Thanksgiving stories

Post by maryanimal » Mon Nov 15, 2010 7:06 pm

Ok...with the holidays coming up, how many of you have the worst/funniest Thanksgiving/Christmas stories??

Well, this story I can laugh at now, but in 1983 my ex husband got drunk (you know, the "instant asshole, just add alcohol") and picked a fight with me. Well after I verbally slaughtered him he picked up the christmas tree, lights, tinsel, bulbs and all and chucked it out the front door! LOL

Most memerable,(good memory) I was 13 with my first pair of high heels that yr, family get together type thing(you know the kind that stopped for some ?? reason for most all families today).

I was helping in the kitchen to set all the food on the table...I steeped down into the indoor porch where Grandma's elaborate table was set,Fine crystal and the burgandy Wedgwood set, me with the stuffing in grandma's Wedgewood serving bowl with matching lid...tripped over the area rug and proceeded to throw the decorative rare bowl and lid straight up in the air....

80% of the stuffing was in it...I was mortified! It took us 5 yrs to find and replace said Wedgewood piece, to which I never volunteer to this day to even touch it(as it now is in my mothers collection) and eventually will be in mine...I wonder how the heck I will be able to use it? EVER?

Grandma, of course was her usual so loving a woman, sat with me whilst I cried my eyes out for ruining the whole dinner...(you now how Hormonal young girls are!!!) And assured me that all was not lost and that it was a special piece but nothing close to how special I was.

I miss Gramma...
Names pinemom, but my friends call me "Piney".

I had happy memories at Christmas. When I was a kid watching my mom and gramma making the traditional italian christmas cookie and cannoli. My aunt Vi and Uncle Fred (my godfather and one of my mom's older brothers) would come from NY and always bring a jar of fresh maple syrup. I remember it being dark amber. Plus there were other goodies sfinge and pignolatti. The families (btw we're all sicilians) would come together and my cheeks (on my face) would get well pinched with the loving words, (dulche mia, my sweet). The memories come back to me in warm waves. How I miss those family members that have long since passed. But the memories will be with me for a life time! I now make the traditional cookies and the other goodies since my mom no longer can. And it is my honor to continue the tradition.

All my love to:
big Gramma
Uncle Joe
Aunt Marie
Uncle Fred
Aunt Vi
Aunt Lena
Uncle Marshall
Uncle Tony
Aunt Anna
Uncle Tom
Aunt Antoinette

I loved you all!

In 1980 my folks and I flew to New York for a small family reunion of sorts, on my moms side. It was around Thanksgiving week.
Before the reunion, we drove up to New England and spent a night in Brattleboro, Vermont. Next to the motel was a small gift shop called The Vermont Country Store and they sold bottles of REAL maple syrup.
We bought two bottles. Actually they were metal cans.
Since then, I'd die for real maple syrup. I have to settle for the brands in the store that cost $8.00 for a 12oz bottle.

I learned to stay away from syrup in metal cans. www.maplesource.com
The vermontmaple.org site listed several places to order syrup on line.
Many thanks maryanimal.

Some of my best Thanksgiving memories were in the Navy, where we all were far from home and cobbled together dinners. My first turkey was at a dinner in a beach house in Zushi, the only place where we had an oven. It was the most beautiful turkey I ever cooked.

Our last big turkey day with the whole family, including my mom and dad and brother Larry, was six years ago, at my house. I had 30 people crammed in my basement.

Worst Thanksgiving. My Dad died. After having Thanksgivings since then tinged with that... this year, I realized that the calendar date of Thanksgiving is not always the same... so it isn't Thanksgiving that is the real anniversary. it's ok.

My most unusual Thanksgiving was two years ago. I was driving West on I80 and I stopped for a visit with the two brothers who own Roller Coaster Fireworks in Battle Mountain, NV. (One of which did the pyro for the Man a few times) It was dinner time and I thought we would all go out for Thanksgiving dinner, my treat. When we arrived I learned that everything was closed, including Mc Donalds. Steve, being a resident of Battle Mountain said " I know where we can get a great meal and have a good time". It turned out the the local brothel always puts on a spectacular meal for anyone who stops in on Thanksgiving. The food was like Mom used to make, the conversation was "stimulating" and a good time was had by all. The only down side was explaining to my wife the unique menu I brought home from that trip. The menu had nothing to do with their culinary delights.
Those who think they can and those who think they can't are both right.

We put this plaque under a big mango tree in Fiji. I added two of his favorite trivia bits, that were his standard answers to questions we were slow to find the answers to.

Fuck the calendar date. We don't respond to the calendar, we respond to the day, or the week or in my case, perhaps, the last couple of months heading into the five-year anniversary. It will always be thanksgiving, although it may get other memories overlayed so it's not as sad, but more bittersweet.

You are really right, but I just thought I'd give it a try, and see if helped some years. A trick sometimes helps.

All right...now that another thanksgiving has passed, let's hear the stories! Good, bad or indifferent! Other than having a 17+ pound frozen turkey fall on my toes 2 weeks ago, I had a wonderful Turkey Day! Les and the kids came over for dinner!

What I want to know maryanimal is when the turkey fell on your toes did you you scream and cuss out loud or take it silently, limp away and act like nothing happened even though you were in extreme pain?

In the early 80’s the following happened between Thanksgiving and Christmas 3 years in a row……

1981 Day after Thanksgiving – Grandfather Died
1982 15 December – Aunt Died
1983 22 December Mom Died
1984 Called oldest Brother on Christmas Day; first thing out of his mouth was, “We made it!â€

I let out a loud "SHIT", then a less vocal Son of a Bitch, and to end it all I growled Fuuuuuuuuck. Then I whimpered and tried to hold back tears. I hobbled down the isle to tell a floor manager that the turkeys in the frozen case were unstable and explained what happened. Then he wrote out an incident report. I tell you what, I'm skiddish around freezer cases now.

My grandfather would make Menudo, before the family came by for Thanksgiving. He loved shopping at the thrift store, and came home with a pressure cooker to make the menudo. Before we arrived, the lid failed and pressure cooker exploded. Was still Hominy and tripe stuck to the cieling, when we arrived.
