By the definition, you're a theme camp too.

Only in that by being in a village, I know my address beforehand. Our camp would be exactly the same if we weren't placed.

Interactivity with the public is the key part.

Doesn't require placement.

JK
OH I think you are VERY wrong with the idea that only theme camps make art, or only theme camps give things to the community.
I'm not a theme camp and I give away a ton of art. The trend to theme camps is doing away with the funky little back street camps, where a handful of people have a cool little idea and provide fun interactions at random intervals. Get the fuck off the Esp and the plazas and explore the back ways... people need to get theme camps out of their heads.
By my definition, you are a theme camp!

Okay on the interactivity. On the inviting others in and providing services and infrastructure, perhaps charging a fee, not so much. No one gets invited in anymore unless they're family of some type.

I volunteered all my free afternoons and weekends last summer to help build a mutant vehicle.
I don't do shit.

Oh wait, I do shit in the blue saunas, does that count?

I also create special red trails in the playa, invisble to the naked eye, but visible to the moop mappers.

Hooo boy. Thems some fightin' words, as they used to say in my hazy imagination.
Jellyfish, Sputnik, Martini Steve have all been involved with placed art in various years. A good chunk of years in Jelly's case. And that's just in my village, although Jellyfish isn't in my village anymore. Or I'm not sure where he is. And art cars, art cars are not necessarily connected to theme camps. And as anti-Cafe as we tend to be on this board, it does provide stuff to do without being a theme camp. (although there may well be a camp for the volenteers.) I don't think it's a bunny theme camp that sets up the BBM (for some reason the bunnies are on my brain today) and I know it's not a theme camp that does CT. Mickey's hug deli. Free Chai Revolution.

I can only hope that jk meant it as some sort of joke.

Frankly, I don't really care if a person is in a theme camp or not. I guess I'm just trying to stir the pot and see what some of those that are always complaining about the right way to burn and cell phones and frat boys, etc., actually do to make the event better.

I have always camped with a theme camp and after seeing and comparing theme camps to non-theme camps, I still am more comfortable with all the benefits our theme camp provides.

I'm not saying they are the way to go for everybody.

As an aside, I live in West Hollywood. We have a Halloween Street party here that used to be phenomenal--almost everyone in costume--and not just costumes, but some of the most elaborate costumes you could ever imaging. Then word got out, and now there are more people coming to the event without costumes than with costumes, just to see all the people in those phenomenal costumes. So, there are now more "spectators" than "participators" and it does have an effect on the event. Just saying.

or "Why a theme camp?" not really selling me on the idea so far.
I have intended to post a third thread, called "You Don't Need a Theme Camp!" to support the camping alone or with immediate friends idea. I felt there was no hurry, although maybe November at the latest, so there's a couple of pages of posts by the time shiney new ones start popping on to the board and we can refer them to it when appropriate. Of course, anyone can start his or her own thread on whatever lines he or she likes.

And I still haven't figured out where to talk about Staggers, Orphans and [channels Cher]Thieves[/channels Cher] camps.
YES i agree that this type of thread should be started. i have always camped without a big theme camp and just with a group of my best friends, like 5-10 people every year. i think this way is a great way to do the playa. you don't have too many people to think about/to deal with. everyone knows eachother so (at least with my friends ) we can say things like "who's dish is this? who's moop is this? where did my cute red tutu go? etc etc" without feeling strange about yelling at a stranger (when i say yelling it's not really 'yelling' - depends on how well you know your friends...) but, my point is, i really think that camping with a smaller group of people is a far better experience and has way less stress - you know who is doing what and who is not. but correct me if i'm wrong, because i've never camped with a big theme camp so i don't know. but anyone i've talked to who has, has said that it was more stressful.

i just think that if you (the starter of the thread) are fed up with the big theme camp type of structure, you should try camping with a few really good friends. not as much to deal with during your burn, not as much stress. it doesn't mean you don't give back to the community as much, just maybe not in the same way (like having some jello shots ready for your neighbors, or A LOT of extra glowsticks for people that didn't bring enough, extra food when you made dinner, etc).

and YES choose 9'oclock!!!!!!!!!
i'm on the playa, bitch!

bigger and better next year, every year...
