Oh crap. Probably true, because I'm sure I saw that by the time I was twelve. I thought it was a consequence of growing up as the daughter of a cosmologist. And I read a fair amount of science fiction. The more immediate trigger is Stephenson's Anathem, which I should finish today or tomorrow. There's a patch that's a little dull, but as a whole the book is excellent.

Psshhhhh of course it is. Everyone knows that it doesn't snow or rain in NW Nevada, and if it does.. the playa is like concrete and impermeable to moisture. Won't soak up a drop.
