Burning Man Left Overs

Post by Clar-i-ty » Sun Dec 05, 2010 12:38 pm

So here we are three months later, and I've finally dealt with my left overs from the Playa. Typically, most of my left overs are converted into my Earthquake Box. This includes fuel for my camp stove, much of the non-perishable food, and other essentials that have no other place in day to day life.

I always also end up with a box of odds and ends. Things like bungee cords, clips, and batteries etc. This box proved to be beneficial this week when I ran out of zip lock bags. Times being what they are, and funds being low, it's nice to have a reserve of stuff to pull from. Thus my Playa left overs continue to support Radical Self Reliance.

Any similar experiences? What do you do with your Burning Man leftovers?

Leftover non-perishable food goes onto MyLarry's truck as truck food. We do camp other times of the year, so camping supplies get used up, as does propane when we grill or use flame throwers for fun. Costumes get worn all year. We have bins stacked outside in the lean to behind the garage, all the camping gear neatly sorted and labeled: kitchen box, food box (empty), light box, blinkie box, safety box, hat and boots box (empty~ish), art boxes, bike box (parts and spares). The carports and carpets are stored under them, the trikes alongside. The bedding stays in the duffel bags stored in the garden shed after cleaning. The tents and chairs and cot and tables are in the garage.

The tools are used all year, same ones for everything MyLarry does around the house.

I keep the expensive gear in plastic crates. I made it a point...weight be damned...to use the sturdiest stuff available. Car ports last a lot longer than strung up tarps. T posts last a hell of a lot longer than rebar...and I don't wind up with waste rope. I even save the bungee balls, after the bungee failed...if you have extra bungee and know how to tie a knot, they can be rebuilt.

Clar-i-ty since you're "one of us" you should have me or any of the other Barbiebarians store "leftovers" in the storage shed for whenever! Membership has it's privileges.

Pyro, there's a good chance I'll take you up on that seeing how I'll be out of the country for the next burn.

Well, I went to BM once and LoF once, and a regular camping trip with my brother in between. The same tent has gone on all three with me. My sleeping bag has been in use since the late 1970s/early 1980s. The cot which went to BM with me I attempted to use for sleeping a couple times since, and is now taking up space in my apartment until I decide what to do with it (probably Free-Cycle)-- I am far less than pleased with the d---ed thing. My inflatable Ralph Wiggums went to BM, and was present at LoF along with the inflatable Monty Burns I purchased when I got Ralphie.

My propane stove went to BM and LoF. The extra propane from BM disappeared on me at some point, so I had to buy new for LoF. My folding chairs see regular use every summer-- whether or not I go to anything Burner related, as do my coolers.

So... I guess my answer really should have been "Depends upon the item in question."

Hell, I got shit stored all over the place. Closets, camper, sheds, under the deck, all in the ubiquitous totes. A lot of it is re-purposed for other camping trips, and like BAS, Lakes of Fire.
Excuse me Ma'am, your going to feel a small prick.

Leftovers? Food leftovers get eaten. Equipment isn't really leftovers, I use it for other burns and trips. It's all in the same bins I travel with, on my side porch.

This year, because I made some PWR-specific costumes, I'm not sure what to do with them. I didn't wear them at the other burns...I like having playadust in my food drawer at work.
