US Gypsum to close. Gerlach to dry up and blow away?

I just went to youtube and plugged "gerlach" into the search function.
'72...close enough. Yep that's it. Thanx! I was 1year old!
I was told they lit that building on fire for the making of this movie.

If true, I guess that makes them prehistoric burners.

Does anyone know if that is true?
Did they actually light that building on fire for the movie?

If they did, were in the right place! The original Burners!

I think you're actually thinking of Slab City, which is in the far south of California, near the Salton Sea. Nowhere near Burning Man, and not really a place most .... uh ....... lets just say "average" people would live.

That could very well be Eric! I remember reading or looking at photos and I could've sworn the said it wasn't far from BRC. Oh well, there wasn't many folks living there anyway.
Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.

I remember who told me; it is the guy who runs Freinds of Black Rock Desert,
I cannot recall his name or exact title but he was set up at the Reno Decomp and had the videos running.
He also had some other early footage, it was all interesting stuff...some grainy videos of himself setting stuff up way, waaay back when...then a girl showed up and he got very distracted! Hahaha...down boy!
At that point I drifted back inside the club...left them to their freindly meeting~

I don't pretend to understand nevada politics, I just like the gun parts. Gerlach seems steeped in drama. Perfect for Burning Man. I know it first hand, and I will shut my mouth now.

And since I've never been to a burn, I would love to visit Gerlach and Empire next year. Sure wish there was a way to help them.
Why don't you call Santa Clause? Or Jesus.

I had a long talk with Santa about this when I saw him at the mall yesterday. He claims he knows nothing about this, but Santa knows everything, so he was lying to me. After a very long conversation while sitting on his lap, mall security came and took me to their magic room. I guess they never heard of Empire Nevada either!

I'm sure one of those folks in the video was Larry 'the Hat' looking into the Gerlach real estate market...

The first thing I heard of when this story broke was the guy who rehabbed the Empire Store and sunk so much time and money into it. This seriously sucks for him. But then again when I walked in their place post-rehab I saw a chaotically run store with massive room for improvement and an attitude that didn't look like it had been updated from the previous owners.

In short I guess this is karma's way of balancing her cosmic spreadsheet...it is what it is. Find a good bankruptcy attorney, say it was a good run and wait for the next Nevada ghost town book to come out with a new addition of Empire on it. With a situation this bleak cut your losses and move on. The odds of that plant reopening are slim....I'd have better odds winning MegaMillions and Powerball in the same week.

So Goodbye Empire! When I take my little boy through there in a few years it will be another historical footnote I can tell him about.

As for Gerlach...the only thing saving it from a similar fate IMHO is the fact UP's transcon is still there...those rails and the siding still give it a reason to be listed on the map. And as the true jumping off point to the Black Rock...it won't just dry up and blow away.

And BTW, for those that commented about the store's "new" owners.

They are the same "original" owners, not new at all.

The guy that WAS running it for them just thought that he owned it, because of running it for so long.

....and then in a few years when the Burning Man fesival makes plans to move to another location, you will end up with a vacant storage building. Maybe if Walmart puts up a superstore there, it will attract all sorts of other industries around it, and the employees will need lots of housing.

Interesting. I never knew of that place before.

Sorry to hear about US Gypsum closing and the effects it will have on those communities.

If you look to your left, past the store, you'll see the loading area for trucks. That section of 447 that has about a 20' wide concrete "driveway" of sorts crossing the highway is part of the haul road for the haulpak dump trucks to take raw material from the mine to the plant.

Oh, a sleeping drunkard
Up in Central Park,
And a lion-hunter
In the jungle dark,
And a Chinese dentist,
And a British queen--
All fit together
In the same machine.
Nice, nice, very nice;
Nice, nice, very nice;
Nice, nice, very nice--
So many different people
In the same device.
