Overwhelming Police Presence 2010

I'll admit to being very much anti-police and against their behavior at b-man, and many other places. I do believe that most cops either start out or end up hating the people they are supposed to protect, for many reasons. I've been hit up and had under-covers try to engage me on several occasions, which I think of as being ridiculous. . In 7 burns, I've never once been cited, nor have any of my camp mates or friends. Anecdotal evidence suggests that reasonable care and precaution will you keep you out of trouble. Smoking dope openly will get you in trouble, as will passing drugs around amongst groups, accepting illegal substances, or offering them to, strangers, etc. All normal, common sense things. If you get cited every time you're crossing the playa, then you, or your group, are really being blatant about what ever you're doing.

not coming to the defense of jizzz, dont know and dont want to. but unfortunately jkisha's posts on the topic has always been inflammatory despite many people trying to address it more than once.

this is usually what happens when someone is intent to push others buttons, consistently. there isnt any "backing up" or civil discussion to it.

I simply stated what I was taught. There truly are bad neighborhoods in Reno that truly do need help, cops should go clean those places up and help them!

Just be polite when the cops are serving and protecting, also there are much better threads about this but I stand by my earlier comment. Hoping this thread becomes productive or gets killed and let the more educated threads come up when needed. Embarrassed you're allowed to drink wine btw!

then you must have camped hidden away on the safe-side of the playa where LEOs help you make coffee and lead little old ladies across the street.

since 2005, i haven't had a year where a campmate or a person (or persons) in a peripheral camp were not hauled off the playa in the middle of the night for minor infractions. most of which did not return.

i'm one person, and in MY experience in any given crossing of the playa, i expect (and routinely experience) one or two citations along the way to whatever destination. LEO enforcement is rampant out there.

the "factual" information you refer to comes from official reports. if you think those reports in any way reflect the reality of what goes down on the playa each year - you're a dummy; a stupid dummy.

I would have to say that all of your experience is anecdotal. LE interactions are down across the event and no I dont have any docs to support that - not until the afterburn for 2010 is out.
Nothing i have read yet is ban worthy - its nice to stay on topic a little in a thread, but drift is inevitable.

I believe there are some links somewhere here on eplaya to reports that appeared in various newspapers that would confirm what you are saying. In the old days, reporters would have to verify their facts, I'm assuming in this case they did just that.

2010 was my first year. The guy at the gate scared me regarding the cops even though they wouldn't have found anything if they had searched because I didn't have anything. But still, the warnings scared the hell out of me. I even thought "What the hell have I gotten myself into?" But then the whole week, I hardly saw a LEO. I didn't use, didn't even drink (I wanted to remember everything!) so I definitely wasn't drawing attention. The closest I came to them was when I walked out into the perimeter area one night. I had looked up and seen a shooting star, so I thought it would be cool to walk out into the quiet and look back. It was very cool, but it was so much farther than I thought. I walked from about 7 to about 11 along the perimeter. I didn't think about them zooming around on 4 wheelers but they did, and they didn't stop me even out there. It was kinda weird to see them though. They seemed out of place.
Anyway, I guess it's different for everyone. I had a great time regardless of their presence.

So, at most events I've gone to, when police show up and want to enter, they have to buy a ticket at the gate like anyone else. They aren't kept out, but they aren't allowed into the party for free just cause they have their gestapo costume on. Is this so at Burning Man?

LOL I don't think so. I think they are a requirement of the permit for the event and I think BMORG actually pays them to be there.

I certainly could be wrong on this, but it just seems to be the gist of my perceptions from what I've read in the past.

remember BM is on public federal land, not private land. This makes a HUGE difference in the way police can come in. Even large events on private land, in many cases, are required as part of their permit to allow police (and by allow I mean pay) to patrol the event.

There is no way there can be a large gathering of people without official government babysitters and siphoning of money, welcome to 2010.

The arrest rate, per capita, is laughably low...
