Still on the playa...where did everyone go?

Dont do this in April though or your footrpints and tire tracks are there the rest of the year!

It's a "high" desert though.. which means that it gets damn cold and those surrounding mountains get moisture and snow all over them in the winter time. The playa itself is a dry lake bed, so the loamy material is pretty much leftover lake sediment from millenniums of water. As such, as soon as water hits it.. it goes right back to being muck as you can see. It hardens and compacts nicely, but all it takes is a little water and it gets mucky. This year it rained for maybe 20-30 minutes if that on Monday (I was asleep..), and it turned into ankle deep muck just from that little bit of precipitation.

Yeah, I wonder about that, too. After all the natural habitat (or maybe it's feeding grounds) of Flamingos is seasonal, alkalai lakes.

Anyway, these are the brine shrimp, otherwise known as sea monkeys. They are building those little castles as we speak.

The water on the playa is, of course, temporary and birds are often migratory. All transitory, like the Man.
