hooked me up with a bike, tent, tarps and air mattress. I used to live in LA for 10 years so i have a good network of well-equipped friends there so preparing for next year will hopefully be pretty painless.

even though i may do what Cryptofish suggested and camp my way out west. I have some friends in Reno and had my pre and post-shower with a meal there.
