I'm just curious about the overlap...

The bigger question is what kind of bank roll you're coming with. Both are great, but Vegas is only Vegas if you are bringin' the wad in your back pocket. Other than that, it's just a bunch of blinking lights that take your money. Pass.

Are there any cruise lines that stop in Vegas? I'd be into that.

Well, geologically Nevada is spreading apart (thus making the basins & ranges of the "Basin & Range" provinces of Nevada & Arizona), so if you wait long enough the water will get there on its own.

hhhmmm........I thought the Great Basin was compressing, ergo, the "compression ranges" that are all the strings of mountains there........

I hesitate to google, but, now wonder if I remember correctly.

Nope- it's stretching. It's actually the area with the thinest crust on the North American plate, and the most likely area for the plate to pull apart.

Here's the USGS overview of the region.

I also highly recommend John McPhee's "Basin & Range" as a great resource on the area, even though it was written when plate tectonics was a new theory.

edit: fixed some singular/ plural action...

Pssst, Eric. I think Plate Techtonics is one theory and takes the singular.

Nope. It's with an "s". It's not a theory, it's a concept. Like physic"s".

I think it's technically a "theory", just like gravity is.

The confusion comes from The Masses thinking that "theory" means just a speculative idea, a "maybe", whereas in science a theory means a scientifically acceptable principle based on a rational and careful evaluation of the facts to explain different phenomena (ie: Theory of Gravity, Theory of Relativity, Theory of Plate Tectonics, Theory of Evolution, Wave Theory of Light..)

Well, in about 10,000 years or so, maybe more, the Dodgers and Giants will be crosstown rivals, again, just like they were when they played in New York. Thanks to the San Andreas fault.

Underneath all the mountains in Nevada sits an earthquake fault so maybe in a few thousand years Las Vegas will have beachfront property.

Never been on a typical cruise, so not sure how to answer that one.

All this geology talk is making me hard as a rock. Nevada is indeed stretching (east-west), which helps create our N-S trending mountain ranges. This is refered to as horst and graben terrain. Which if I remember correctly means headstone and grave in german. The playas occupy the grabens. Here's a diagram to save me a few thousand words (the arrows represent relative motion http://earthquake.usgs.gov/learn/glossary/?term=horst

Maybe someday Vegas will be on the Sea of Cortez. It'll be like Mazatlan but with casinos.

Whatever the hell it is, it's plate tectonics. Not plate tectonic. Did you study physic in high school?

JS-Read my post- the "s" is there. Still a singular subject, however.

re: Vegas and Cruise ships.. ahem.

they gots lots a sammiches.

some blinky lights too. Only been to vegas once. I had to work long days cleaning up a store that was near the annual corporate wing ding. Scraping double stick tape off beams, and painting bollards, mainly. woo hoo vegas. They put us in a nice quiet hotel near the tram line, but not within walking distance of anything. I got to see some nice impressionist paintings at Bellagio I think. It was nice to find a quiet place. Casinos mainly impressed me with their charged air of WANT and noise.

I have a lottery fantasy of a Cunard Suite on a world cruise.
