body paint
Morning folks! i've been browsing around looking at various body paints, any one kind work better than the others? there are a couple of brands that are far and away more expensive, so got us wondering why and is it worth it. And sorry in advance if this question is asked and answered a hundred times on here, i'm baking pumpkin bread and two cakes for mom's house tomorrow and didn't feel like fighting the search engine.

Tamara, part of our Village is Black Rock City Body & Paint. We ordered off the net some three years ago and only need to reorder for this year. If you would like, I'll check the brands we use (they're locked up with our Barbies) and let you know if the question isn't satisfactorily answered before then. But our camp will have plenty of paint, in case you're interestred. (One of the things covered by dues.)

You'll get better replies than mine, but I'm not doing anything at the moment...
Do you live near an art supply store? If so, go in and ask them. Tell them you'll be applying the paint in a very hot, dry, dusty climate.
Altho water based paints like tempura are fairly long lasting and inexpensive and easy to wash off, it tends to dry and crack in the dry climate.
Acrylic is more pliable, but it's fast drying properties make it very difficult to remove...soap and water barely dent it. You'd prolly have to use lots baby oil.
Then there's latex. Fairly expensive, but also pliable, moves with the body. I once was completely covered in latex, but cleaned up easy by stepping in a warm shower and letting the weight of the water gradually pull the "skin" away from my body. You won't have the luxury of a long shower at BM, so you'll have to peel it off...and the little bits...good luck.
Go for it a day or two, but everyday...too much hassle and time consuming for me. Get imaginative with costumes!
Happy New Year!

One side effect to think about depending on your design and where you place it - when you get back to the default world you may have some interesting tan lines. I wore a third eye on my forehead most of the week. I still had the outline for a week after. I did get some interesting second looks
You know it's going to be a bad day when you jump out of bed and miss the floor.

doc! i think kenman wants to play or "practice" before we go. he's having fun exploring this newly found creative side of himself. But it is good to know that you have it covered!
DragonPilot - i didn't even think of the cleanoff out there. I imagine that might downscale kenman's thoughts a bit.
geospyder - most people around here think i'm crazy anyway, i have a "tea parties are for little girls playing dressup" bumper sticker, which could actually get you shot in some places in this county.

I recommend Kryolan Aquacolor- it's what I use for my clown/ drag make-up, and it's lasted all day through heat & parties.
It's a solid block that you apply with a wet make-up sponge. Once it's dry you use the Kryolan Spray-Fix to set it (or hairspray if you want to be cheap). Washes off with soap and water.
It's expensive, but it last for ages. Years in some cases.
I've also used both their Supracolor (professional theatrical creme-based make-up) and the Dermacolor (design for people with blemishes- super coverage, and great to wipe out my freckles completely. I've never seen another make-up cover like this). Kryolan is the only make-up I'll use for a base.
When you see the kids make-up kits around Halloween, most of the ones not made in China are from Kryolan.
FYI- tempera paint will stain your skin. In the case of reds/ black and purples you can get stained badly. Avoid it as body paint.

I'm going to warn ageist any acrylic paint if you plan on covering a large portion of your body with it. Simply because it doesn't allow your skin to breath, and can hasten effects like alcohol poisoning (assuming consumption, and large body coverage).
Like Eric above me said, Kryolan is the way to go. Even more so if you are plotting something detailed. But that's my opinion..
As for latex, I use "Liquid Latex Body Cosmetic" (it's also sold under other names) for shows and even used it on playa. For best results you need to keep some things in mind though..
1) Test yourself to see if you have a reaction to the product before committing to a full sized container of it.
2) Shave the complete area where you are going to use the latex right before you do.
3) Apply a mist coat of diluted oil (vegetable oil works), or a light amount of body lotion. You can also buy a product for this.. it usually has a ridiculously generic and to the point name. -- You can also skip this step if you want. But with it faint hairs missed in shaving normally don't stick to the latex.
4) Use a foam brush and feel free to get messy with your first coat. Let it dry a bit then add another, and another as needed.
5) The issue with liquid latex is it will stick to it's self (like at joints or anywhere the skin is going to bend). To prevent this use talcum powder or you can pick up a "shine" spry.
6)When removing it, roll a section like you would with rubber cement. Then pull slowly, a light mist of that oil spry can help. But in general you can roll the majority of it off. Whats left you just pick off as you see it.
As for on playa use, I did it inside a tent with the door open for ventilation. When taking it off I also did it inside a tent to prevent moop. During the daytime it's a little warmer then being shirtless, but I was also in black.. so.. yeah. - At night it's just like walking around with out a shirt on in 50 degree weather. Oh! if someone starts to peel it off of you, ask them to stop, contain, and remove the area to prevent moop.
Lastly, liquid latex can be sprayed on with an appropriate airbrush. Despite what the cool kids will tell you. (Although I've never done that on playa.)

