i suggest that anyone who confuses disney or any other theme park with brc read carl hiaasen's "team rodent: how disney devours the world".

a quote: "disney is so good at being good that it manifests an evil so uniformly efficient and courteous, so dependably clean and conscientious, so unfailingly entertaining that it's unreal, and therefore is an agent of pure wickedness...disney isn't in the business of exploiting nature so much as striving to improve upon it, constantly fine tuning god's work."

i defy anyone to compare burning man to disney.

Like Larry and his 4 phases?
Take over with regionals (while taking credit) and infiltrate government with people talking about fairies and an identity that no-one can define because they feel they are the only one's that know it?

it is six flags over black rock. C'mon it is an amusement park for grown-up misfits, pyros, and freak artists. And I love six flags. Just don't think any of the rides or art cars would pass the safety requirement.

There are those that fall into the burner cultist mindset of BMORG speak, partiers, misfits that don't fit nicely into society, people that think it's a camping trip.

Yes, your experience is what you bring to it, but as you start getting catered to, your experience is diluted. I've had 4 epiphany years, 1 shitty year, and this was my best. No more epiphanies, just acknowledgements. Community is outside the playa. The playa community is a show just like a political convention. Show, shock, belittle those that disagree, sit outside begging for money for a ticket since your ass doesn't cater to the man, build the biggest pyro art, or try to sneak in.

And that's different from.....

better stop. can't tell if I'm making sense anymore.

Bye

Holy Crap! I have just sat here for I don't know how long, and have read all 13 pages of posts! Man, I need a drink now!

BTW: Thank you jaywalker (?) for noticing 'fist burner' - that cracked me up when I read it! Kind of like "Bunring Man'! LOL!

Seems to me Bunring Man and Fist Burner should be a couple! : )

was this my brother bruce's absinthe progression party? Wound it's way by elfenland with daniel's karaoke cart? Maybe I met you and never knew it.
Yeah, elfenland was much welcoming and good spirit and they invited us to this party, which was also full of good spirit. Maybe you saw a fellow in a wedding dress, surrounded by elfs, towing a karaoke cart singing Bowie's "Young Americans"? Damm that song was a lot more complicated then I realized.

The absinthe was a fun novelty, but two hours later I was dealing with the savage wind storm that blew up and made me rip the dress.

It would be fun to have my brother there.

And I'd like to think that if we HAD met, we would both know it, just not as eplayans. Early in the week I got tired of introducing myself as blyslv and just went with my xtian name Brian.

Right-on, Starboy. Contact Chai Guy. He gives away gallons of free iced chai mere paces from centercamp. BMorg has no issue with it either. Why? Because descent is good, patriotic, burn-friendly and sexy.

3 liters is what i carried on my back and i was refiling it 2-3 times a day.

I see no reason giving you water (allthough i'd give you a beer or an alcoholic drink) because you didn't carry enough on you. (unless you will be willing to sign an IOU on the ammount of water you've taken, be spanked and go through an extremly long process of humiliation at the end of which you'l get the water and we will be friends)

no, but if you'd like a graphic description of a tatoo depicting minnie polishing mickey's knob, please check out carl hiaasen's " native tongue ".
it's a novel, but it's an excellent, wickedly funny indictment of theme parks, developers and a rainbow assortment of fuckwits.

Me and Center Cafe.

Let's start that i have nothing agains Center Camp En large. BRCPO are excelent (did a couple of post runs as a delivery boy, next year hope to be promoted so PedEx sexogrammer) Recycle camp and Bike repair as well as some necesary org stuff (like Media Mecca or the Artery) also Zane's stop and the Jazz dome were cool.

Center Cafe, I admit that one night coming back to my camp, freezing my ass off (and i was dressed pretty well) i stoped for something hot to drink, don't remember what it was, didn't plan it it just happened (oh i had the money cause I wanted to make an Ice run that noon and it never materialized) sat for some time on the labyrinth, there were very few people around, finaly i managed to talk myself into getting up and going home to sleep.
didn't buy anything else there. did i need it? no, was it nice? yes, could i live without it? yes. I'd rather see the cafe closed next year.

Now the whole shade structure does serve some communal purpouse, i did find myself there one day, when i was feeling quite alone just puting a sign that said "I'm shy, talk to me please" and had several conversations with people. (as well as an undercover cop trying to find out where he could get some E). I probably could have done it elsewhere as well.

Oh and i do have a rant. why won't they allow DJ's to play there? if we do get something centralized going they might as well open it to all types of music, i'm tempted to bring a couple of grooveboxes (roland MC505) there next year state i'm a live musician and give a techno live set (a groovebox is actually a musical instrument so i wouldn't be lying about this being live music).
Shit, where was i for the last week... ehm...

