Ohh, it's definitely not "safe" out there, but you'll have a hell of a time. :)

As long as you're set with all your food/water/camping equipment and keep your wits about you, you'll do fine.

I've just slogged through this thread... what a slog! Lotta preconceptions, lotta assumptions, lotta expectations.

None of it matters, hon. The only thing I can guarantee you is this: If she has never gone, when she comes back she will not be the same woman that left.

What that means to you? Who knows. Not a mind reader. It doesn't really matter, because as you will learn, what is, is.

Personal story? My first burn was 2005. My other half has never been. I do my gig, she hers. She may go someday - I hope so - but if not, then I'm cool with that too.

You mentioned she's going with her best male friend... yeah. I caught that. So does that mean you're afraid she'll get laid? Maybe dump you for him? Join a coven from New South Wales? Move in with a strange guy she met on the playa? Maybe she'll hate it and come home. Maybe she'll move to Nevada. Maybe this is all drivel...

Know what? Whatever she does, or doesn't, she will, or won't. But that's on her, not you. If you're meant to be together,t hen together you will stay, and if no, then you'll sojourn on your separate way. Eh?

Main point of this ramble is this - even if you 2 are a "couple", you're still individuals. She's gonna do things you don't, and you're gonna do things she don't. Gotta get used to it, because as much as we think we are the entire focus of our honey's life, they have a life outside of your head.

Have a nice day...
shoo shoo skee boo boo foo foo you too!

I'm contemplating going by myself.
I went by myself in 2008, my first year. Had a blast! Do it! In a lot of ways it makes the whole experience sooo much easier...easier logistics, no camp drama/arguments...good shit. Just bring lots of extra food and beer and you'll have new best friends in no time.

Dangerous, yes. Very dangerous, no. As far as violent crime goes, BRC is safer than any other american city of similier size. (Okay, I don't have a cite. But certainly safer than most american cities blah, blah, blah.) Having worked in ESD (Emergency Services Department) I know something about the ugly underbelly of the event. Specifically speaking of sexual assualt, it happens. I work with a group that tries to prevent that by education in a sex positive fashion. However, I also believe that turning to the neighbors in almost any situation is going to get you a positive, helpful result.
You'll have time to make friends on this board, or through the regional burner network if you're starting now.

OK, more on topic, all the folks here talking about the inexplicable concept of not having sex at the Burn because of their smelly, playafied taint (or fears of smelly taint, UTI, etc) might understand the motivation for bringing an RV.

One vintage RV with ground-up restoration: ~$45,000
R/T gas from SoCal: ~$900
Daily showers and epic sex under air conditioning at BM: PRICELESS
We accomplish all of the above with our Yurt at a fraction of the cost.

FWW, I went last year (my first) with an orphan group and it was great. If I can wing it this year (read by hook or crook) I think I may do it solo, I think I'd get a lot more out of it not having the temptation/luxury of just hanging at camp enjoying great people and would be more inclined to explore a bit more. No regrets mind you, just the opportunity for a different experience. Plus now a lot of the questions I had were answered and I know a bit more of what to expect .

Whatever you do, don't forget your favorite pillow.

In fact, were I you, I'd go pack it now.

That towel's too dirty for me to believe that it belongs to a galactic hitch-hiker.

I'll just say that if you don't trust her, then don't be with her. If you don't trust anybody, then you shouldn't be dating, until you get your head straight. That said, Burning Man isn't my cup of tea, either. Nor is it my wifes, my brothers, or his wifes. Me, 7 burns in a row. Brother and sisterinlaw, 6. Wife. 3. So, good chance that your idea of Burning Man is flat wrong, so, whether this girl works out or not, you should go anyway.
The handbasket to hell is leaving. Hop in world!

Hmm, with the couple thing, I think maybe down the road if I get a boyfriend by then, I'll invite him to come with me, just to feel safer to have someone I know come along, but yes, after reading the replies here, if I am prepared and am ready-minded, I'll do fine if I end up going at it alone. It feels like a pilgrimage. Thanks for the tips and personal experiences :)

To consider the playa as "Home"...I hope someday I can call it that, too. :D

That's not "dirt", it's playa dust.

Galactic aliens need to have fun, too.

Since this is getting me out of a tight spot with something stupid I said, no one will believe me. I meant it was too clean. You have to admit that that has seen the inside of a washing machine this week, and hasn't been unfolded.
