Hey all, my name is Alex and I am a )'( Virgin no more! 2010 was my first burn, which is a bit embarrassing considering I grew up in Reno and should have started attending years ago. BM was easily the most amazing event I've ever attended. I was there from Thursday through Monday and am already planning to spend the whole week for 2011 (yes I've caught that overzealous 2nd year bug  ).

When my veteran campmates told me about the post-playa depression and dreams, I took it at face value. It's been 2 months since the burn (yes that means we're down to t-minus 10 months!!! Better than a year, right?) and I'm still having the occasional playa dream and bummed day missing BRC and its inhabitants.

Bottom line, I miss it and August can't come soon enough!

Hola Alex and nice to meet ya. Don't be embarrassed last year was my first year to and I also grew up in Reno and I'm alot older than you...We went from Monday to Sunday. There is a different vibe in the early part of the week and you should try to make it out there as early as you can. Seeya on the playa

Thanks for the welcome, Lucky! Yeah that's what I've heard. To be honest, I'd love to get out there even earlier and help build some of the infrastructure or help some of the artists with the manual labor aspect of their art. All in due time right?

Hey there, welcome to eplaya!

JK

Volunteer! That can get you there early to help.

Thanks, JK! I've been looking into volunteering. Would you suggest the DPW if I'd prefer to get my hands dirty and swing a few hammers? If not, which group would you suggest?

DPW is a great group to volunteer with! Being in Reno, you're only a couple hours from the ranch. It is a lot of work, but also a lot of fun.

Volunteering at BM is way cool since the event would not be what it is without volunteers.

That said, maybe for your first year take it easy...get a lay of the land with no commitments ahead of time. Once you're there and reasonably oriented and still wanting to volunteer, go to Center Camp and see about signing on with at the Cafe for a shift or two. Then the following year sign on with Greeters or DPW or Lamplighters or whoever.... DPW is an incredible group, and be prepared to work...HARD!

The people who get to go to the playa early are the people who have shown they are trustworthy, and will do the work.
I don't know about the DPW. You could certainly go on work weekends--there may be another one this year, it would be a clean-up.
If you want to go with an artist, I'd suggest getting involved with a local project early, so that the artist(s) know that you show up to work and make things right. In other words, DPW or artist, be valuable.

Oh, I'm well aware that not just anyone can get involved with the backstage aspect of BM. I'm also not expecting to get fully involved in the next year, but I'm definitely hooked. I plan to be a lifer and would eventually like to become heavily involved and put my degree to use, which is more than I can say for my current job

Thanks for all the input and suggestions of how to get involved!

Thank you for understanding. Some people can be touchy about it.
