Although wikipedia claims suppressors work by cooling the gases below the point of combustion, and this is repeated elsewhere, I don't believe this is how the good ones function.
My understanding is that the purpose is to create efficient combustion, which is not visible.
There are many bad designs out there, but many known to work.

There are also muzzle brakes which typically enhance muzzle flash, and flash hiders typically of a cone configuration.

I used this common and very short tapco M16 style tip on a rapid fire AK last night (crank fired, slower than auto).
There was virtually no flash at all, just the odd glowing spark off one side or the other.
My 380 would be blinding in the same light.
Note that the inside diameter tapers outward from the barrel end to the tip.
This seems universal to all good designs.

This is the longer and more efficient style used on night vision AKs and on the FN FAL and the M1.
A usa reproduction is available.

The open prong style is regarded as even more effective, but is vulnerable to damage and misalignment, which reduces effectiveness.
As you might expect, proper design is crucial to all of these types.

yeah, it's a very difficult issue, and very complex.
Seems, you're either for 'em, or agin 'em, and, the only discussion is where the lines are drawn for ownership.

It's the human factor, that makes it so tough.
"rules are made to be broken", is such the attitude.

Sometimes it's hard to tell.

Personally, I don't understand why anyone would want one, but that's just me, and I'm sure I have toys that others would feel the same way about. So, who am I to judge?

I killed three different predators that were trying to kill my livestock, and one that was actually feeding on the carcass. That's why I need guns, but that is beside the point, we all need guns to protect what little is left of our natural/god-given rights. Here is the results of gun control:

All genocides have been preceded by gun control. PERIOD. Why do I own so many guns:

1) They totally rock.

2) There are many different types, just all all kinds of tools. You wouldn't use a hammer to drive a screw.

3) I live in Montana, and I have to think of my neighbor's reputations too.

4)I kill all of our meat with guns except our chickens.

5) My closest neighbor is two miles away.

6) When I was on the fire department, I was on medic standby for a supposed home invasion, and witnessed first hand the forty five minute wait for the entry team which still wasn't ready when the home owner called back and said they had left. 911 is a joke.

7)Few other things are as fun to stroke, clean, and whisper sweet nothing to.
