HERE'S SOME HELPFUL TIPS FROM AN EXPERIENCED BURNER:

1) Make sure that piece of junk yer drivin is up to the trip in the first place! That 30 year old junker you've been schleppin around town in may be fine IF you're near civilization but once you get outta Reno all bets are off!
2) Get the thing checked out before you head out into the big empty and allow your mechanic time to do the job properly, don't wait til the last minute and do NOT rush yer mechanic! Poor planning on your part does NOT MAKE IT AN EMERGENCY ON HIS/HER PART!

3) Do NOT overload your vehicle! Your poor beast is gonna have enough to do hauling you sorry butt up over mountains and out through the desert so be kind to it!

4) Depending on your comfort level and experience, carry tools and spares! Don't know how to change a flat? LEARN HOW, LEARN NOW!
if you're towing a trailer make sure you have tire tools and a spare for the trailer as well.

5) Stuff to bring for yer car... FUSES, COOLANT 2 GALLONS MIN, SPARE TIRE, SPARE BELT(S), LIGHTBULBS, HEADLIGHT(1), OIL 3-4 QTS, TOOLS!
Costco has a really neat, pretty comprehensive, tool set for just under $100.00 in a blow-mold case SAE and Metric GO GET IT!

6) For you and passengers, WATER and FOOD for at least 2 days! If you're coming out early traffic on some of the roads can be pretty sparse and there is NO CELL SERVICE ONCE YOU GET OUTTA RENO!

7) SLOW THE FUCK DOWN! Black Rock City will be here when you get here and it's not a race so take your time. GET SOME REST BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT. STOP every once in awhile and give yourself and your passengers a break.

Check under the hood each and every time you get gas! Can't tell the number of times this mantra has saved me a major melt-down. Don't know what to check or how? READ YOUR OWNERS MANUAL! LEARN THIS SHIT BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT!

9) HIT THE DAMN BUNNIES, DO NOT SWERVE FOR THE BUNNIES! There is simply not enough room on the shoulders to safely avoid them. Do NOT hit the cows though!

10) DPW Auto Shop Is NOT a resource for participants, They are there strictly to repair and maintain DPW FLEET VEHICLES ONLY! I don't care WHAT anyone else tells you. (Rangers, BLM,LEOS they don't know shit) Be prepared to take care of your own damn vehicle!

Here's some more advice from another experienced burner...keep your advice to yourself. Those that need it, won't heed it; and those that would heed it don't need it in the first place.

Or wild horses. A friend hit one in a night time escape he made in the middle of Sat night to avoid some traffic. Believe he was drivng over his headlights, don't know, though he often pulls a way off me when I drive the limit or slow on hills. Did $3500 worth of damage to the truck but, through hard work and radical self reliance, the trailer is completely functional.

The horse was killed, and nobody had a good time...

Besides all of that, he was eating cheese. Oh, not the easy stuff, cheddar, mozz, jack that is in easy to handle chunks or even the crumbly style-like bleu. No, the soft, almost runny kind, that you have to force onto a cracker and get into your mouth in one swoop, or risk it running down your lip, your chin and, then, drip onto your one of a kind, specially printed on the plays, T-shirt.

Yeah, that cheese has a dark side. And don't forget it.

Before you load up yore jalopy, take out all the emergency gear. After you get yore tents and glo-sticks loaded up, THEN you put yore emergency gear ON TOP! You do not want to be unloading all your sparkle-pony crap on the roadside in teh unfortunate occurance of a flat or somesuch.

I think I'd rather hit a horse/cow than swerve and roll over. I think you're better protected in a head-on collision than a rollover. Vehicle is screwed either way.

No good can come from such a collision. The problem with hitting them dead on is that they can come up the hood and into the wind shield. Or through. I wouldn't swerve, though, either. Where those horses and cows are often on the worst roads. No place to be going for an off road drive. Hit the brakes hard, use your anti lock to help you steer, just a bit, to miss or strike a glancing blow. Little time to think. Good to discuss it and prepare, in your mind, in advance, as to what you would do.

1) Almost everyone overloads their vehicle. Just make sure everything is strapped down properly and go slower than you normally would.

2) Make sure you have a spare and all of the tools no matter what. If you don't know how to change it yourself, a passerby or the AAA driver will help.

3) Don't buy extra belts and hoses to carry - install them and keep the old ones in the trunk as emergency spares. Better to not break down in the first place then find out the spares you bought were the wrong ones.

4) Don't bring extra coolant. You'll already have enough water with you and that will be enough to limp back to civilization. If your car has a known leak friggin get it fixed before you leave home! If your radiator unexpectedly blows you're going to need to get it towed anyway and coolant won't help.

5) Same with oil - one quart should be enough. If your vehicle is burning or leaking a quart every 1000 miles it is not suitable for the trip.

6) Bring a couple of days worth of food, water, and gear in case you get split up with your friends in the gear hauling vehicle, not in case you break down. Another burner will be by shortly to take you to a phone.

7) Get the good AAA service good for 100 miles towing.

Check your tire inflation! There is a little plaque in the doorjam that tells you what they should be set to.

ya I wish...does it make me a bad person if I dump in a half gallon every 200 miles?

Some cars burn a quart every thousand miles from the factory.

Some are designed that way for other reasons.

Trying to sort out an old ranger pickup, and so far I'm very impressed with it.
Getting great mileage with it. so I plan on keeping it forever.

But on certain bumps, it is absolutely diabolical, especially for someone spoiled by coil spring 5 and 6 link rear ends on wagons.

Been getting lots of bad advice, so starting asking experts.
Jason of maximum motorsports, a tuner of mustang suspensions, and also the owner of a leaf spring mustang, suggests uneven damage to the rubber on the leaf springs, causing rear end steering.
All the rubber looks good, but I think he's right.
He also recommends urethane bushings, given the new available lubricants, even if I have to use some harder than I want.

I'll be adding a rear anti-sway bar and a heavier front bar too.
And with 180,000 miles, it needs new shocks too.
His recommendation was bilsteins over kyb.

Does anyone know if the 4wd model bars will fit on the 2wd trucks?
