In a fit of nostalgia, I was looking for a video clip by an old fellow I remember from a local TV station back home who had the stereotypical local accent ... or at least the accent that the "grownups" had when I was a kid. His name was "Scorchy" Tawes and I knew he had retired some time ago but still did bits for the local TV station from time to time and was hoping to find one.
Well, I am sad to report that he passed on a few years ago and it is a damned shame. This man should be an example for aspiring local video journalists everywhere.
So long, Scorchy. It really was a pleasure to listen to your bits on Scorchy's Corner. Here, I will share you with some friends of mine if you don't mind. My mom and her friends talk just like this, by the way.

Thanks, Genius. My favorite (and perhaps the only) appearance of the "mandelbrot" man in pop culture is in an almost throwaway in Last Call that I cannot do justice to. It gave me pleasure--I couldn't fallow the poker stuff, but I could just about follow the math stuff.

Barbara Billingsley, who wore a classy pearl necklace and dispensed pearls of wisdom as America's quintessential mom on "Leave it to Beaver," has died at age 94, a family spokeswoman said Saturday.
The actress passed away at 2 a.m. (5 a.m. ET) Saturday at her home in Santa Monica, California, after a long illness, spokeswoman Judy Twersky said. A private memorial is being planned.

God Bless you Barbara Billingsley. May you forever rest in peace. As a child I watched Leave it to Beaver. It was one of my favorite shows. She was the Ubermom! (plus I had a crush on Tony Dow) She will be remembered by millions.
Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.

That really is a dream job. Cracker Jack hasn't put a real toy in their boxes for many years now. Just stupid little paper things with bad jokes.theCryptofishist wrote:Sitting around selecting toys for Cracker Jack is one of my dream jobs.

And Botan Rice Candy's "Free Amusing Toy" has become "Free Children's Sticker."
The last thing I can remember coming out of cracker jack, is mini baseball cards.

This afternoon, a dear friend passed away.
Micah, a cat who I found abandoned on the side of the road eleven years ago and raised since before his eyes ever were even open, feeding him with a bottle every four hours. So small he fit in the palm of my hand, he was the litter mate of Salem, my long-time black cat avatar model, who passed earlier this year.
My ever hungry little pal, he never missed a chance to grab a bite with you. His health had been in decline for a few years, suffering from hyper-thyroid problems. Though his hunger never waned, his body simply got thinner and thinner over time. Things became worse in the past few weeks when he developed an issue with a blockage in his windpipe. The vet felt that it wasn't due to any foreign object and sedating him to scope his throat might well do him in due to his body being so weak. The toughest part was that I couldn’t hold him or pet him much, else he’d get excited and the problem would become so exacerbated that he would struggle to breath, mouth wide open and body thrashing to try and get some air. After a few minutes it would pass and he would calm down. His body was beginning to shut down and the best we could do was make him comfortable and let it run it’s course.
Yesterday morning his fit was so traumatic that Karine and I were ready to take him to the vet for one last ride. When Karine called them, we were told that we’d have to wait for several hours for the next appointment. This seemed an odd thing to say to someone who just told them her cat was dieing in complete distress, but so it was. As the time drew near to go, he had calmed down again and was restful and we opted to cancel the appointment.
And I am ever so glad we did.
Mr. Micah made it through the night and came into the kitchen to sit on his chair the next morning. He had lately been reduced to eating mostly gravy-like food since the blockage was so severe, but sometimes could manage a small piece of something solid. When lunch time came around, he begged for a bite of ham and I shared a tiny piece with him. Shortly afterwards, his breathing problem arose again and he made it to the screen door, where he laid in a sunbeam. I kept an eye on him for the next few minutes and he became more and more calm. I petted his head and walked back into the house for a moment. While there, I felt him leave. It was as if he’d rubbed my leg on his way out. Returning to the porch, I found his body, still and at rest. He died at home with the things he knew and enjoyed around him.
We wrapped him in a t-shirt that he’d been sleeping on the previous night and laid him to rest beside his sister earlier this afternoon.
I will miss my buddy an awful lot.

((((LCN)))) ((((Micah)))
Out of nowhere today I remembered an old friend of mine, a black cat named Bubba. Coincidentally, I just typed up a story about him to a mutual friend and then I saw your note.
This past winter I was awoken one morning by the feeling of a cat jumping on the foot of the bed and rubbing my feet as passing. But I didn't own a cat at the time....I later found out that it was at that moment that a friend had died, a friend who was friends with the long-passed Bubba.
I like the image of him in that ray of sunlight next to the screen door, passing so peacefully, scent of ham on his lips. It's so much better than the alternative at the vet.

LCN, a big hug and tears from afar, and I'm a dog person. I'm saddened at your loss, but glad that Micah was home with his family that loved him.
Excuse me Ma'am, your going to feel a small prick.

LCN, I'm so sorry to hear about your companion. At least he passed at home with the people who loved him.
