Get an old Toyata and blow that Ranger the fuck up.

Some cars burn a quart every thousand miles from the factory.

Some are designed that way for other reasons.

The mazda rx-7 being one of them.
a rotary! mine's an old bus with a 2-stroke detroit diesel. it burns some, drips some, blows the rest out the breathers. 50 year old engine, doing ok.

But normally, yes, adding a quart of oil at every fillup means its time for engine work.

According to gm (and perhaps others) up to a quart every 1200 miles in normal consumption for an engine.
I would disagree, but gm also considers the total life of a vehicle to be 50,000 miles.

I'd buy a toyota if they had any equivalent.

How's the suspension on the toyota with the same size bed?

The toyata has a 1 ton rear end with a 1/2 ton leaf spring, just replace the springs and you will be golden.

mine are a 79' and an 85', the 79' is my favorite.

my main concern with the Ranger is the crappy engine and even crappier drivetrain.

I’ve had an ‘82, ’84, and ’91 Toyota pickup at various times. All were the 22R in-line four cylinder engine and all went over 200K miles. I pulled, four-wheeled, and worked them all and all were still going when I either sold or traded them in. I don’t think you can destroy them. Great granny gear too.

Give me a Toyota over a ranger any day.

My '94 Mazda B4000 went to about 280,000 miles before crapping out with me. Because of that i went with a new '08 ranger. the differences were immediately apparent, they just don't make cars well anymore. Seems they do all they can do cut the cost of making vehicles while increasing the price.
I mean, plastic door handles and tailgate handle? please, 2 of them have broken already, luckily my door handle broke while still under warranty.

the old diesel Mercedes' I drive, typically go well over 300K if maintained.
One of mine is probably (odometer broke at 134K) nearing 300K
my other has 232K,
The other (maybe doesn't count, since, the head cracked, due to DPO) has about 240K

my 79' toyota has 1.2 million on it(second engine, 20R), it had 780,000 on it's first motor when I bought it from the original owner, I cracked the head and had to replace the motor because I was a dumbass.
This motor is still strong, after 10 years as an artcar also.

Hell even that Playa Frog sitting next to me has over 200,000 on it(22r)

A Mercedes Diesel (200D or 220D) held the record for the most miles on a car - I want to think it was in excess of 2 or 3 million. They made a huge deal out of it a number of years ago in their ad campaign.

I had a newer 220-D - that died at 98,500. Tranny failed (Fracking Jiffylube drained the factory 20W20 oil out of it, and refilled it with 85/140 gear oil. Assholes - NEVER trust J-Lube), then the motor compression left - the death knell on a diesel. Fracking lemon. But drove like a honey until it finally wouldn't go no mo.

I would suspect that there are a umber of 20-R powered toyotas that are on the road after several hundred thousand... it was teh right era, Toyota was building their stuff REALLY well back then, and unless you were (to quote OED) a dumbass would not quit running. Way overengineered (like the old Benzes) which is why they prolly don't build them like that anymore - they just last way too long.
