newport beach

Post by tamarakay » Mon Dec 27, 2010 10:30 am

Going on a company trip (training class) to newport beach in January. Any tips on what to see (besides the beach)? Never been there and don't know anyone from there.

Newport, Oregon is very nice.

I used to go there every summer when I was a kid. The pier is fun if you like fishing, which my grandpa did. There are lots of cool shops along the beach...well behind the beach parking lot. If you like really good steakhouses, The Northwoods Inn is the Best! With the Best cheese bread ever! I think there is one in San Gabriel, one in LaMirada and one in Covina, which arent that close to Newport Beach, but worth the drive.

Go to Balboa Island! It's a quaint little island with shops and places to eat! You can take a ferry over depending where in NP beach you are. On the Balboa peninsula there are lots of shops and eateries. I lived in Costa Mesa /Newport Beach for 20 years. If you go north on PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) you can go to Huntington Beach. The pier is awesome! So is Newport pier for that matter. Fashion Island is a great shopping or window shopping experience. Go South on PCH and about 15 or so miles you'll be in Laguna Beach. A very artsy town!

And Disneyland is about a half hour-45 minute drive all the way up Harbor Blvd! Or take a day trip to Catalina Island!

Our folks would take us to Newport Dunes, a bay of sorts away from the ocean. There used to be, back in the day, two floating piers and two artificial whales.

No offense takin there Tom.
Do you know of Newport Dunes? I haven't been there in like 30+ years. I don't know if those whales are still there.
Like maryanimal mentioned, Huntington Beach was my lair in the late 70s, and Seal Beach

tamarakay, when you're in Newport Beach, go the the Spaghetti Bender on PCH. They have thee best Italian food! They make this house salad dressing that is to die for! Here's the link:

Or my all time favorite Charlie's Chili by the Newport Pier. I went to that place a million times and the food rocks. Cheap fantastic eats and healthy portions! I'm drooling just thinking about it.

Then there's my favorite seafood spot. The Crab Cooker. The best Manhattan clam chowder with homemade crackers/croutons. They use disposable dinnerware! It's a cool little place to go! All the food is yummy!

I live in Costa Mesa (sister city next door) and work in Newport Beach every day.

What specifically are you looking for? Food? Nightlife? Shopping?

Let me know and I'll help you out.

lol, if my grandbabies didn't live in texas i'd be very tempted to be a californian. i've been drawn kicking and screaming into admin hell. I'll be attending a citrix zen-app admin class. It will be fun to learn something, but i'd rather be teaching than admining. getting stuck in a cubicle clicking on things just sounds like so much agony. but we do what we must to eat, no?
