Most interesting/tasty beers?

Post by busgypsy » Sat Nov 27, 2010 3:14 pm

I would be hard pressed (hell lightly pressed would be cool) to say that I am a beer conniseur, but last night I had the very fortunate opportunity to try a beer made in Scotland called Tactical Nuclear Peguin with 32% alcohol. First of all I was shocked at it's cost which was $75.00 for one bottle. Two friends split the cost and then shared the beverage via shot glasses. The aroma alone sent twinges through the nasal passage and the first taste had a very whiskey flavor with a beer feel.
There wicked cool thing was the website and how TNP is made. What local or international small micro brews have you tried?

I tried some Dogfish head 120min IPA several years ago. It was ~24% alcohol and around $12/bottle. It was fairly pleasant considering how strong it was. One bottle and I was done for the night, haha.

Buckbean Brewery in Reno. Here are my favorite Buckbean brews. Descriptions were plagarized from the web. BTW - the Very Noddy is 10.5%

Image

Black Noddy - Dark espresso brown with sepia tints in the light, this schwarzbier lager had an earthy aroma with a slight citrus tang. This carried over in the taste - lots of earthy and mineral flavors, roasted black coffee, and a whistle-clean finish. It's a good sipping beer and was fantastic with food.

Very Noddy - Brewed in honor of the founder's 40th birthday, this is the Black Noddy on steroids. The description says that this beer has twice the malts and hops at the Black Noddy, and we believe it. If possible, it's blacker than the original Noddy, and it pours slick and syrupy with deep roasted aromas. Check out that head of foam!

It has a nice arch of flavors going on. Lots of bittersweet espresso in the middle with an overlay of caramel and toasted nuts. It has a lemon peel bitterness around the edges that helps cut the heavy sweet malts. It was as thick as a milkshake and just as creamy. You could drink it with food, but we really enjoyed it after the meal was over and we could fully appreciate all the flavors.
You know it's going to be a bad day when you jump out of bed and miss the floor.

I rarely buy anything more than $12 a bottle but have had a few good +20% brews.

My current go-to brews are Lucky Bucket, Boulevard Wheat and New Belgium Fat Tire.

I have really grown to like the darker brews although I will lighter with a micro brew for a first time taste. I will have to track down the Noddy beers they sound good. And Now on my list of beers to try would be Lucky Bucket. Part of sparked my interest in Tactical Nuclear Penguin was the brew process and freaking videos.

One of my favorites, especially for cold weather, is about 2/3 oatmeal stout topped off w/ 1/3 chocolate stout.

This was the first imperial stout I ever tried, and was really amazed at how tasty it was. I always thought the extremely dark beers would be bitter or undrinkable, but it's quite pleasant and smooth...

I have never mixed different brews, but sounds really good right now as our temp drops.

Not a stout, but a lovely tasting ale for sitting by the fire & sipping.

I'm starting to get into dopplebocks too, this is still one of my favorites. It's really easy to drink and has 10% alcohol.

It didn't cost $75 per bottle--less than $2 per bottle--but the best beer I have ever tasted is Ranger IPA by New Belgium Brewery. It has won over 15 of my side by side taste tastes, including one with Dogfish Head IPA. If you like a complex, layered, IPA, try it.
