Try saving every $5.00 Bill you get for Burning Man. Then you might be able to afford the trip. (That's what my mother-in-law does and she's been able to take some great trips--unfortunately none yet tot Burning Man.)

When I fuel up my Ranger I put the same amount of money as the cost of fuel in my savings account. It makes for expensive fuel ups but is a way for me to save for that new vehicle I will need some point in the near future.
Burning Man I just empty the checking account for and then pay hell until at least the end of the year. I should have enough dough for the ticket when January 19th comes around.

yeah, you definitely want to save way more than you think you're gonna spend. I always spend FAR more than I intended on getting to the playa (plus all of the fun things you'll want while you're there). And it's always worth every penny!
i'm on the playa, bitch!

For those of you that work "regular" jobs that do Direct Deposit...did you know that you can actually direct some of that money somewhere else?drucake wrote:have any of you ever saved change for a whole year to pay your way to bm? so far i think i have about $80. what are some of your ways of cutting back, saving....
Go do a local credit union and join. Most only require $1 to open a savings account. If they give you an ATM card for the account, cut it up and throw it away if you don't have good discipline.
Then, go to your payroll department and have them deposit something like $25 our of each check into that savings account, then the rest normally. After a couple paychecks you'll never even notice it.
When tickets go on sale, go withdraw cash for ticket. Keep saving. Six weeks before the event go into CU and tell them you need a replacement ATM card. Should arrive in 5 days and you can purchase most if not all your supplies on your little stash.

I use saved change to supplement the food budget on vacations. I try to never use change when I am buying anything and build up a pretty good stash of coins. Most banks don't have coin counters anymore though. Supermarkets have the coinstar machines (which, I admit I have used on occasion just to save time) but they are expensive as they take a big cut of your savings.

Been saving all coins in a jar, never using them for over 10 years now
Ends up being between $500-$800 at the end of the year.
It used to pay for the gas that got us back and forth between Seattle and Burning Man, but now that we live in Reno, we just spend it on hookers and blow.

I've been doing that for a few years now. My wife argued with me about doing that until she heard Susie Orman suggest it.Risky wrote:If my total at the store comes to $3.37, I use the next largest bill $5.
We start to pool all our loose change when we get home from vacation and save it for the following year. Adds up to an extra $100+. Biggest problem is how to cash it infor cash. Casinos here in Nevada are starting to charge for it, the banks want it rolled, the coin machines at supermarkets charge 9%.

If you're in the Reno area, United Credit Union, formerly Clearstar, formally Sierra Schools CU has a change dump in their lobby on Damonte Ranch. No charge and I don't even think you need to be a member. We've used it several times

We have a set of plastic tubes - one each for dimes, pennies, nickels and quarters. All our change goes into them. Once a tube is full we dump it into pre-formed coin wraps. Once the rolls add up to over $50 we take them into the bank. Been doing this for years. We also have a large jar for "found" money. Yes - we do bend over to pick up pennies. They do add up.
You know it's going to be a bad day when you jump out of bed and miss the floor.
I wasn't gonna log in but seems I should share a few things that might help
lostinreno good tip United Credit Union=free better than paying 9% to those coin star or other machines and casinos charging for change, huh? whoa, new to me.
I worked at The Atlantis for a few years, I swear they NEVER charge for bringing in coins, including pennies...I tip them a buck usually. Just did it while buying gear for 2010. maybe call them 1st and ask...
US Bank gave me a free checking and you can run zero balance (I opened it with $100) so for auto deposit and cutting up the ATM card, they could be a good choice for checking
If you still have good credit I just got a FREE round trip plane ticket from South West Airlines, to anywhere they fly! I called 877-922-3788 saw the ad on TV. I called, mentioned the offer; southwest.com/tv66 the card just arrived (funny but I can't afford to go anywhere! maybe fly to Mauii and hitch hike to the nearby beach by the airport, camp with food I'd fly in with and come back two nights later...or go see fam in so calif) You also get 2 bags free no bag charge. I have to charge ONE thing for the plane ticket to happen/be available...can be one buck they said! I'll buy gasoline. Probably some taxes for flight but, just sayin' was easy!
@Motz you're awesome! I could NOT have handled gettin' around without your gifted golf cart....still miss her, GC n we...I'm still mindblown! (among 1000+ things I was able to do, the theater and trash fence crash day was...schweet! Your gift helped soooooo many people Motz, far too many to count, ~)'(~

Comming from Carson City, which way would I turn on Damonte Ranch? From the freeway. NP Moonrise. Glad Golficus Carticus could continue her life of playa service again this year and with great success I might add. That Jim Beam you gave me is nearly gone. Its been a real nice treat every week or two. Thanks man.
Golf cart prices are coming down a little up here. Saw a freaking fantastic Harley Davidson AMF 4 wheel Gasser for 500 on CL today. Beautiful Gasser. Maybe the best looking one of that vintage I've seen on CL. I'm in the poor house in a pretty major way or I would have added it to the fleet to resell at the same price to someone who needed it.... The loss of Craiglook hasn't helped in my looking for stuff. Craigslist is so clunky.
I like US bank for my regular banking needs, Vanguard for my personal and retirement investing and The Investors Manifesto by W. J. Bernstein for a rational investing scheme that makes sense.
I should be saving a dollar a day for a new computer. One thing at a time.

CarigLOOK.com is gone?
Crazedlook.com never worked for me, huh?
Maybe a thread asking about this and such?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I will email you, I don't like the sound of the doughsky issues you're mentioning.
Also, I have yet to post on the gift thread, I'll get there... I have a question or two first.
Many thanks!
I know where Double R is. Someway, somehow I'll stop by the place.
Thats not to far from that Walmart shooting today. Other side of the freeway.
There is a fairly new Greater Nevada Credit Union here in Dayton. Just a thought on my part.
