Sorry to laugh but it gives new meaning to "that smarts" when referring to pain.

I always hear, honey is a cheap source of Vit B and a teaspoon "fools" the brain/body into thinking it "got the bee pollen" (bee pollen daily is best, but costlier)
I'm glad, honey saves some money and tatses better, thank you very much.
However, I do miss the bee pollen on cold cereal.

My bee keeper freinds told me they stopped eating bee pollen because when they collected it, the smaller hole for the bees to enter the hive would scrape off some of the bees legs! :cry:
They took the smaller hole entrance plate off, they just could not do that to their bees anymore...they get plenty of honey..

@darathaersa...what's the best way to store honey?
i do bee pollen in yogurt with honey... it's like nectar from the gods, i swear! but i'm going to have to look in to collection methods now. that makes me sad. i'm going to be very sad if i have to give up my pollen, it's so freaking good for you.

b vitamins are essential when dealing with nerve pain.

i believe the best way to store honey is in glass or anything else not-plastic and room temperature and dark. so the back of the cabinet is perfect. ;) i've heard that they've actually cracked open clay jars that were found in ancient egyptian tombs and found honey in them that was over a thousand years old and still good...

i wonder if this still counts as part of the fitness thread, or if we've hijacked it with our "semi-crippled-fools-with-nerve-issues" conversation... ;)

As for thread drift.... I you're asking me, who started this thread, then the answer is NO PROBLEM! Anything that will improve somebody's health is welcome here, even if basic exercise-and-portion-control is the core of the thread.