Shaman in the center

Post by theshaman » Thu Sep 11, 2003 4:35 pm

I like center camp for what it is: the chatic middle of a freakshow. Oddly enough, for some reason I sleep better in Center Camp than anywhere else. I love sleeping there.

I was a little pissed off at the new BMORG policy that made the rangers kick out all sleeping people at 4:00 am...what the fuck is that all about? A ranger told me it was by order of Larry...sounds stupid to me.

I will admit that I usually don't go near Center camp after thursday, too many tourists. They are easy to spot as they always have cameras, wristwatches and are oddly...clean

That's just because you're an odd sort of fellow

Maybe he wants to make it similar to 3rd st promenade? Got to clean up Main St before the next wave of folks come in for their purchases
too many tourists. They are easy to spot as they always have cameras, wristwatches and are oddly...clean
ok..I take offense with that statement. So, I'm a tourist just because I wash my hair and don't believe I should succumb to the playa funk, and don't remove my watch? Once people taste the joy of Zodi showers, no one has to smell primal anymore

I have to admit - I don't discriminate on the basis of costume

but when someone looks too *clean* in line for the portapotties I get suspicious

What *really* cracks me up is the effects of a couple days worth of playa on my hair. I have very straight hair that normally won't curl or stand up or anything - no matter what kind of product I put in there.

This year I took curlers - i had em in for a few hours and I had these *ludicrous* springy sproingy little curls all over my head for days.

It made me happy. Playa dust is the best hair gel ever.

And I think that dusty going-to-dreads look is really sexy. Mrow.

This is the first I heard of a 4 am kickout rule. If I had to take a guess the powers that be don't want Center Camp to become a substitute for not bringing your own camp / tent / shade structure....I mean what's to keep someone from not making Center Camp their defacto "camp" for the whole week?

Besides we all know that along with Camp Artica Center Camp is the one area commerce is allowed at BM, so it's only fitting that the good business owners want to toss the street people out and keep them out of sight. BRC does mirror the real world in many ways, this would be another example of that.

Friday, August 22? Me too. I took quick sponge baths on Tuesday and
Friday. I dumped a gallon of water over my head Wednesday. Didn't
shower till ~10 PM on Labor Day when I got home. Playa funk is good.

Now that's my type of girl, but i beat you by a day, thursday night before my flight was my last shower, on the playa i used some baby wipes one or two times and did the human carcass wash once, next shower was tuesday morning in Reno. doesn't bother me too much, and i don't sweat all that much so i don't get too funky (which could also be a bad thing if you take it out of context)

Percipitate, will you marry me??

P.S. the only time i got some weird looks from people was after i did the carcass wash, being too clean having a wristwatch and wearing workclothes probably made me look like a spectator to some...

Bummer! At least once a day for 10 days. Sometimes twice :D

Oh, it is really appreciated by folks. Can't say how many people said "How long have you been here? Damn you smell fresh" The further conversations should be in another thread. Smell good get good sex. Yep. And I'm sticking to that!

Well, there is the gray water issue, and I also did the 'wipes' thing and visited the Human Carcass Wash. So, I didn't have any complaints about smell and no problem finding sex! ; )

I normally don't wear a watch - but after twos days of sucumbing to the worst kind of playa time - 1 hour becomes 5 - I had to put one on - well a cheap one on my bike. - - - then I got to see & do things I previously missed.

my experiences...

Post by girlie » Fri Sep 12, 2003 1:55 pm

my two experiences in center camp this year...

on thursday we briefly brought the Gigsville Pie-Raid (like a parade, but we were raiding for pie) through the cafe. our enthusiasm and bullhorns did not seem to be appreciated by the more mellow crowd, but i think we made a couple folks smile. by that measure we deemed the raid a success.

saturday morning some friends were jonsin' for coffee and wanted to go buy some. i made up a huge batch of couscous surprise (the surprise is the goat cheese!) and brought it to the cafe with us. gave some out, but most folks were uninterested. we didn't stay long -- most folks in there seemed too cracked out at the time to really interact with too much. i imagine that was just timing though -- it was rather early in the morning.

in general i avoid the cafe. the commerce and the atmosphere of expectation (here we are now, entertain us!) in there makes me very uncomfortable. i always feel like i've walked out of black rock city and into the chill space of some overpriced rave any time i've ended up in there. and the idea of bmorg sponsored trash cans makes me ill.

a couple times over the years i've had folks buy me drinks from the cafe, but they never seem to taste as good as the dusty drinks we make for ourselves at camp. and they definitely never taste as sweet as the random drinks pretty much any camp will offer you when you go visiting.
