Limited resources...should camp be announced in BM Guide?

Post by Weinstain » Sun Nov 07, 2010 12:38 am

I would like a placed theme camp, but i am not sure if it should be advertised. I want the placement on a more outer ring, but i plan to feed people spagetti and have a waterproof floored tent for water gunning (I cant afford a misting tent) and have a general overall decorative theme camp that ties in.

Is it recommended, since I DO NOT have the resources to feed 1000 people (ala Pancake Playhouse), I do not advertise my camp?

I was inspired by the "Burnhardts" unadvertised camp at 6:15 and H which offered a daily afternoon block party that included mist tent and substantial food and libations. They did not advertise either.

Since its my 2nd burn and I may not have alot of help, DONT advertise? or DO?

Don't advertise. You can be listed on themecamps but not in the Where What When guide and pull it off.

Theme camps are never "placed" on the outer rings. Check out a BRC map to see if any areas where theme camps have been placed are amenable to you. If they are .. Do the application and get placement. If not then arrive at the very beginning of the event and find a spot. Another way to get in early and get a spot you like is to volunteer for the ORG or another Theme Camp or Art Instillation. Doing that though you do not have much time to set up your camp. It is a bit of a head start though.

Yup, that's what we do. When we open to serve our floats, we just have some people go out on the street and start inviting people in. (That's the part I like doing the best. :) )

I agree with the "don't" crowd, and you can also limit when you serve. One of my favorite places to hit is the White Dragon Noodle Bar and they start serving at "sundown" and stop about an hour later. No clock needed, and easy to remember.

Don't forget to get your food vendor permit!

Okay, I'm going to say that you should get the permit anyway. And if you don't you still follow health code, food poisoning is not the sort of gift you want to be remembered for.

The only reason to consider placement is for early entry. You have to purposely write your own WWW advertisement if you want it. Otherwise, nothing but your camp name will be listed.

I'll chime in in reverse order: follow all the safety steps necessary for the permit. I don't care if you actually have the piece of paper.

My advice. Don't register. When you arrive, claim a spot on the outer ring and do your thing.

You know the original theme camps didn't worry about registration; they just went out to the desert and did their thing.

Don't advertise it.

If you build it they will come. I you advertise it they will come in droves and DEMAND that you feed them and then leave your space looking like it was hit with a MOOP meteor.

Since I love going against the masses, I say ADVERTISE THE HELL OUT OF YOUR CAMP! Then when you run out of food, you can tell everyone to F*off because you won't feel bad about not feeding anyone else (I mean, you out of food right?).

After that, you can just enjoy the rest of the week without worrying about the logistics of feeding all those needy hippies.

I think I've spread enough negativity in this post.

Whether or not you advertise, you WILL need to get a temporary health permit if you are serving any food. Full stop.

They are easy to get and if you are going to serve food there you have to get one.

Grab the application here:

http://health.nv.gov/PDFs/BFHS/Temporar ... aR2010.pdf

fill it out. mail it in. pick up your permit at the burn. yes you really really need it. Yes they will come shut you down and fine you if you don't have one.

I've eaten plenty of gifted food that I know didn't have official approval. Right or wrong, you can get away with it.

We served gads of food at the '09 burn at Stag camp. Didn't matter that we didn't advertise, we had TONS of hungry mouths to feed.

The health department also made an appearance and were NOT happy that we didn't have a permit. Get the permit. Just in case.

I say register and advertise, but have specific hours each day ( and maybe not every single day - you need to get out and see Burning Man ) when you are serving food. When you run out of food for the day, your closed. Have a lunch diner from 12 - 1:30 or whatever. Spread as much joy as is practical for you. Then close for the day and go play. Wash, rinse, repeat. :D

Well, like it or not, you just advertised.
But if you think that protecting the health of the people you feed is harming your liberties, then I'll stay away.