Thanks Elliot.... and daratheresa, we have a juice bar and supplements and whatever we want here at EFC! Anything and anything, PT physical therapy too
fyi, in a nut shell all medical advice is just to be considered opinion...it's in the CG (community guidelines) bottom line, we can enjoy fitness health n humor and sooo much more, 'nuff said on my part.
If more needs to be added on that subject or any other, one of our more experienced members will add it as needed. It is the way, "the force" 8)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
@daratheresa...Yup, B Vitamins are paramount to nerve health (maybe the bee's legs grow back or I would just NOT worry about it hunny! maybe I shoulda kept quiet on that issue but we are also scientific here sooo...let's be realistic...for me it was cost savings. I still do buy bee pollen on occaision :shock:) the honey is just cheaper and is supposed to work almost as well & thanks for the storage tips darathersa, and yea, yougurt yum!
Some freinds from France taught me that goat milk products are easier to digest. I wonder do they make goat milk butter?! :D
Honey flavors; black berry is schweet, also orange and clover...I want to try the one that starts with a T....from the South and made from the bubble gum
tree, expensive but wtf, I must try it once!
If someone knows the name and where to order for good price. please shout out. (it's rare and expensive :cry: )
It would be very cool to hear all of the favorite Honey flavors from eplayans
google came up with a jillion...Hawaiian, Georgia Peach, Savory etc..I couldn't find the bubble gum one though :?
Ok, soon I will be strapping into some boots and going for a stroll in the rainy, icy drizzle down my snowy as can be street. I actually have "shoe chains" can beleive that shit? They are for safety, I feel like a kook when I wear them but I CANNOT have another slip and fall...ever. It's that or throw salt/ice melter in front of me the WHOLE way and that is called pollution/MOOPing.
I use the "green" ice melter sparingly for my short walkway and that's it...stuff is pricey but needed.
I hope everyone else is keeping up their routine...eh hem, and beware the fattening holidays are here! ~)(~ that's a very thin man for motivation
(sorry, he lost his head, just a temporary condition, until the next burn, haha)
PS I learned in Hawaii, papayas and squashes have a digestive enzyme...hmmm...thankfully I like pumkin pie (made the hippie way, with honey)
I'm the MAN in a truck, burner who is stuck, you're in luck! I'll whip out my BIG tow chain and not charge you, not even one lousy buck!
I think this will be my first post in this thread; but I wanted to share my weight-loss/fitness results since Burning Man this year.
First, I lost almost 30 lbs, with three more to go to hit my goal weight.
I was able to accomplish this by doing only two things...walking at least a half hour every day. (Many days an hour or more--5 to 6 miles--sounds like a lot, but it's a lot easier than it sounds, especially when the "goal" was only 1/2 hour.) The walk was at 3.5 miles/hour. The motivator for this was a little program on my smart phone called "Tracks" which records time, miles, miles per hour, elevation, etc.
Second, I found and downloaded another app called myFitnessPal, which enabled me to set weight loss goals (I chose to lose 1.5 pounds per week); then I was able to track the calories of everything I ate or drank, offset by the number of calories I burned through my walks. I ate just about anything and everything, but made sure that I never (rarely) exceeded my daily calorie allocation. (If I was going to go out to a restaurant, or Thanksgiving Diner for example, I added an extra hour to my walk in anticipation of eating a huge meal.)
After losing about 20 Lbs., I started taking a Yoga for Seniors class at a neighborhood park--and am doing this religiously every Monday, Wednesday and Friday with the main goal of recovering my flexibility and the added benefit of both cardio and strengh as well.
Starting next week, I'm back to the gym on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday as well, to help build some muscle mass as well.
My last three pounds should bring me down to 150 pounds, about 5 pounds heavier than when I was in the military back in 1968.
Yesterday I had a doctors appointment and all my blood work came back better than it has been in years and the amount of medication I take for my blood pressure was cut in half. She's thinking that by the time my next appointment comes around in another four months, I may be off the BP meds altogether.
The only downside is that none of my clothes fit me anymore. But on the upside, what better excuse for going out shopping.
That's fabulous, JK, and you hint at a very important point: The most difficult part of going for a good walk, is getting out of the house.
Unfortunately, I live in a run-down neighborhood, so I have given up on walking straight from my house -- too depressing. Instead, I invest a dollar in driving two miles to the State Park, which is clean and scenic, with several miles of excellent hiking trails. This improved environment is a major encouraging factor for me. Once I start walking, my eyes are constantly scanning for deer and other wildlife (saw a big buck deer quite close a few days ago), and I find no reason to stop until I get good-n-tired.
Minor thread drift...
IMHO, ygmir, if you haven't already, you should consider joining the Reno regionals annouce list, maybe Dr. Pyro and others geographically close, also some from afar with excellent writing and education might do some good there. jkisha I have no clue if you are close but you too perhaps. Just sayin'
