First time 2011
I have wanted to attend BM for years.
Life is a Great Adventure and BM ePlaya, definitely
celebrates the diversity and challenge of the Journey.
I have traveled extensively, but usually solo or in
with a small group. The thought of being in a raw, primitive/techno, free-wheeling, environment with 10's of thousands of people, all living very diverse life styles and behaviors, for days on end, is very exciting and ominous to
me at the same time.
Still, I have made the commitment to go, I feel drawn to attend,
I will be there 2011.
I have read many posts on the forum. I want to be prepared, but I do not want, to be so prepared, that I am not on the edge of the experience.
Preparation though, sounds like the path to a rewarding
BM adventure.

The most recent survival guide is here, although you may have already seen it:

If you're well-prepared, remove expectations, and are ready to batten down the hatches and go dancing in a white-out with yer goggles on, you'll be fine. You need not feel ominous at all. (Though before your first time, it's pretty normal.)

Edge of experience? It's different for everyone...no matter what the endeavor or situation.
At BM I've seen it all from someone sitting on the playa naked surrounded by water bottles with a big bag of granola, to folks showing up in rock star-sized motor homes. My recommendation is to pick something somewhere between those extremes.

Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.

Thank you for guidance. That leaves all options
open.
Somewhere in the middle of the extremes
would be a good way to go, for me.
Maybe 40 years ago I would be sitting in desert,
buck naked, legs crossed, chanting to the sun.
But now, I will definitly sit on a pillow of some sort, while I
sit buck naked, legs crossed, chanting to the sun.
lol
Thank you for the greeting and words of guidance.

Hiya & welcome!
The eplaya Q & A and share resources threads, those are good.
some of this below stuff may be redundant but took me a while to dig up (and some I discovered at TTITD from veterans last year)
If you've traveled, and camped, you'll figure out how to deal with the dust...it does leave a fine film on even the "finest" humans...as far as I could tell...everyone gets used to it. I suppose some in RV's, who constantly rinse and such, avoid a lot of it but, eh, it's nothing (have masks/scarves for breathing filtration)....I do strongly suggest some sort of shower...it is a vacation after all and a shower set up with Dr Bron*ers peppermint soap is schweet & refreshing. Cold at midday was fine by me sometimes, if hot out.
Also, a spray bottle of 50/50 white vinegar and water for spraying the feet, is the easiest way to avoid "playa foot" and follow w/lotion if you have the energy. Do bring ear plugs, I hate them but didn't for grabbing rest at all hours...sorta like closing a window in a NYCity dwelling, LOL, dulls the hum.
I dried the living sh*t outta my hands on the last day, forgot to wear gloves for breakdown, duh, the cure...latex gloves with a tiny bit of petroleum jelly rubbed onto my hands...still, it took a couple/few weeks for them to heal.
junglesmacks; he has a bunch of very practical/pragmatic threads imho...haha, he won't mind if you stalk his profile...also, I am guessing those and many other prep threads getted bumped closer to the festival.
The ART is ominous! the people kind, the desert beautiful, the city impressive, the world's greatest party, with traditions, all the while on the cutting edge of the next best discoveries...I missed about 1/4 million+ other things...but you get the idea...
eplaya is a living, breathing, talking book...I know you & everyone will get volumes more out of burning man, by reading up, especially to this talking book..oh and you can meet n greet eplayans too...(search: meet greet)

Thank you MoonRise for the warm welcome
and words of guidance.
I have had challenges with dry feet in the past, I will
follow your well received advice.
The latex gloves, dust mask', Dr Bronner's peppermint 18-in-1 Pure Castile Soap, (flash back to my VW Van and the 60's), ear plugs (playing The Sound Of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel).
I am looking forward to BM 2011, and appreciate the guidance.

