Hello burners greetings from the midwest!!!!
I and several of my friends are planning on attending the festival this year. I have been there before an am bringing several playa virgins. We are looking for a theme camp to join and participate with....any suggestions or contact info you can send our way would be greatly appreciated.

If I may respectfully suggest that for starters, in your profile tell us something about yourself. You might want to add a post telling those of us who run themecamps why you and your newbies would make a good addition. Some additions are subtractions, for example: If you like playing dubstep and psytrance until 6 in the morning, certain camps would not want you as a member (Hushville, Barbie Death Camp, and Eden come to mind); you might want a camp that caters to gays/lesbians or one that is predominantly heterosexual; some camps you must be 21 or older to be part of because of alcohol; some camps are 4:20 friendly, others are not. And so on. So now, little Grasshopper, tell us about yourself.

WHAT! BDC&WB is not into dubstep and psytrance? I'm shocked, I tell you, shocked!Dr. Pyro wrote: If you like playing dubstep and psytrance until 6 in the morning, certain camps would not want you as a member (Hushville, Barbie Death Camp, and Eden come to mind)
Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.

Hey there, one of my locals pointed this thread out to me in effort to get more of us in Northern Ohio connected!
Anyone here from the Akron, Cleveland area should also check out Recycled Rainbow (near Canton, OH), entering its 5th year as an outdoor event.
http://www.recycledrainbow.org
Also, if you're going to Burning Man in 2011 a bunch of us are looking for rideshare options, camping options.... anything to reduce the travel cost, feel free to hit me up -- [email protected]
Would love to meet more of you!

So in typical segmented Ohio burner fashion your only going to radically include persons in NE Ohio to participate?everyman wrote:Hey there, one of my locals pointed this thread out to me in effort to get more of us in Northern Ohio connected!

I have a little bit of Savannah with me. Shhh...
Of course not! Quite the contrary, in fact the person who tipped me off to this thread was a SOUTHERN ohio burner who was trying to help these guys get connected to some friendly locals. The RR organizers actually assist with another burn that takes place in southern ohio (the link to it was in my signature to my earlier post) but more on that later.C187 wrote:So in typical segmented Ohio burner fashion your only going to radically include persons in NE Ohio to participate?
I apologize if I came off the wrong way but I was writing quickly and very excited about the chance to help out some local burners!
I mentioned northern ohio areas because someone FROM northern ohio started this thread about going to Burning Man with newbies and looking for somewhere or someone to camp with (I figured getting in touch with our local event participants and organizers would be beneficial to their cause, maybe we could camp together, rideshare, etc, and if these newbies attend any of the local burns, it will be a great learning opportunity for them!) but really anyone in Ohio and our neighboring states looking for a burn is encouraged to check out RR. We're pretty new, as a lot of the burns in this region are. I was just targeting the person who started this thread and his newbie friends, letting them know we have a local burn and other local burners available to them as resources.
While we are indeed trying to grow our local community, participants who attend RR come from all over Ohio and nearby states, including Columbus, Cincy, Athens, Louisville, Indianapolis, even from Delaware and North Carolina. It's a small burn, it's closer to Canton than any major city in Ohio, but its organizers are mostly from Cleveland (though our head medic is from Kentucky.)
There is a southern ohio burn called Scorched Nuts which many of us northern burners are intimately involved with organizing this year. They started the same time we did, and we've been involved with them since the beginning!
SN 2011 is in June (a couple weeks before Lakes of Fire), RR 2011 is in late September. Lots of crossover from both events as far as participants and organizers go. Still, both events are relatively new and looking to grow so I thought I'd give everyone a headsup! WickedLester, you might want these burner virgins to check out these local burns (if they can make it to any of them) before they attend the big dance in the desert, to get their feet wet, so to speak, and meet other burners who they may end up wanting to camp with. Who knows?
Speaking of Lakes of Fire in SW Michigan, some linkage for those unfamiliar:
http://www.lakesoffire.org/ (great group of people organizing this one, Cooky (the Detroit burning man RC) is one of the most inspirational people I've ever met in my life.
You guys might also want to check out Reclamation (formerly called Hillbilly Burn) which takes place in Kentucky starting May 13th.
Here is a post all about it:
http://tribes.tribe.net/alchemyfestival ... 95b54ad810
Links to both RR and SN are in my sig.
Many opportunities to meet up with locals all over the region to assist your burner virgins in getting acquainted with the 10 principles such as radical self-reliance (what? NO TRASH CANS? No vending machines??) Might not be a bad idea to pass this information along to them, and I'd definitely like to meet up with you sometime! Give me a write when you have a chance.
Peace!

