Idea - Sword In The Stone

Postby Parasitoid » Mon Oct 25, 2010 8:41 am

I wanted to share this idea so I can get it out of my head.

It could be very simple: A "rock" with a sword stuck in it.

Or it could be complex: A "rock" with a remote controlled electro-magnet in it that is holding a metal sword down. Release sword when the person of your choosing pulls on it.

I like the Camelot stories.

whatever.

We did that last year at the Interaction Cafe. My campmate had the sword and stone (plastic). We left it in the middle of the street at 1 in the morning with some lights shining on it and waited for people to try it. When a person pulled it out, we raced into the street and prclaimed him King (or Queen), put a crown upon their head, and let them lord over us . The reaction was excellent and is well worth doing. Go for it.

Wouldn't the repeated in and out scratch the finish on your sword though?

ya. I think it could be a fairly dull and inexpensive sword. might even be smart to have a backup in case the first gets liberated.

And consider. Do you really want someone who might not be "quite right" with a metal sword, however dull, in his or her hands? I don't think the emphasis has to be on real here. Certainly no one who used our plastic props was disappointed.

Skip the stone, make the sword out of rebar, and drive it four feet into the playa.

See if you can price out the sword in that pic. You'd be surprised.

Go to a pawn shop or an antiques store. You are sure to find a whole bunch of home shopping network swords for cheap. I think every 18 year old boy bought one at some point (including myself. If you need a Kris, big sword with wavy blade I will give it to you).

Umm, as much as I believe in Safety Fucked (we demoted it from third last year after a hammer fell off the ladder and nearly hit my head for the umm 14th time. But I save my beer) I wonder if a real sword is a good idea. I'm 50/50 on that. If you have someone watching it at all times then I say go for a real sword. Otherwise a plastic sword would work fine.

The magnet idea is super cool. I think it would be so funny watching all the beefy guys fail before their frail sparkle pony girlfriend.

Even funnier as it glides out so effortlessly when she is heckled into making a half-hearted attempt.

LOL. I have something like 15 swords or more on my walls in the basement. Two upstairs in the umbrella stand. My sailor nephew's swords for now. Some of them are unsharpened, good only as bludgeons. The rest will fucking cut you. No, not HSN. eBay, except the Highlanders, which I foolishly collected for a few years. I do rather like them.

I suppose this happenned later on...

King Arthur: I am your king.
Peasant Woman: Well, I didn't vote for you.
King Arthur: You don't vote for kings.
Peasant Woman: Well, how'd you become king, then?
[Angelic music plays... ]
King Arthur: The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. That is why I am your king.
Dennis the Peasant: Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
Arthur: Be quiet!
Dennis the Peasant: You can't expect to wield supreme power just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!

....if you bring a "real" sword, you may want to consider getting one that is not sharpened...a plastic one would avoid any possible "entanglements" with the Law.

How would one of them react when you mentioned that he'd now have to have sex with his own sister, and then go into battle against the product of that incestuous union? I'm thinking there's a musical to be found in that.

Can we move the discussion back to guns? The 45 in the stone sounds so much more contemporary.

As long as we can agree that sister diddling is as timely a subject as it has ever been. Jerry Springer wouldn't lie to us about that. Oh! Is that Guinevere to the right?
