Something Different

Post by Miki » Wed Oct 20, 2010 10:51 am

I was browsing the net and somehow came to this forum...I have NEVER seen anything like this. It immediately piqued my interests, and so here I am, a fish out of water, a complete noob (Be nice, please?).

I'll start reading up and learning more about this after I take an exam and sleep (I've been up for a day or two studying). I have a question though. I was wondering the age ranges here, because I feel a bit young and to be competely honest, older people somewhat frighten me (Because of their excessive amount of knowledge and the fact that I know nothing about it, haha).

I may not be able to attend 2011's event simply out of the fact that I am a poor college student, but I shall definitely start saving and begin learning about the Burning Man, to see if it's the right thing for me (Though I really believe this is just something else :) ).

So hello, please call me Miki.

Hi Miki! ePlaya is probably not an exact duplication of the playa as far as demographics go. I suspect we tend to be on the older side as you seem to have found. Anyway, enjoy the wisdom you find here and ignore the snark (or join in).
It's going to be alright.

Age is from tot to mega elder. I'd say the mediun is somewhere in the late thirties/early forties range. BUt there are collage aged people too.
You can always pull the old, "if I say nothing but listen well and nod when I need to, I'll figure it out by hearing everything." AKA Lurking.
I'm sort of a dive off the board into the scarey group of people type, but we all have different approaches and different willingness to expose ourselves as fools.
The event starts the week before labor day, with the big push to get on the roads and back home on labor day itself. That makes it difficult for a lot of people in the education system to attend--just an fyi. You have eleven months to plan and decide what you want, so no stress yet. Get some sleep and see how you feel when you're a bit less spun. We'll still be here...

Thank you for the tip, theCryptofishist. If I were to attend next year's event, I would still be legally underage (dammit, lol). But that'll give me enough time to, as you say, "lurk" (Though I myself am bold and would rather jump into the fiery pits of expressing myself and my independence).

I am from Texas. :)

Underage? 17? Because you're okay at 18. (Although, don't expect to be served alcohol if you're under 21.)

Hola Miki. My daughter and I attended last year for the first time. She was just 2 months shy of her 21st birthday. So we didn't go into any theme bars/camps looking for drinks. We brought plenty of our own and partied in our camp. We also brought a flask and a thermos for taking our drink out on the playa with us. She is also a college student and missed the first week of school. One prof dropped her from her class and would not let her come back. We were kind of shocked since we live in N. Nevada and most profs are cool with bm. Was it worth it? Hell yeah!
So save up and if you can make it in 2011 we'll hope to see you there.

I will turn 20 when 2011 comes around. And yeah, I was referring to underage drinking :P

I have class soon, but I was reading about the event and the FAQs and wow my heart started racing. I am already excited!

Yeah, school may be an issue for me, but I guess we'll see how it goes.

Just want to say that I barely drink on playa and I'm with a bar camp!
There is so much to do and the environment is a big stressor, that altering isn't really necessary and may be risky. And maybe it's a good idea to do it sober once before you get into all the intricacies of otherwise.
YMMV.

I actually wasn't planning on drinking at all (I don't drink often, anyway), just referring to it to tell you my age range :P

I would definitely have more fun sober, anyway

Okay, should you chose to go in 2011, you are old enough to get in the gate. That's all I was trying to acertain.
