I don't know what Clarkcon uses for brewing, but glass on playa is strongly discouraged. It breaks and then leave no trace means someone has to get on his/her knees to clean it up. All too often it's not the person who brought or broke the glass.
Which is too bad, french press is the best. I guess I can add another rare checkmark to the "things the french do right" column.

I can't tell you how excited i am that there is a coffee camp. i adore coffee. i bought a french press a year ago, but i must be doing something wrong, it never turns out as good as everyone i've heard rave about them. i'm obviously doing something wrong, but no one i know around here has one to compare notes with.
we have the french press, an expresso machine, an oven top percolator, and electric percalator, a mr. coffee maker (my least favorite) and a keurig. you can't beat the keurig for convenience but expresso machine is the best flavor. like i said, i adore coffee

You're using coarsely ground, I hope? And then I think it's pressing the plunger at exactly the right time.
But it's not going to be everyone's favorite. My mother throws the grounds into the water and filters as she pours into her cup. Not quite "cowboy" but a different take on hot water and arabica.

my grammy boiled her coffee on the stovetop too. first coffee i ever had. about an inch of coffee, sugar till it hurt and then milk to the top of the mug. perfection. first time i had it made through a filter i thought those people were genious, but missing out on all the fun.

LOL. I actually lived in a place where there was no ground coffee, or whole bean coffee available. We lived there B.C. meaning before the ferry from the main island had refrigeration, so "before cheese." Any friends island hopping would bring back cheese as a treat. Friends and relatives flying in were asked to please bring "really, truly, coffee" and it was doled out for special occasions or shared with other friends dying for a true cup of brewed coffee. We didn't waste it on the visitors who would be getting it on the airplane and at home in a few more days or weeks. They just wouldn't appreciate it. Nescafe was the best we could get, and there was something called Pablo, which we suspect was what Nescafe swept off the floor at the end of the week. It was a good family shared inside look when offered Pablo by a new neighbor who hadn't tried it yet. "It's so much less expensive, and the jar is so much larger!" Any real coffee, made any way is good for me. strong is preferred, but no more nescafe if I can help it.

Get yourself an Aeropress too. Not quite espresso, but makes a nice cup with convenience and easy cleanup. Good for camping too, especially if you can grind on site.

Coffee...and I have not had a good relationship over the years. My first experience with coffee was back when I was a pre-teenager...and my grandmother made Maxwell House in an old fashioned percolator. I tried it, spit it out and wondered for years why people were so obsessed with it. I heard horror stories of stuff barely passable as coffee being sold at c-stores and truck stops that made me stay away even longer. It took over 20 years before I was brave enough to try another cup of coffee. And even now...I'm still not one to see what all the hype is over coffee...even when Starbucks makes me a frou-frou drink loaded with chocolate and cinnamon and all the stuff that makes it passably drinkable...I'm just haven't found a coffee experience that has made me want to have more.

Tea has been my caffeine thing and even that got shortcutted and the experience...is well...not so good. Take a Mr. Coffee coffee maker, put in 2 bags of Celestial Seasonings Raspberry tea, 10 bags of some other tea...usually the $1.32 for 100 bag cheap stuff from a certain mass discounter, run two pots of water through the mess, dump in 3/4 cup of C&H sugar into a gallon pitcher and you call it...well it's tea...but not really.

In short...I need a real coffee and tea education. And not one provided by Starbucks. Does good coffee need to cost me $4 a cup? Yeah, I can Google it...but I want to hear from people who feel passionately about their tea and coffee. What to try? Are the single cup coffee makers with the pre-made packets worth the time and money?

Forgive me for hijacking the thread...but I felt it was time to ask. And while I'm at it...if I find something I like how can I make it on the playa or on camp trips? Or something fast in the morning too? Hell this is so bad I honest to God don't even know what a French Press is or even that Aeropress for that matter....and I'm off to Google that now. In short...HELP! PM's are welcome so I don't clutter up this thread thanks to my stupidity on the subject!

Some of the most economical and best tasting hot beverages are made at home. Making them at home means you can spend the money on tools and better quality ingredients, rather than pay for the service of making your drink. Also buying teas/coffees in less "packaged" forms costs less in the long run, and tastes better too because it is fresher.

I'd first watch some of Alton Brown's "Good Eats" videos on the topic. He covers good practices and information about both coffee and tea--in an informative and entertaining manner (video for coffee, video for tea).

Some personal favorites for tea: If you like, or think you'd like, English-style tea I like Taylors of Harrogate loose tea (Yorkshire gold is pretty decent), or Lipton Yellow Label. You can order the former online, but the latter you'll find for a better deal if you visit an Indian store and buy it there (try the Lipton Yellow Label first since it is less expensive and decent). For more oriental style teas, I'd try an oolong tea specifically the tikuayin variety of oolong. You can buy it at Oriental stores.

You'll also be surprised just how much you save (or rather, how much more you get) by going with loose tea over teabags. So try getting loose whenever you can. On a side note, if you want convenience with decent quality, Taylors tea bags are nice and big and produce a good cup; they just cost more. I like using evaporated milk instead of cream for tea, but the only brand that tastes good to me is Nestle/Carnation (also decent in coffee). The worst is Meadow Gold. BLEH.

Coffee: I rarely make coffee by the pot like Alton Brown shows because I can't drink that much, and don't want to either. What I use is an Aeropress (find them on Amazon or coffee shops). I press two "shots" worth of coffee (two Aeropress scoops of beans) and then fill the rest with water for a full cup (an "Americano" of sorts). It makes some delicious coffee, is very portable, and extremely easy to clean up. I also like that I can make a cup of coffee in about 2 minute if I have the water ready.

I did invest in a grinder later on, but you can buy pre-ground coffee beans if you're able to drink through it quickly enough. The grinder cost me $375, but when you consider the cost of the absolute cheapest cup of coffee at a shop--which is usually a refill--is at a dollar a cup, it pays for itself in my mind. I just force myself to never buy pre-made coffee.

The coffee I make at home never gives me jitters, or an upset stomach, and tastes better than what I get at coffee shops. Always make sure to maintain the correct ratio of grounds/water however.

I think Burning Man coffee in the morning is just so magnificent... it has to do with being free of obligation, and being around numerous other people in the same wonderful boat. Fresh air, new day, all that. If I had the nicest rv in the world, I would still sit outside and drink my morning coffee.

I didn't always drink coffee,
but I seem to crave caffeine on the playa,
including MtnDew, and I am not a soda drinker.

Well, no one else has spoken up for my favorite brew method, so I'll chime in. Get a simple melita drip cone. They cost all of about $4. Yes, you will have to dispose of the filter also, but it's only about as big as the slug of grounds. Simply boil some water and pour it over the ground in the cone and drip it into your cup. I've tried all sorts of brewing methods and still like a simple "cup of drip" over any other. Espresso is just a quickie. I like a long, languid interlude with my java in the morning.
