Noise Camps / Esplanade is the window dressing to get them in the room.

often as stated above a 'Playaversion" takes place and the "raver" evolves into a new being, is transformed, and makes his/her way thru the dust to call BRC Home for many more reasons than the love of ooontzOOOntzOOOOOntz.

i've seen this awakening occur before.

come for oooontz, stay for the art, culture and community.

is this so bad?

perhaps it will be an Enlightened SparklePony(tm) who will guide our city in the future.

No I think it's an excellent thing. Every virgin arrives confused and with misconceptions about something on the playa. We can measure how well our culture is functioning by how well we are able to inoculate them with our values and morals.

My first burn was a regional. I had been to other festivals (mostly pagan ones) and figured this was going to be exactly the same. I was lost within minutes of arriving. What do you mean I can't camp wherever I want?

the first year i went was helco, and that night i was altered chemically and could not find my camp to save my life.

at first nervous, then terrified, then........then it happened, i realized it really didn't matter, why worry?

the feeling of lightness was almost unbearable, to paraphrase Kundera, and the moment is forever locked in my mind.

why worry? what good is it doing? is it helping me in my life, or task at hand or relationship or anything for that matter?

no.

enjoy the moment, every moment, this moment, that moment, it gives a sudden urgency to life that is lacking i'm afraid in too many people.

Relax, Be who you are, Go out of your comfort zone but be comfortable in your own skin.

these notions were all foreign to me, that is not how i was brought up.

here comes the pitch...

i did change my life. How can anything this profound not?

now i sound like some fucking hippy, but dammit, i fell in love with the dust, and have been fiercely loyal to it ever since.

it is from whence i came and to it i will return, year after year until i can no longer.

even then i will return, eventually.

Also is there a term for the Swag that you get that basically becomes instant moop. You know, the bad gifts. For example I had a kid try to give me about 40 carnival tickets (the ones you get from the games to redeem for stuffed animals) or during the burn found another kid passing out cheap 3d glasses from a stack of about 500 he had.

Ok, I will try to loosely define both. Will need some serious wordsmithing or maybe the original source.

Trustafarian: The Trustafarian is any individual who professes to have found a new way to exist outside of the norm. These individuals usually profess a fondness for popular alternative religeons (generally Rastafarian or Buddhism) but however do not understand the religeon beyond the context of the music they listen to. Trustafarians finance all actions through trust funds established by family members, or through illicit drug sales. In the wild Trustafarians are most often heard preaching during the temple burn vague statements akin to "Its time to shine", "The Universe will guide your soul" and "Trust your third eye"

Raccoon (Sub species of the sparkle pony): The Raccoon is a group animal. They always travel in groups of 3 or more. When a raccoon is hungry they find an open meal and send the smallest most attractive raccoon to investigate the food. If the small raccoon is successfully fed, they will return to the other raccoons. At which point all raccoons will slowly recover as much food as they can. When discovered the raccoons generally scurry quickly into the darkness (Raccoons are generally darktards, which makes there detection especially challenging). Raccoons will repeat this pattern with any urge, particularily dancing, drug use and procreation.

50,000 unwashed freaks in the desert for a week, driving mutant vehicles, sharing everything in a gift economy and dancing for hours on end to oontz oontz music while many are in states of questionable sobriety? You might think everyone at Burning Man is a hippie; you might argue that Burn culture is a descendent of the counterculture that came to prominence during the 1960s, but has roots which go back much further.

If you did make these arguments, youâ€™d probably be right. But while some hippies embrace the term, for others itâ€™s used with (playful?) disdain. You might be a hippie, but weâ€™re serious artists, musicians, Burners, etc (see also: Burnier-than-thou).