1a) We can take an educated guess that the OP is at least a member of one of the three Ohio RC email lists. More likely then not the one your behind. If we were to assume activity on that list then the OP would know of you and others localized to the NE area. Thus the OP would simply need to read posting from that list about local gatherings to help plan, and even ride share with locals.everyman wrote:Of course not! 1b) In regards to the southern Ohio burner, which group dose that person belong to? The group in Cincinnati or the Athens group? (Going off of the RC list.)
2) How does RR or SN have anything to do with anything? But since you brought it up, does this mean the Cleveland biased RR burner group only works with one of the two southern Ohio groups? Where does that leave the NW, and MC Ohio burners in Toledo, Bowling Green, Lima, and so on down 75 till Dayton?everyman wrote:The RR organizers actually assist with another burn that takes place in southern ohio (the link to it was in my signature to my earlier post) but more on that later.
See 1a, and the first line from 2.everyman wrote:I mentioned northern ohio areas because someone FROM northern ohio started this thread about going to Burning Man with newbies and looking for somewhere or someone to camp with (I figured getting in touch with our local event participants and organizers would be beneficial to their cause, maybe we could camp together, rideshare, etc, and if these newbies attend any of the local burns, it will be a great learning opportunity for them!) but really anyone in Ohio and our neighboring states looking for a burn is encouraged to check out RR.
That's a flat out LIE and you know it. I have emails from the NE Ohio list sent out by you dating back to 2008 on my current email account. If I could remember my password to my last email account, I'm sure I'd find older ones. Your RC group is not new by any means.everyman wrote:We're pretty new, as a lot of the burns in this region are.
Look, I do appreciate that you are attempting to reach out to people who are geographically close to you in order to help them out. It's what any burner would do after all. But what I was starting to address in my original posting was the septicemic problem with the state's over all culture of division and anti-inclusion.everyman wrote:I was just targeting the person who started this thread and his newbie friends, letting them know we have a local burn and other local burners available to them as resources.

1a) As they say, assuming makes an ass of u and me. I am offering this information just in case, only trying to help.
1b) she's from Cincy but I didn't think that was important to point out. It was a connection from the other side of Ohio (not in Northern Ohio) trying to help us out, as we try to do the same for them. We are a lot more integrated than you're implying. I understand why you feel the way you do. It's often said there are 5 Ohios. :)
2) I already explained why I was bringing up RR and SN (and LoF and Reclamation.) I was offering them up as learning opportunities for newbie burners that perhaps the original poster wasn't aware of. They are resources of information and experience that one can have prior to going to Burning Man, and may help enhance the experience for a first time burner. I have also pointed out we have members from all over the state and neighboring states involved in our organizations. Clearly it is not the case that we only work with one of the two southern Ohio groups, I help organize our events with people from Columbus, Athens, Cincy, and recently we've been making contacts in Dayton. I also used to work a lot with Randy Ruge from Toledo, OH before he stepped down. Is there room for improvement? Clearly yes, that's always the case, and I can only do so much by myself. Always trying to improve and reach out.
RR and SN have both only been around since 2007, which I personally consider very new given the ages of Transformus and Flipside, PDF, or Burning Man itself. Reclamation is only a couple years old, so is Lakes of Fire. We aren't in our first year out, no, I never claimed that... but we are still very much in a young learning and growing stage and by no means an old staple of Ohio burner culture. This point of whether we are new versus "brand new" is not really important, I was just pointing out we haven't been around for a very long time, I'm guessing there is not a lot of awareness of our existence. I'm offering this information to newbie burners and veterans alike, as many "first-time burners" show up to our events before going to burning man, so they're likely to meet others like them. These burner communities in Ohio FEEL extremely new to me, and it's exciting that we're all building this together and creating the BM experience for those who cannot afford to go to the playa or can't get the time off each year.
I agree with you that all burners should be trying to help each other out and connect. I do understand your issue with the state's culture of division, and I'm sorry if I apparently added to that with my original comments. I feel as though I'm upsetting you and at this point, this discussion is probably detracting from the poster's original intent.
I do appreciate your pointing out what you did, and I'll do whatever I can to ensure there is more "working together" within the state (and neighboring states) versus working separately. It's a stigma in Ohio I'm familiar with, and it's one many of us have been working to change, and I assure you all the RC's in Ohio are working closely together.
Peace!
