Any experience with ScrewPegs, Clip grommets?
Any experience with ScrewPegs, Clip grommets?
Looking to replace my playa tent stakes (My military stakes have been a female dog to get out of the playa.
Saw "ScrewPegs" online at http://www.screwpegs.com/acatalog/screw-pegs-b.html and they seem attractive since I have a drill anyhow. Any experience? Otherwise, just going with ol' rebar.
Also I may have some access to used, frayed shade cloth when I get to playa. Any opinions on clip grommets vs. tarp clamps in playa winds?

It's prudent to assume the top six inches of playa soil is crap.

The only way we got those clips to hold was with duct tape over, around and underneath. If you insist upon using used material, fold it double and use grommets every 18" IMHO. Those clamps also need duct tape help to stay.
But we were using tarps and not shade material so YMMV.

I tried something similar to these, and they wouldn't hold fabric under normal tension. I never got them on the playa, as a result.

used frayed shade cloth is just that.......rotten, moopy...don't bother
We have used shade cloth going on about 6 years. Cut a 2" wide strip of poly tarp and a 8" wide strip. Hem / fold the shade cloth once around the 2" strip. Fold both edges of the 8" strip to the center making 4" wide. (cross section looks like a used staple) Fold this down the center making double thick 2" wide "V" shape. Put the shaded cloth wrapped 2" strip in the "V". Zig zag stitch the crap out of it.
Build up is:
2 layers poly tarp, shade cloth, poly tarp, shade cloth,2 layers poly tarp.
put in 3/8 or 1/2 inch grommets about 18" apart.
This has held up to multiple whiteout dust storms with 40 -50 mph winds and 6 years on playa. No rips, tears or pulled out grommets

I've heard that the best way to get stakes out of the playa is with your car/truck/bus/whatever-motorized-vehicle-you-used-to-get-there. (After all, a few hundred horses is a LOT more than any human can manage!)
