Sundial Tower Project

Hey everybody!

We have a 45 foot tall tower / viewing deck / sundial art structure planned for next year.

We'll need volunteers in the bay area once this gets funding.

That's fuckin' cool! You might want to up the weight limit.

yup, thanks. The project is in the middle of stress analysis right now and the weight limit is subject to change. We are factoring in what it would weigh to have the deck crammed full of people and possibly speakers / sound equipment with a sizable safety factor.

Sundials rock. I have been wearing this watch for a few years now and I love it. It shows the exact time once you get used to dealing with the direction of the sun, and your ability to stay perfectly still while telling the time. It's true solar, and I never have to change the batteries---EVER! At night and out of the sun, I just ask passersby if they know "what time it is"!

Will it be tall enough that we could watch the minutes "tick" by, perhaps on smaller indicators between the hourly artwork marks?

Sail area would be your biggest concern to start. From your pics this looks very small in cross section - so theres not much area to collect the wind.

Your model looks pretty burly as well.

That's such a cool idea! Sun dials fascinate me. I'm in Chicago so I wouldn't be able to help before BM, but I can't wait to see it! It's going to be epic, I'm sure.
