Midnight Sun - Soliel du Minuit

Post by Kate_Montreal » Mon Jul 12, 2004 10:27 am

I feel incredibly lucky to live in Montreal. Last night the end of the Montreal Jazz Fest was celebrated by a free Cirque du Soliel show as a way of celebrating the 25th anniversary of Cirque and the Jazz Fest and of thanking the public who have made these artistic events possible.

Almost 150,000 people crowded around the stage in the middle of St. Catherine (a major street in Montreal) and watched the amazing Cirque performance of Midnight Sun. It was amazing and absolutely made me think about being at Burning Man but I really felt close to this year's theme when these performers carried a huge moon on their backs as though it weighed 1000 tons to the edge of the stage and threw it into the audience. It turned out to be a giant ball and a spot light followed it as we made this Midnight Sun travel throughout the masses. The show's theme concentrated on eclipses by exploring elliptical movements and contraptions and so it made me wonder whether I would see any art installations or playa-contraptions that explore eclipses or ecliptical movement. Anyone hear of anything?

I'd like to apologize for the above description of the event - I have a really bad flu and apparently a keen interest in using the same adjectives over and over and often in the same sentence.
redundantly yours, Kate