I have a little bit of Savannah with me. Shhh...
Could someone offer advice about what to use for glow...blacklight glow? face paint, I only want to do maybe one or two colors and just a couple of small designs. I saw it was applied with a brush I think, not sure if there's a pen version? (NOT sharpie, hahaha, I SAW what THAT does to a human!)
I'm the MAN in a truck, burner who is stuck, you're in luck! I'll whip out my BIG tow chain and not charge you, not even one lousy buck!
Gracias TomServo, I want to do some simple dashes of red, some fire near my eyes...above shave line.
You sayin' flourescent paint, as in glows for blacklight and a paint brush?
It'll look cool (hot!) for the Flambe Art I will bring again, haha, this time I know how to block the breeze better...I'm glad the night air is calmer, ~Flambes look better at night
off topic for a sec, ~Volcano fire cocktails...was tricky finding just the right wind breaks. Next year I can enlist helpers to hold sheets up, also maybe find some large pavillion or dome or some big structure that'll have me...the drinks are mindblowing, citrus spiced candy coated glasses twirling in my hands on fire and then I ignite an edible gourmet firedust and the fire is 5 to 15 F*cking feet tall, sparkling, dazzling explosions and mushroom clouds and curtains and waterfalls of ~Fire...I like making them for folks and the drinks are delicious! Someday, once again, I'd like to do them with a topless gal on stilts creating the illusion of standing on my shoulders, she pours the firedust from a silver sea shell and I can get the flames 15 feet consistantly every time...probably need to keep it at 10 feet though, unless a double decker bus is our wind blocker, we'll see...probably just be me solo next year...I can stand on a crate or a bar and the flames will reach 5 to 10 easily
Takes a brave gal, LOL, ~)^^(~ to do it topless on stilts! need a pyro gal who can stilt walk
I make 150+ Flambes...I'll do ~Flambe bacon w/shine or everclear and ~Flambe pancakes w/rum, LOL
I thought some flames in red flourescent near my eyes would look appropriate, I have a few funkified tuxedos I like wearing...The Insane Maitre D' , LOL

Was it you, that gave out the Iron Cross necklaces this year? I love mine, but has nearly killed me at night.Shambala wrote:Misa, it looks like I dressed you there. You have one of my flashlight necklaces on and the stainless one. I see you didn't wash off the stamp of the Man either. :D
I'm trying to identify those boobs! Boobs are fun!(TM)

Yes Shambala, you did dress me up
I tried not to wash the stamp as long as possible and the flashlight necklase saved my ass one night in porta-pottie (as you said when you gave it to me!)...thank you once more. I still have it as well as the sun...ohh, I fastly recognized I have to take it off when I ant sleep, first time I cut my boob ha ha ha ha
I am looking forward to body painting again...I join it just like "ok, I want to try it, any volunteer?" and I ended up to paint for 5 hours
, I even missed the critical tits because the guy came and asked specificaly for me and said I can do whatever - who would say no to this

I wore mine last night, far more comfortable over a shirt than between bare boobies.Shambala wrote:No iron cross from me. Most of the ones I had, had the rays of the sun.
