The appeal of XXX to the ignorant, orphaned and desperate make it a gate way for a cult-like following.
Choose XXX from the following set: Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Atheism, Zoroastrianism, Paganism, Shintoism, Buddhism, Satanism, Scientology, Communism, Capitalism, Ayn Randism, Supply Side Economics, Conspiracy Theories, Video Games, Reality Shows, Astrology, Numerology, Alcoholism, NASCAR, Drugs, Fast Food, and Larry Harveyism.

Or make up your own for more fun! How to unmake friends and influence people!

If I have failed to offend someone with the above list it was not for lack of trying.

So, you're saying that Larry Harvey appeals to the ignorant and desperate. I think that you've over-generalized just a wee bit.

Who here actually knows a follower of Islam? Maybe even more than one?

<Raises hand>

(in the interest of full disclosure, I think all religion is silly)

I have worked with a large number, even been roommates with a couple. I have yet to meet any that were the great evil that so many people in the US are making them out to be. In my experience, they are just normal people.

I have noticed a generalization here (the US), to refer to anyone with brown skin & middle eastern dress as "a muslim". This, to me, is like calling anyone that is caucasian "christian". White folks we refer to by nationality, French, British, American. We even nationalize our immigrants. But the middle east becomes "muslim". Similar to the far east as well, in being "asian" rather than from a country.

I have met Moroccans, French, Iraqis, Pakistanis, Indians, Chinese, Canadians, Californians, all of whom varied in their devotion to Islam. Just like any other religion out there, some are devout, others are slackers.

I know and have known Muslims, Christians, Jews, Pagans, Hare Krsnas, Buddhists, Satanists and Wiccans. The one thing they have in common is they all believe in some supernatural, hidden, unprovable being/energy/force/deity for which they can provide no evidence and insist their delusion is just obviously true since it's shared by so many others.
(Note: I know Buddhism is a non-theistic, and basically atheist, religious view but they still believe in all that Karmic jazz, souls and the afterlife.)

I have to quite agree, and ultimately dangerous as well.

Shambala is correct IMO. Islam turned it's back on education several centuries ago. Islam and intelligence are less compatible than intelligence and most other religions. Intelligence shows that cooperation is a better strategy than unbridled competition. Spewing Intolerance is an invitation to have some other group drop a load of intolerance on YOU.

Islam comes from the Middle East. You know, the place where algebra, the number system we use (indo-arabic numerals vs. roman numerals), number theory, decimals, early geometry & calculus, were invented. Most math that the average person knows originated or filtered through the middle east. There is an entire era of mathematics known as Islamic/Arabic Mathematics.

So to say
Islam and intelligence are less compatible than intelligence and most other religions.
is I think a statement that is demonstrably provable as untrue.

Religion took over. Intelligence and religion are diametrically opposed. Belief is ..or should be, personal. Cultures live or die on their ability to grasp intelligence.

the same thing that happened to christianity and all other myths.

they get hijacked by the Fundegelicals.(tm)

those who are so fervent they would kill for their beliefs or at least lie to their congregation or flock to maintain the status quo.

those who would use wisdom, regardless of what language or culture it's couched in to do stupid, vile acts and say hateful derogatory things, all in the name of "The Lord", or whatever name their particular imaginary friend may go by.

fools at best, hate mongers and murderers, usually.

so, the answer Ygmir is not what happened to them, But what happened to Us?

how did the sane voice of reason and moderation get drowned out by the Opulent Temple Religious Jack-Boot Dubstep?

oh wait, i'm mixing metaphors, i'm sorry...i digress.

the problem lays not with the religion, but with the religious followers and their subjective interpretations.

is there a "religious left"?

yeah, Simon, et al, I see what you're saying.

I just wonder, how the societies, that created all that was noted, has mostly devolved, into a pretty barbaric place.........

and, I agree, religion is what did it.

well, maybe "mono-thiestic" religion.........

I'm poly, myself........most of us Pagans are.
I wonder, if it would be different, had not "men" invented the whole mono-theism thing, and stuck with the natural "Pagan if you will" ways........

to all the people religion-bashing: don't forget that a religion is just a framework to try to understand this great and insane world we live in. don't forget that science and logic and even atheism are the same thing; a framework to try to make make sense of this whirlwind. you learn rules and stories, you apply them to your life, and you try to do what you believe in.

any religion, as has been stated, has way too many crazy fundamentalists with closed minds. including atheism, logic, and science. what priest wants to hear of a science that debunks his god? what scientist wants to hear of a god that breaks the status quo of "the way things really work"? nobody listens to anybody, which is really sad.

from a social perspective, i have quite a few muslim friends. (and christian friends, and jewish friends, etc, etc...) they are by far the nicest, most respectful, and most genuine of any religious friends i have. i am often mistaken for a person of the muslim faith as i wear hijab for other reasons, but really, if i'm going to be assumed to be something, i'm okay with that. i often use islamic and arabic greetings when meeting strangers because it's just easier than trying to explain otherwise.

i've bitten my tongue and lurked on this thread since it started. at first i thought it was some sort of a joke. decided i just have to throw my $0.02 in... let's see who's going to tear it apart first... ;)

Sorry doll, religion & science are not the same thing.

Science is always open to new information, religion is not. They are complete opposites.

science is open to new information if it fits in to the parameters of what it is used to. science is amazing, it is the current paradigm, and it is taking us SO far. but it is not all there is.

@ Ygmir..yes there are religious left!...they stay silent...my favorite kind!

@ daratheresa..I will bash organized religion till the day I die. Like I suggested, Ive nothing against personal beliefs. I have a problem, when they become soo loud its hard to think...even Atheists!

Civilized communities dont need a structured religion..look at Burning Man.

To the OP...Islam is becoming annoying..just like christianity. Just shut the fuck up! and believe in whatever god you choose!
