Dust & Illusions, 30 years of BM history. SCREENING Tour

Postby obonin » Wed Sep 08, 2010 1:35 pm

Welcome back. So now you've been to Burning Man, but BM hasn't always been this huge (50K people), didn't use to have cops, didn't even use to have large scale artwork. Larry Harvey claims to be the founder, and avoids, or omits mentioning what really made Burning Man possible in the early days. Now he is focused on leaving a legacy. Want to know more about the real history and debunk the stereotypes and misinformation about the festival.

Dust & Illusions: The film explores the entire history of the Burning Man event. Whether you have been to Burning Man or not, or are even interested in the subject, the film goes beyond the simple event in the desert, and looks at how ideals/utopias we've had in our youth evolve through an entire lifetime. Specifically, the documentary starts in the late 1970s with 2 groups of people out of the San Francisco underground movements all the way to the multi-million dollar business Burning Man has become, and how politics might have replaced philosophies.

A documentary screening.
PORTLAND: Oct 14th
NEWCASTLE, UK: Oct 20th
SAN FRANCISCO: Oct 28th
SACRAMENTO: Nov/Dec 2010
LA: March 2011
TOKYO: April 2011

TRAILER: http://dustandillusions.com/trailers

You want to see the film but it's not coming to your town, well it's BM style, you have to organize a screening. Don't hesitate to contact me if you want to share this film with your fellow citizens. All these screenings above are happening because people came forward. This is a real INDIE film (not like sundance though) supported by the community.

In 1988, people organizing BM didn't even know about the Black Rock desert, this is how it came on their radar:

Hello everyone. As I said if the film is not coming to your town, then you should contact me to help organize a screening. I usually don't initiate screenings without the help of local burners.

Thx!

What are your fees? Do you charge airfare, lodging, per diem, etc?

We would love to have you bring your film to Orlando. We can set up a screening for all of the FL Burners here. Feel free to email me with the details.

What other people think about you is none of your business.

There's no fees to setup the screening. You help me figure out the right local indie theater where to play it at, and how to get the word out, and I book the theater, etc...

Does that mean one in Orlando for early next year is a no-go?

LOS ANGELES + Panel Discussion w/ John Law and more.

March 6th. That's in 3 days, the big LA premiere for the film at the American Cinematheque. As always the film is only visible on the big screen.

This time we'll have a series of characters on stage: JOHN LAW, MICHAEL MIKEL, BRIAN DOHERTY and myself... and maybe another surprise. Maybe.

I recommend to get the tickets at the box office of the Cinematheque, because they are organizing this screening not me, and this is done through Fandango sadly, and you would get charged a $1.25 fee on a... $10 ticket :(

--------
PORTLAND. March 24th

This is yet another screening I put on myself, so this time there's no extra corp fee in the ticket price. It's $8 to $15, whatever you can afford.

You can also invite 200+ people to the FB event, and you get a FREE ticket. If you have access to substantial mailing list in Portland, that will work just as well!

---------
EUGENE, OR. MArch 23rd.

Same deal as Portland, cheaper tickets. Facebook event here

Chicken John? give me a break! the Cacophony Society had a bigger part in it! A HUGE part to be exact! Who cares anymore? Larry's been doing a fine job so far! If anyone wanted to claim "ownership" they should have stuck around!

Don't worry CS is well represented in the film, but I keep that for people who go watch the film.

How about Columbus?

Postby Phinneas » Mon Mar 14, 2011 5:34 am

We have a couple of theaters that regularly support indie films. What can be done on my end to help realize a Columbus, Ohio screening, if it's not too late?
