Hello from Little Tart in Sacramento

Post by LittleTart » Sun Dec 26, 2010 9:52 pm

Hello, I will be a first time 'burner this fall, but I am really looking forward to participating. I am reading and researching and getting ready. Any advice? Also, any opinions on how to camp? My partner wants to rent an RV, but I would like to tent camp - any pros and cons (aside from price?).

As I get to know the boards I hope to get to know people and start building for Labor Day.

Cheers!

Yes, welcome! Many of your questions are answered by scouring the ePlaya threads looking for others opinions on the various ways to camp.

I will be a virgin this burn also, as will several other ePlayans. I have learned a ton from this forum and also by meeting other burners in my area and talking about BM experiences.

There are advantages and disadvantages to tenting or hard sided camping in both the practical sense as well as the social and aesthetic senses. Check out the forums and start reading as much as you can.

Welcome LittleTart :D As JStep said, the forum's hold a wealth of information (actual/opinion (and the very least, entertaining :D) I have always tent camped so can only have opinion/experience thereof~
PRO: Feel uber-connected with your environment (can hear the small sounds/feel the vibration through the ground from large scale sound camps. Cost is cheap, even getting the biggest family tent is a fraction of cost of renting RV. Plus won't worry so much about getting it back in 'pristine' condition ;))
CON:Dust, dust, and more d u s t :) Dust everywhere including you. But alas, if you do want the total & emersive feel, it's the only way to go in my op.

Two years, two different tents, I've never had a problem with dust that so many groan about. Take your shoes off when you get inside. Zip it up. The end.

Con to RV: real burners would never be so tacky. RVs are for tourists.

We've tented for ten years and have not had a dust issue once we figured out the basic tricks.

Welcome! tent vs rv is a major topic on here. This will be my first burn and we have decided to bring a very old beat up travel trailer. Almost counts as a tent, but it has a potty and if i get too many hot flashes, an ac.

the search feature on here is cranky, but just about everything you could possibly want to know can be found.

Tent verses RV. I have done 5 burns, 2 in a tent and 3 in a small travel trailer. I actually spend very little time in the trailer. I set up a reasonalble sized shade structure for my small theme camp and spend most of the day and evening there. If you tent it, just be sure you have some shaded area and that you are set up for the wind!

Hi LittleTart

Welcome to eplaya!

Another shelter alternative is the hexayurt. Fun to build, very functional in the playa environment...

Not for "everyone" I suppose, but worth a look even if just to learn of such things if perhaps you are unfamiliar with them. It worked beautifully for me. Threads in the Tips Q&A section.

You'll find plenty of help here no matter what solution you decide upon!

Hello Little Tart:

This is my first year too. We are taking a 30 Ft trailer that sleeps 6 and we have room for 4 more burners. If you are interested, a couple other newbies and I are meeting some veteran burners at the Valencia Club in Penryn on Friday at 5pm to get the scoop and brainstorm.
Life's too short for questions, in the end we are all dust on the Playa. Live,, Breathe,, and Share!

Epochalfrog, we currently have at least six of us going to the Valencia Club. We need more people! C'mon you Sacramento-Placer County newbies (and oldies) get with the program and let's toast to TTITD 2011.
