I fucking HATE car shopping. Jump through this hoop, now backflip through that one...ok, you got financing lined up but with stipulations...80% book value this, yadda yadda that. Then I get to wade through all this online crap to try and find a car or truck that won't cost a king's ransom to buy, insure, and won't fall apart the first time I try and take it up to the Eisenhower Tunnel on I-70 at 11,000 ft. Then there's the unspeakable joy of dealing with packs of vultures, oops, I meant sales dogs who descend on you like a pack of rabid dogs that haven't ate in a week. Then there's the lies, damn lies, and haggling to deal with. Then there's the worry of what problems does the vehicle have that you are about to get stuck and fucked over with. Then there's the wonderful pleasure of emissions testing, then the trip to the DMV to pay out the nose for sales taxes to pay for pothole filled roads and schools that suck...

I find myself wishing I had a mass transit option about now. Car shopping seriously fucking sucks.

(I'm trying to see what the hell I can find for $6K which makes it worse. What the fuck can you get for $6K that doesn't have 150,000 miles and would still have enough power to haul my ass up over the mountains? And on top of that I don't want a gas hog...already got an F-150 that's bad enough to fill up! Fuck if I know...and oh yeah, gotta have 4 doors so it won't be a pain in the ass to put a car seat in.)

for what it's worth:
I drive, and, love, old Mercedes diesels.
no smog
simple
safe
durable,
and usually pretty darn cheap.
They go 300K unless totally abused, and, often, up to 500K miles.
you can usually get really nice ones under 4K, good drivers under 3K.
and, one with 200K on the clock, will still be running strong after the 2 year old Hyundai you get is dead and buried.

Just a fucking thought.

I research all my vehicle purchases with google searches and reading on the chat board threads that those searches yield. Saved me from even considering a VW built in the last 10 years.

Ygmir, 25 years of disaster restoration and never had a tree on the house call.. That tree thing happens a lot here in the n.west.. The ground table is close to the surface.. So the tap root is not very deep.. In other parts of the country the tap root can be 6 or more feet. The side roots go deeper too. Gives the tree a good understanding, So to speak..

Ygmir, I never considered a diesel....but that would help with my altitude problem. There are times going up to the tunnel on I-70 that I feel I should get out and push...and almost every time I go up there (2x min per week I usually get some big ass SUV flying up on me and I can't get out of the way fast enough. I'll see what I can find around here!)

And oh yeah, thank dog it's fucking Friday!

The fucking MB 300-D is a great engine. The only problem is that the oil cooler is inadequate for any climate hotter than Germany. I teed in to the stock fucking oil cooler lines and added 2 Mazda oil coolers from a rotary car. Pick-your-part. I stuffed the engine into a pickup truck and put the coolers under the truck with no fan. They're large enough to cool just fine without a fan. The 300 makes quite a bit of fucking horsepower but, you can't use it for more than a few seconds. It over heats the oil.
With the Mazda coolers, I was able to pull a heavy trailer in the mountains.

I also got a huge A.C. condenser from an earlier BMW that is built different than normal,,, for a condenser. I put it right in front of the rear tire to get turbulence. It cools the transmission very well. I ran the P.U. fro 24 years until a wrong-way driver on the freeway killed it. I had great luck by judiciously choosing junk yard parts. Fuck.

Kinetic, you should be aware of the fact that; the higher the compression ratio, the greater the torque. BUT, the higher the compression ratio, the bigger the loss at altitude. I took my MBZ truck up to 11,000 ft. on Trail Ridge Road in Colorado. It's pretty much a Jeep road. It really suffered. It did not have a turbo at the time. A turbo is a big help at altitude. FUCK

yeah, fuckin turbo is the only way to go on the 3L MBZ diesels. (5 or 6 cyl)

But, CSS, I gotta argue with you, if, you refer to the heat issue, using it in the car intended.
With a functional radiator, and, cooling system intact, those cars have NO, problem with heat. Many in my club live and travel the southwest, even death valley, in summer, with no issues.
That said, the cooling system has to be in good fucking shape, though. Not clogged radiators, etc.
Those cars have been sold all over the world, notably in the middle east, and, work just fine.

Now, if you refer to overheating, in a "Franken-benz" truck mod of some sort......well, I can't speak to that one.

I drove my 300 SDL (6 cyl, 3L turbo) over "Red Mountain" summit,(IIRC)(south from 70 near Silverton and to Durango) in CO last summer, seems it was about 12K'? I was pushing many motorhomes and such, but, did note the altitude. The turbo, is a distinct advantage there......and, being able to keep it "spun up" so as to be providing max. boost.

ygmir, I've rebuilt several 617 engines. I see tons of them that lose rod bearings from the heat. It has more to do with idling in traffic than out on the road. The Franken-Benz worked great because of all the extra coolers. If you take a good look at the arrangement of the coolers, you'll see that the oil cooler does not get any air advantage from the fan. It;s too far off to the side. The fan shroud doesn't include it. So, idling in traffic is the real killer.
The camshaft is a steel forging and the cam followers are carbide. Even with all this, the 617 gets a lot of flat cams. Once again, because of hot oil. The 617 has oil squirters on the pistons, of course. This is just that much more heat to get rid of. Same with the turbo oil. It's hot as hell and has to be cooled.
The early engines had a nice aluminum fan. The later have a POS plastic fan. It warps and flattens out. I drive a 617 T wagon at the moment. I've been driving and building the 617 for about 30 years. The engine in the wagon has a nice chain driven hydraulic pump mounted on the head. It would be a great engine to use in a tractor,,, already having an integral hydraulic pump. Next fucking life. No time in this one.

