Two way radios

I'm thinking of bringing some 2-way radios this year (to be able to find family and friends - when necessary, eg meals times, etc).
Yes, they are good to keep in contact with other members - but is there too much chatter (other two-way radio conversations) to be able to make reasonable communication easy?

-- and i remember: "where are you?", "i'm over here"...
"we're right in front of the briiiiggghhhhtttt thiii......."
when weird is happening, radios don't seem to work right.

I kept having serious crosstalk and chatter last year on ours and finally we turned them off. It might be worth stepping up to the slightly more expensive ones with the additional bands that require the easy to obtain license. That would give you more range and put you up out of the crosstalk frequencies that the masses use.

And late at night on the playa...even the best technology gets a little wacky as shitmouse mentions. That happened to us too.

We had several for our group ... I got sick of mine squawking all the time with crosstalk. The one time we did get in touch with other campmates, they wanted us to come see something or other that was on the other side of the city and we were already headed elsewhere.

So we indeed turned them off. What they did work fairly well for was communication between caravaning cars (hey, we're going to stop, we think your bike fell off). Only one car had a CB, and we took that out for legroom that trip.

radioes/talkies just annoyed me, but then, I'm just as easily annoyed as I am amused.

Mine did not work. Too many kids on the radio. It was however alot of fun listening to them. :lol:

I used gmrs radios and they definitely had less chatter than the FRS radios. since the price of GMRS radios are now basically on par with FRS, there may be more chatter this year. While the CB radio bands are basically worthless because of mindless chatter in the city, maybe out on the playa they will be more useful? You can buy 5 watt handheld CBs for $15 on ebay- though they are bulky in comparison with GMRS radios.

You know there is a lot of chatter, but they are still usable, just find a station other than 4-20.

Tip: the #1 rule when using a radio is to state your location "Hey it's Mike I'm at the Flying Gerbil Shooter! You there Jim?"

that way if one person can hear but can not talk, they can track you down.

Believe me nothing is worse than spending a couple of hours hearing "Jim where are you?" "Jim how come you are not answering" "Are you mad at us Jim?" "Jimmmmmm?"