I'm going for my walk in the dark now (headlamp time, yea!..I may skip blinkies though :lol: )...I was delayed because the Reno regionals annouce list is on fire today over the damaging effects the closing of USG is expected to bring to Gerlach AND they are calling for positive comments, (postive I remind) for an upcoming meeting for permit renewal.
BLM meeting is 12/6/10 and email comments can be sent until 12/13/10.
Anyhow, no more excuses but there were some silly/prankster burners mucking things up a bit on our "announce list" and that is my "excuse" for delaying my walk. I didn't post to the backyard burner Reno regional list, thankfully the big cats from reality camp did step in and clear the messy sandbox up, phew. I may be a ghost from the past but I do have common sense & I needed some mental clarity before my walk.
Thanks Elliot.
One nice thing about living where we do in L.A. is that we are within walking distance to Runyan Canyon, which is a beautiful hiking park. And you are right, it is often a pleasant change of pace to walking around the neighborhood for us. (Also a motivator is that my partner joins me on most walks.)
Another thing I found important was to just limit my walks to 1/2 hour at first, and not to even worry about the pace, but just to do them regularly. Keeping goals low and just making sure you get out and accomplish them was also important motivation for me.
Thanks. Not sure if I'm an inspiration, but something about hitting retirement age seemed to put a spark under my butt. I want to be able to enjoy my huge social security checks until the money runs out! LOL
The best thing is being able to get up and down off the floor and even site on the floor comfortably again. (Another seemingly small accomplishment, but it wasn't for me. I'll be able to get in and out of our 4' yurt a whole lot easier now.)
You know, it's interesting, that we didn't do all that much together while you lived here, but since you have moved away, I really miss you! I guess it was comforting to know you were just down the street.
From the pictures I saw, you have a lot of scenic areas where you are now. Though I'm not sure how conducive the cold and snow is to walking.
Reno regional list and permit renewal meeting Thursday after work this week.
Deadline to write BLM with positive compliments about ECO freindly playa BM combo is the news they can use...12/13 via email.
To the writers, jkisha, , , ,...
The retired BLM man named COOP seems to have the Reno regional list grounded.
Without trying to give an exact quote;
He states he does an unbiased report, in short multi orgs compile data. It sounds positive for the permit over next 5 years, the permit will be approved for 2011+, it covered many topics, including Gerlach and Empire's grim future.
As for BM's future at the playa it looks good if the ecology, etc remain safe.
For obvious reasons Gerlach wants BM more than ever before, BM is the last thing they have hope for.
~~~~~~~~~~
That is a strong email for me to read, they listed a dozen other bombshells for Gerlach, aside from Empire being toast.
Stuff like 12 businesses in Gerlach drastically affected and on and on for Gerlach and surrounds... :(

Something confused me, the 5 year permit allows for a 60,000 increase, huh?
moonrise's thoughts are; perhaps a look back at history and it might matter if feedback is given now, (it mattered a lot the last renewal time! perhaps more positive reasons to renew coudln't hurt down the road)
take the 5 year chunks of time in small bites. 60.000 at 5000 more per year. hmmm, do the math and get huh?
I know I'd need help with that math!
Maybe it'll go to 2 years chunks at 5000 more per year, just askew the numbers a bit, even the fed govrnmt likes that, hahaha.
@jkisha, COOP sent me a detailed message. PM me if interested.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gerlach's predicted near future;
The popualtion drop was staggering, aprox 456 current, after USG leaves, 156 for Gerlach!!!! (and long lost, empty Empire) Medical clinic going, elderly follows next within these next few weeks/months. Ouch! They don't sound glad.
I did my walks today, what did you burn,,,er uh,,, walk or do today for exercise?! :lol:
low impact: swimming. rowing. bike riding's not terrible. yoga. yoga. more yoga. seriously. people hear "yoga" and think of the super-advanced pretzel stuff and get scared. it's not like that. i picked up an instructional tape when my oldest kid was just a baby, and started doing it by myself, in my livingroom, where nobody could see me cause i didn't want anyone to laugh at me. all it is is stretching and breathing. not difficult at all. learn how to do a simple sun salutation and every muscle in your body will thank you immediately. it did take me almost a year of stretching before i could touch my toes again, but being that flexible is not a requirement. the whole point is stretching as far as you are comfortable with and sllloooowwwwlllyyyy pushing past that. and while there are fast-paced aerobic styles of yoga there are also slow-paced relaxing styles of yoga and rehabilitation styles of yoga. i take bits and pieces of each and throw them together in to something that works for me.
http://yoga.about.com/od/yogasequences/ ... esteps.htm
(for step 2, it took me over a year to be able to actually reach the floor. i was told to just hang your arms down toward the floor as though they were too heavy to hold up. stretches similar muscles. the whole point of yoga is to work within your own abilities, it's not a contest...)
today i have burned, er, uh, exercised not at all yet. it's morning. we chill in the mornings, watch cartoons and lounge about in our pajamas. our day will start soon enough. :) with any luck my friend wants to take the kids and i to the community center around the corner from us later, which has an indoor playground separated from the gym area by a glass wall so you can watch your kids while you work out. it's a pretty sweet set-up. but i am NOT walking there today, though it's only a few blocks away. it's 12 degrees outside right now. screw that. :p