I don't understand the comment about compression hurting at altitude??

Remember that diesels are very sensitive to running too cold, a major efficiency killer.

I bought a Denver car, but generally I would avoid any used car from altitude.
Most just disintegrate from the abuse.
Mine was kitted for the load, with big brakes and power.
High compression.
No turbo, just cubic inches and high compression with very free flowing heads.
Calculations are that altitude cost about 90 horsepower.
Size accordingly.
Mine is 408.

A turbo or turbodiesel would be a good choice, esp the new ones, but there are options.

There are kits for the ford ranger to install anything up to the 351 Windsor, which is adequate there (450 hp at altitude dynoed with a mild cam, in my setup).
3 or 4 litre 6 cyls can be used with the T5.
The 5 litre V8 can be used with the T5 and many others, as can the 351.

Many vehicles have similar options, even if not so easy.

Superchargers are another option, if you choose the right type, like the gerotor.
Kennebell is available for most ford engines.

A new T5 in a crate is $1300, top torque rating too.
I can't even find a fucking new toyota trans, but the mazda in my ranger was $3000, when last sold.
May not be best price though.

Volvo 240s can be similarly optioned with the ford V8s.
Brakes already adequate.
It was designed as a V8 option car, so easy easy.
And there is the turbo already.

Fuck.

Senate failed to pass the unemployment extension- Teapublicans think that extending the deficit to help the unemployed who put every penny we get back into the economy is bad, but extending the deficit for millionaires so they can put an extra $100,000 a year into the bank is good.

Thanks to the super-rich & their allies in Congress, our household income just plummeted. Over half of what's coming in now is for rent. We have no savings, we have no fucking credit cards. I have to plan everything I cook based on how many meals we can get out of it.

I am fucked. This is the first time ever that I haven't gotten any call-backs. This is the first time since the 80's I've had to apply at more than two places before getting hired. This is the first time since 1992 that I haven't gotten the first job I've applied for- including at the end of 2008 when this recession was hitting it's worst.

I've always been able to be very selective- now I'm out of cash & desperate. I can't keep looking for a "good" or "desirable" job that might have some long term potential. I need to get some money- any money- coming in. I'm fucking apply at Staples just to keep a roof over my head. If I can't get that I'm going to cry.

Really really feeling fucked right now, and not in a good way.

And I still haven't heard from the gov't if I just made or just missed the last extensions deadline. Why rush that notification, it's not like I'm standing on the edge of a crumbling cliff or anything...

Fuck.

Not likely. The Senate Republicans are planning on holding up ALL legislation unless the Bush tax cuts are extended. You know- fuck the country unless the top 1% (who already make more than the bottom 50% combined) get tax breaks.

Hypocritical fucking assholes. I don't want a Mercedes, I want to be able to pay my fucking bills and not lose what I have. I would love to have a job & not rely on unemployment, but it isn't happening yet.

We're already parceling out what we can sell if we have to. You know- those family heirlooms that have monetary value that we never planned on letting go of because they meant more than money. That music collection I've spent 30+ years building. Those books that are in every corner of my house that I've been collecting since grade school.

worthy for the fuck thread too...

Erskine Bowles........sits on the board of Morgan Stanley....and you guessed it...no Tobin Tax (1% tax on stock trades or derivatives)

But we do have...

The plan calls for sweeping tax changes that would affect millions of Americans, including trimming or doing away with many popular tax breaks such as the home mortgage deduction. It would also make deep cuts in military spending, slash the federal work force, raise the retirement age for full Social Security benefits and make cuts in Medicare. It aims to reduce federal red ink by nearly $4 trillion within a decade.

Although prospects for the plan are unclear, the attention it has received has helped awaken the nation to the depth of the economic hole the country is in and the need for bold action to dig out, suggested Bowles, who was former President Bill Clinton's White House chief of staff. Simpson is a former Republican senator from Wyoming.

"The American people get it now. People want this to happen," Bowles said.

And a major excrement covered flying "fuck you" to you Mr. Bowles

I don't know many folks here in California that want your people hating spending cuts and tax hikes. Go fuck yourself you blind bureaucratic ruling class sociopath.

Fucking with the retirment age will come back and bit the "fuckers"

The age 62 early retire come in just after WW2.. It is designed to have older workers step down. So young workers can move into the work force.

If the age is uped to 67 it will mean the young are fucked..

Try to get started in life two years later.. Reach your prime work output two years later.. While waiting for some old fuck to get out of your way..

On and On

Oh. You can just live off your old parents for a few after you finish school.. Do a bunch of drugs and forget what you learned.. Go to work for WalMart/China..
Maybe you will find yourself squating in an alley making cheap goods for your kids to sell on the street..