go into your profile and uncheck your BBCode box, might wanna do the smilies and HTML boxes also. The TOP three boxes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
foam ear plugs, for construction noise...they dull the noise...art cars drive by, sometimes at all hours blasting music, well worth the few bucks
head phones for music, those are different, I didn't bring those but sure if you want to, bring them (kinda just one more thing to have to clean later, might never clean up, if foam jobs)
center camp has live music sometimes (other places too but finding them can be a hunt)
Kinetic, he has a list of highly recommended "to do's" somewhere...center camp is one of them...I don't recall where the thread with that list(s) is.
Maybe another introduction?
Also, google n order lots of blinkies for night, pin types for your nighttime hat, jacket, etc, are low cost and easy, (glow stix, meh) set blinkies on "flash mode" they might last alllll week for ya...imho, changing tiny batteries sucks!
Sunrises at the orange trash fence, those were eventful too! 1-2000+ people stretched out along the long East fence, all sorts of interesting costumed peeps....
~Sun Gazing, I saw a woman doing that, I know what it is...I did it with her for a few minutes, I didn't even know the woman, we did it right there on the ground.........................................(it's not what you think)
Warriors use it to "fast" and all that, but sheesh, we had food back at camp, sun*chips, ya know? haha, I do sun gazing for the Vit D...honestly, I'm not trying be a smart ass! Sun Gazing = Free Vit D
google "sun gazing" maybe add in "upscale hippie" actually it's fun to stare into the sun!..........................(do NOT do that!!!!)
I only typed it for a ryhming bit o humor, haha...and to give you a moonrise tattoo for your intro thread...heh heh..I hope you'll laugh years from now
(if you don't go blind from staring into the sun!)
PS This is looking like a triple entry BUT...I wanted to add some of what my real experiences were...I chose burning man over a low budget trip to Hawaii, those Islands are always gonna be there 24/7, 365...this is short, sweet and intense...imho, arrive on time!! and if you can, stay extra days for strike and MOOPing...the extra days, mon/tues are a free treat! things were still going on...heh heh (I left at the crack of DAWN weds!)
I would like to share a Life changing experience I had in the past few days.
A dear friend of mine died. He and His family, have been a
important part of my life for decades.
He was a kind, generous, hard working, loving person, who filled his days with doing', for others and always with a smile and humor.
He was there when those he knew or encountered were in need or not, and always, Always with that great big smile of his.
He did all the chores of daily life, from the house hold chores, cleaning, home repairs, shopping for food, a shuttle bus', for the kids and providing for a home and all the many, many needs of his family, from A-Z, from material needs, education, and health.
I have dozens of memories of our Multiple-Family's, (20 Family's) gathering to together to do river trips, celebrations of all kinds and all of our and his many, many adventures.
He was also, Always there to nurture and provide guidance and support for the 'kids' even after they were adults, and he did the same for others that would ask for his help, and for the many, many people that he had just met. He Never refused. He nurtured All of us, We were All his 'Kids'.
The service, was uplifting, filled with a colorful recap of his 'Lifes Adventure'. There were many moments of laughter, and tears of joy, and smiles.
People from all walks of Life attended, and at the reception, the room was filled with laughter and joyful reunions of 'old faces' and of 'new meetings' of people, that had All shared the common thread of knowing this wonderful man and his Family.
We All stayed for many hours, over 300 of us that were Bonded together for one reason, that of our common experience of knowing this one Man.
I wanted to share these feelings and thoughts, to express my gratitude for the warm welcomes, and for the guidance that I have experienced here on this thread.
I made the commitment to attend Burning Man (before his death), because, Burning Man', represents to me, a great gathering of souls, from all walks of Life, that meet in a challenging, vast space, to create, to express, to laugh and to share this incredible Journey (and Gift) of Life.
After attending the 'Memorial Service' of my friend, I am even more enthusiastic and commented to attend Burning Man 2011.
Life is a Great Gift, so like my Dear friend did Let's Share, Create, Laugh and Cry, Let's Celebrate Lifes adventure.
To 'Burning man' 2011 , Let's LIVE an GIVE 'Til WE Drop'.
The tickets go on sale soon, Jan. 19th! Get yer tickets, join the fun...
I suggest you also read other intro threads, these have a lot of great information in them.
~Every person's situation is different, if you need help, ask and everyone will give you helpful answers, ideas, thoughts, suggestions and solutions.
Eplaya fitness club, hehe, this is one of my hang outs, I'm headed there now to check in, there are also "da bars", those can be fun if you need a drink!
