aerial fabric

Post by Lady Hawk » Fri Dec 31, 2010 3:17 pm

I was looking to build a geodesic dome and build a camp with my brothers and friends for this year, but with the size of dome I would need (at least 15' radius), it would be pretty expensive! I would need at least 1.25" emt tubing to be strong enough to hold up the aerial fabric. But there would be lots of room to have other things under the tent (which would be awesome if we found an old, used parachute to put over it.)

So... I am considering trying to build another kind of structure to hold up the fabric with. Any ideas? I am also going to try to look at some junk yards for materials (I think there are several here in Portland).

Lastly, I am curious if anyone out there already has an aerial fabric camp we could join and help out with, or if anyone would be interested in helping to put this one together. One of my brothers also performs on aerial fabric, my other brother is a DJ and is tech savvy.

First off, this board has a search function, it's not a particularly brilliant one, but you have a perfect subject to begin making friends with it. I'd search on "dome" although that might be too broad. There have got to be multiple dome threads.
I suspect that conduit is one of those infrastructure things that you don't want to cheap out on, although if you find salvage I imagine that would do.
I don't know what you mean by "aerial fabric" but if it's parachute, that's contra indicated. Parachutes are meant to catch air, and you don't want your shade to also be a sail. Shade cloth or that camouflage netting are common solutions.
I'm not really the right person for this, I've never been involved with any of this sort of stuff. I suggest that you go to the Q&A, Tips and Tricks sub-forum and poke around. Bound to find some opinions. Also, there's a tribe on tribe.net called "Shade Geeks." I don't know if it's very active anymore, but there's probably a huge amount of data there from 3 or 4 years ago, or longer.
