Musical Instrument care

Me and a couple of friends were planning on bringing intruments to our first burn. It's still unclear as to what we will be bringing depending on what we learn in the coming months about the burn. Initially it was just me and one friend, and we wanted to bring his drum set and my electric guitar as well as acoustic and play garage rock, punk music and folky music (covers and originals) with that simple set-up.

Question is how bad is the environment on wooden instruments and what are the circumstances around playing amplified rock music on the playa? I know of a rule in the SA that stipulated a cieling of 90 decibels 20 feet away from the sound source. I also wanted to know if there are music camps that one could just contact and ask for permission to play in their area?

And lastly, are there any rules on how much space you may take up on the playa or on setting up a theme camp? Through searching the forums I've found that electronic music apparently dominates the event. As much as I also love electronic music, if there is a lack of music with pop/rock instruments I would be interested in how to go about setting up an area devoted to accomodating those acts.

Open camping is that, open. Don't be space greedy and be mindful of your neighbors. You'll be given a map when you get there, theme camps or other reserved areas are marked. You go to a spot and see if it has been grabbed or not.

There's a discussion or two going about musical instruments already. We had a banjo player in Hushville, very nice.

Thanks I found two of these discussions some pages back. Seems the only advice is to bring a humidifier if you're worried. I'll just bring a mid-range acoustic this year and some congas. I spend so much of my money on musical equipment I'm not too worried if they get hurt, I'll just see if they can be repaired or buy new ones.

I think previous threads have said that keeping a damp sponge in your case helps.

I'm one of those musically untrained who would love live music out there; even if I don't like the music itself, the idea of having people show up and give that to the city tickles me. The whole electronica thing annoys me. On the plus side, there's a possible heavy metal camp growing. I'd go there for half an hour on Finntroll night.

Yeah, me, too. I've got videos of people playing violins, mandolins, acoustic guitars, trumpets, accordions, steel pans, and such. They really knock me out. I'd love it if MarkeeMoon stopped by and played for Louise and me at the next burn.

I'm sure the dryness could be a problem, especially if you are from a more humid climate. We bring various drums and they suffer no ill effects, but we live in the high desert.

It's the dust. It gets in everything. The drums are carefully sealed up when not in use, and that helps. And they can be fairly easily cleaned when back in defaultia. You have the right idea, though, don't bring anything that is real valuable or special. I would think it difficult to clean the inside of a guitar. Would sort of become a patina, a proof of use kind of thing.

But music on the playa... It's a rare thing, but it does exist. All I can say is...
