Well let me know if you do! I'll be going solo! If you bring your family maybe we could meet up!! My sister lives on Whidbey Island. I'm hoping to stay with her and her family for the weekend!

I was told though if I didn't wear a costume that I'd stick out like a sore thumb. Hmmm maybe I'll come as a sore thumb...LOL I really think I'll just be wearing jeans and a T-shirt. I was thinking about wearing something that'll represent my camp. Who knows!!

Im not costume oriented, so I wore white scrub pants and a longsleeved white pocket T-shirt.

Carry some markers with you and let the artests go to town on this outfit.

The results will suprise you.

'tis a great idea. One of my ladyfriends does that with her coveralls. Now they have some great art, and great playa memories.

And if anyone gives you shit about what you're wearing, three words: fuck off sparklepony.

Wear whatever makes you happy. For some this is only a t-shirt, some its superman underoos, some its a tutu and ammo belt, some its oven mits, some its nothing at all, some its glitter, some its gold paint, some its jeans and for some its an elaborate costume.

Since my last post I've had many ideas of what to wear! What's a sparkle pony anyway? Is it anything like a my favorite pony thingamabob??

Sparkle ponies bring two dozen costume changes but no water. They look good, but don't provide for their basic survival needs. So we have to save their candy asses from themselves, or have roast sparkle pony on Sunday.

I don't find jeans comfy at BRC other than for set up/tear down, or fire safety. There are days I wear a t shirt and jammy pants. Sleep pants can be cute and are very soft. I also like salwaar kameez, which is a loose Indian tunic with poufy pants. I do lots of skirts too, although this past year was too cold for most of them.

If you were in New York, weirdscience, I'd tell you to go one of the shops in Curry Hill. But since you are not, try google.

I'm sure that you can find patterns all over the web, as well.

Are they all made in India, or more important, are they made to fit western bodies?

And what I know about saris is the same as what I know about togas, very hard to drape right.

Sparkle Pony
A high maintenance person at the Burning Man Festival who is unprepared for the harsh camping environment and becomes a burden to their camp-mates.
Burner #1: "Can you believe that Sparkle Pony over there brought 60 costumes but only 2 gallons of water and some ramen noodles?"

Burner#2: "Yeah. They asked me where the food court was located."
LOL That is so damn funny!!!

Only because said sparkle pony didn't bring any quarters for the arcade in the food court. Everyone knows the arcade is the place to be during a whiteout.. duh..

A little tight in the arms and bust on the tunic, but the hips are very roomy. Drawstring waist on the pants. Many offer custom sew to fit at no extra cost. You can get and outfit for $30 ~50. I've only picked up one which was smaller than described, and it wasn't sold out of India. Salwaars need no draping except for the scarf, and no, I don't have dupatta drape down pat. Makes a great head wrap in a white out though.

I'll be running a costume modification and repair service on playa in 2011.. so I'll be bringing a variety of fabrics/cottons/threads etc - my business is usually making historical costumes and reproducing archaeological textiles.. but I will gift my skills whereever I can at BM..

i won't be bringing a sewing machine however.. so everything is limited to hand sewing.. so I can't create something from Notting Hill carnival in a morning unfortunately :(

But I'll help out where I can :)

There is usually a costume camp somewhere on playa that is good for donations/gifts...

In 1999, a camp called "Cross Dress for Less", provided hundreds of costunes. Theirs something for everyone out there.

YOu'll be very popular, I think. If you can team up with someone who can drive up and who brings a treadle machine, it could be stratospheric. But don't let my "Today the Esplanade, tomorrow the whole damn Playa" fantasies bother you.

In 06 I brought bagsfull (okay, bagfulls). Thrift store one dollar items, for the most part. I'm not doing it again, for various reasons, but I hope I was able to help.

ACtually, even just dressing the less fashionably creative in your own camp is good.

Crypto..

I'm more about organic expansion! But I'm sure my world (playa) domination of all things fluffy and material-like would be toooo easy!

On a more serious note, if someone had one of those really old Singer sewing machines that use a foot pedal to move manually, then that would be awesome.. there aren't too many moving parts on those, and as long as we brought enough machine oil in that harsh environment, then we could keep one going...

I see the old pedal sewing machines in just about every antique store, and usually pretty cheap....but needles? My 1950s model machine, took a special needle, that was almost impossible to find.

Now that I think about it...went to a yard sale last spring, and they had about 4 or 5 pedal machines for sale.
anything worth doing is worth overdoing..

Nice!

I know a shop here in Manchester that sells the needles for old Singer machines...

suppose thats the benefit of living in the city where the industrial textiles trade was born!

Plus you can go to the city museum and buy those labels made by 100+ year old ribbon looms.
