Actually we have a fine example from just today when Keith Ellison (D-MN) said that Obama should cause a crises in order to provide the cover to "hike taxes on the rich".
They always approach this from the wrong angle. Rather than punishing the rich, they should be setting conditions such that there are more of them ... so that more of the people can move up and become "rich". But no, that would go against everything they stand for.
As "the rich" pay the bulk of the taxes in this country, making a few more rich people will have more impact than raising the taxes on the existing ones.
Rather than create more programs to give more people money, maybe they could work harder at creating conditions where they more easily find jobs and don't need the damned programs. That also eliminates the need to raise taxes as it increases revenue and decreases outlays in those programs.
They (the progressive) approach the problem from the wrong direction. To them, making the problem worse is better and making things better is worse.

Have you considered that maybe it is you who is the ignorant one in this case and simply parroting what Maddow says might not look so smart?neon tetra wrote:I think it's more about people not even reading through a thread, but still adding their sliver of ignorance.

Nope. Because nothing in this thread is based on anything that Maddow said. It is based on her guest, who is the actual sponsor of the anti-gay bill and member of 'The Family'. Perhaps if you actually watched the interview in the OP you would be up to speed on the conversation. Instead, you just decided to chime in with your partisan rubbish & completely ignore the topic at hand.geekster wrote: Have you considered that maybe it is you who is the ignorant one in this case and simply parroting what Maddow says might not look so smart?

Do you fold or crumble?
I think people who say "an historic..." sound a bit pretentious.
Snowboarding is so much fun, even though I break ribs a lot.
Bird poop is the only animal poop that I'll 'flick' away if it's on a bench & I want to sit down.
Staying on topic in a thread is so lame, right?

You're right. I think I was a bit too honest in another thread, which caused somewhat of a backlash against me (even in threads I hadn't posted in yet).ygmir wrote:Crimeny!!!!

And because of that, I'm feeling a little defensive.
Duly noted.

My last comment on this thread. Probably. It was the assertion that the GOP is somehow directly linked to this lunacy. That's like saying the Democrats are directly linked to linching blacks because Senator Byrd of West Virginia was a member of the KKK. The Democrats did that, but to assert that now they do is absurd. Hay, maybe this isn't the best forum to start a politically charged thread with specious proof (though I know the Ugandans are doing this reprehensible act) which paints all Republicans in a very negative light. Your social agenda should be left for someplace other than here. Bigot.

So let's sum up your ignorance so far in this thread:
First, if Rachel reported it, it has no credibility.
Second, Rachel might not even be a woman. (I sense some homophobia here..)
Next, because she has opinions, she must be as asinine as Rush Limbaugh.
Now lastly, I'm a bigot.
And this is all coming from the guy with the same tired Barbie Death Camp year after year?
Geeeeez...

My last comment on this thread. Probably. I think it's an important issue. I think it's one that most people don't seem to know about. And I think it's something that should be thoroughly looked into, especially the folks outside of Uganda that are influencing this bill and others like it.
I don't, however, want to have the same boring partisan back-and-forth. If Maddow reporting this is too 'lefty' for you, then I don't know what to tell you. Do some of your own research and let us know what you find.
I wish you all a good weekend.

Well, as I read through this thread I did not find a single reference to this origins of "The Family".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fellow ... anization)
It is a fundamental Christian organization and not primarily a political one. It began in 1942 Chicago as "The Fellowship".

So by logical conclusion, according to NT, even Mr. Obama is involved with killing gays in Uganda.Although the organization is secretive, it holds one regular public event each year, the National Prayer Breakfast held in Washington, D.C. Every sitting United States president since President Dwight D. Eisenhower, up to President Barack Obama, has participated in at least one National Prayer Breakfast during his term.

It's difficult to split the "Family" issue from the bill they are passing in Uganda, as it is the "Family" that is the major proponent of the legislation. Without the "Family", chances are that this legislation never would have come to be.Deb Prothero wrote:It might be better for clear debate to split the "Family" issue from the issue of criminalizing homosexuality.

unfortunately, my dear, you are so hopelessly partisan, oblivious to the importance of questions that do not fit into your incredibly myopic worldview, and insulting to any contrary position posted to any of your threads, that i doubt you will never be able to create a decent debate around here.neon tetra wrote:I don't, however, want to have the same boring partisan back-and-forth.

NT, thanks so much for posting this. It was very enlightening. I watched all the videos and didn't see Maddow trying to enforce her views. I saw that she was just trying to get the guy to show proof of gay recruitment of children in Uganda, which he clearly couldn't. He kept throwing "for the children" in there...what a fuck-head.

Ah, geez, Neon... Not again!!
You can find just as many left wing wacko's as you can right wing wacko's, with very little searching.
Ya can't paint the GOP in this, anymore than you can paint Obama as an Islamic Extremist, because he's Muslim.....

Sodomy laws are not all that far in history of the U.S.A. In fact, there are, correct me if I'm wrong, still sodomy laws in a state or two.
Whether the GOP is involved with an organization that influences policy in a foreign land does not seem to be the thrust of the video. Is this guilt by association? So is everyone who has ever shopped at or worked for Good Will Industries also equally guilty of killings gays in Uganda? Are there no DNC members associated with The Family? I doubt that is true.

I'm always careful, but thank you for the warning. Most of this story is true. I actually WATCH an interview with that guy on Rachael Maddow. I was intrigued that she could even stay calm while interviewing him. And no matter you might think of Rachael Maddow, you can't fake a live interview.littleflower wrote:unfortunately, my dear, you are so hopelessly partisan, oblivious to the importance of questions that do not fit into your incredibly myopic worldview, and insulting to any contrary position posted to any of your threads, that i doubt you will never be able to create a decent debate around here.neon tetra wrote:I don't, however, want to have the same boring partisan back-and-forth.

And speaking of "The Family" there are several Senators/Congressmen that are actually under investigation for living there and receiving rent at well below market value. For some interesting reading http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fellow ... anization)

I believe all the Sodomy laws in the US have been overturned except "Three states have yet to repeal anti-homosexual "conduct" laws: Oklahoma, Kansas[4] and Texas."Trishntek wrote:Sodomy laws are not all that far in history of the U.S.A. All existing US sodomy laws (which technically applied to gays & straights in many cases, though they were only used against gays) were invalidated by the Supreme Court in 2003: Lawrence v. Texas. Some states haven't repealed their laws but they're invalidated just the same.Trishntek wrote:Sodomy laws are not all that far in history of the U.S.A. There are- Bart Stupak (D-MI) is the best known. Extremely anti-abortion, extremely conservative christian. His term ends with this session of congress. Are there no DNC members associated with The Family? I doubt that is true.
The Fellowship is an extremist christian organization and has members on both sides of the aisle, however it has far more Republicans than Democrats because of simple numbers- Republican legislators trend towards the conservative Christian side of the equation (not all are this extreme, and unlike a lot of people I don't see having religious values on its own as a problem).
The Ugandan legislator who has proposed the bill has acknowledged "the Fellowship's" involvement in it, but to say that connects the entire GOP to it is ridiculous at best.
The bill no longer call for death, "just" life imprisonment. Oh, if you know someone gay & don't report them you get to go to jail for up to 3 years. All for the children, of course.
