Freecycle - a great way to give/get what's needed for playa

Post by spank » Sat Jul 10, 2004 6:52 pm

Hey Ya'all,

Last year in September I gave Freecycle a big push and now we're up to 200,000 people in 950 cities worldwide. It's a huge experiment in gifting and has been a ton of fun. If you're not already on a local list, I highly recommend joining one and seeing what you can get for the playa and it's also a great place to give away what you no longer need. If there isn't a freecycle group in your hood, start one.

Locations and how to get one started: www.freecycle.org

See you at the Post Office

I've been having fun following the local Freecycle group. Unfortunately, I haven't been quick enough to respond to get anything I have wanted.... :? Luckily ( :?: ) thus far nothing I have really needed has shown up, just an occasional item I thought might be nice to have. I'm still trying to bring myself to part with some of the stuff I have lying around (such as an ancient Trek bicycle, some collectible card games which are worth putting up for bid on E-Bay, etc.)

This year, half my food staples (rice, pasta, raisins), two of my three coolers, the materials for 90% of my shade canopy and the curtains that will go over my car's windows came to me courtesy of Freecycle :)

And Spank, 5,000 points of Honour and Wisdom renown to you and may Shiva grant you the boon of your choosing :D

There should have been a "not" between the "are" and "worth".... Oh, well....

Got a really nice post from Brad/Art who is this great guy from PDX. He's moved to Medford, OR to take care of his Mom and started up Freecycle Medford. Got a cool article in the local paper and they're off and running.

It's fun being visionary.

I'm also trying to create a national park out of Mt. Hood.

Adios, see you on the playa. Perhaps at the postofffice late at night.

Thanks for posting this! I just checked it out very quickly and found out my local group has over 100 members! We've got 5 bicycles in various stages of use/unuse. This may be a great way for us to gift some parts and maybe put together a useable bicycle for the playa. It's great to see gifting going on in the local community.