Hey Moon,
Big Dog is a pit/ridgeback mix her name is Petey McPants, she's not that big but compared to my pugs she is.. :lol: She sets a pretty fast pace!
I will be signing up for regionals tonight after work...thanks for the reminder.
@Daratheresa...thanks for the yoga tips...also sounds like you've got the kids and routine balanced, whew!
@Lucky, I'm connecting the dots! Pug is the black sheep in fur vest, hahaha...what does the Petey think about that?! :shock: or 8)
The regional list was on fire yesterday...interesting stuff.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have 2 faq's...
I'm going to add in some morning meditation; is that good at wake up time?
Focus on my goals; but with eyes shut or looking into the forest?
I can choose either. I live in in the middle of nowhere (not the one near Empire) before the accident(s) I could eat breakfast and walk to the Pacific Crest Trail from my back door..left is Mexico, Right is Canada...pretty kewl.
Never went all the way, LOL, but it's a cool trail system to check out once in a while.
no brainer here...
I'm goin' for my 30 minute minimum walk here soon, just checkin' in 8) also, before the walking, I'll get back into the 30 min of stretches I am supposed to do daily...they do seem to help...the hams, calves and thighs...those 3 should be stretched daily for sure.

Good work folks!

I did 30 minutes of hard riding on my bike the past 3 days (hard being pumping as fast as I can for more than half that time at the highest gearing). Lots of sweating. Today I'm devoting to other exercises: weights, situps, etc.
It's going to be alright.

sputnik, that's inspiring and a bit of envy on my part...here's to ya!

I'm off to do my routine.
I wish there was a swimming pool in my little town.
For now walking and the few various other improvements will be my plan.

One hour of Yoga (Hatha style), 1.5 hour walk. 151 pounds on the scale, one more to go and I'll be at my target weight goal of 150. Adding weight training at the gym starting next Tuesday--T,Th,F will be gym and M,W,F will be yoga.

i do yoga with the kids, too. sometimes they participate, watching a two-year-old do yoga is one of the most adorable things ever. sometimes they just climb on me while i do it. i can hold a downward-dog for eight and a half minutes with a four-year-old on my back...

we never did make it to the gym the other day. relying on other people for rides really sucks sometimes. bleh.

i'm thinking of taking up another easy to do at home exercise thing. i'm torn between tai-chi and belly dancing. anyone have any experience with either?

@daratheresa...I see no season why you can't do yoga at home but I think you should try to go when your ride does show up, ugh, stranded is no fun.

Thai Chi is fairly easy isn't it? I did it way way back, it's a form of meditation right?

Belly Dancing?! hahaha, for burning man?!?!, for the sake of dawg daratheresa, you'd be a smash hit anywhere and everywhere...if there were a poll here it'd 99.99% in favor of Belly Dancing....I saw some but there's a LOT of dancing going on, a lot, in camp, wherever you want!
Center Camp has a 24/7 open stage and on and on...out on the open playa, out at sunrises...the man, the temple...the theme camps...endless...one time this couple jumped into a crowded dance group and did a mesmerizing fire dance routine...we gave them space, haha, it was a good night...

Back to reality camp for moon...I'm thinkin' I might be able to give a shout out and get joined to a "private" swimmin' pool...I'd drag myself to a pool.
We don't have any public pools here :( maybe a burner owns a place at the private pool...it's hardly used, members pay big bucks in dues...might as well get some use out of it....summer I can swim the ropes at the lake, winter yarite, lol..I'd drown...frigid cold...Brrrr...

I'm feeling a bit better already...time for stretches and a walk (before dark! if I walk in the dark the neighbors all stop and ask if I need help, LOL, duh..I have a headlamp on...so what? can't I go for a walk at night? I am the moon for dawgs sakes! haha..it's not like I wore blinkies! btw, one dog on the block wears a blinkie, lucky dawg, hehehe...owner has burned too, she's hot and fun)

Ok, I'm off this word/work box...time for action, the Sun, my distant cousin is out and shining...must enjoy that and quick before more clouds.

oh, i've always been a dancer, bad feet and all. ballet when i was a kid, years of club dancing, rave dancing, crazy pagan naked in the woods dancing... i like dancing. glad to hear there's going to be lots of dancing when i get there. :) i guess that tilts the scales in favor of belly dancing for my next hobby/fitness fad.

@lucky420, a hangover is a perfectly acceptable excuse to take a day off. we understand. ;) drink lots of water and try again tomorrow. :p

@lucky...hang in there!

@daratheresa...are you friggin kidding me? (sorry bout the feet btw) you can dance away onto the flat expanse of the playa for miles! at least a mile for dawgs sakes...endless dance space 24/7 music (techno, ouch buuut, no futher comment,,, ducking) yes, there is a struggle with lousy too loud crappy techno...but, uh, some of it is good........there will be music, let's just say that.

lucky went, ask away, she'll confirm endless room to dance!...many burners just dance all night and into the sunrise....also try to catch a sunrise out at the trash fence...can dance there too....over 1000+ catch the sunrise at the fence...sun meditation and endless other interesting activities.....amazing place at BRC, try not to miss that at least once imho...

I just did my 40 mins walkin, smiles for miles, now some stretches etc...keep on movin' hahaha and back to the word/work box, ugh, boooring!
