Nevada landmark cut down

Post by Thecatman » Wed Jan 05, 2011 9:25 am

Heard this on KOH while driving home from work yesterday.
Seems this past Thursday or Friday some brain child took a chainsaw to the "Shoe Tree" on US 50 east of Fallon.
Middlegate is most furious about it. I threw an old pair of New Balance shoes in it on the way to Orem last year.

Was gonna post the Nevada Appeal article but a warning that read "All rights reserved. This material may not be broadcast, published, rewritten or redistributed" was shown.
If interested the article can be seen at www.nevadaappeal.com

dislike.

in my mind the destruction of the buddha by the taliban, or the Vandals in Rome, the chainsawing of this tree is similar in the damage it has done to many peoples psyches.

i drove by once in a truck in 1996, on my way to California for the first time.

i saw the tree and stopped. Probably had a cigarette, i hope i didn't litter, but at that point i'm afraid i had not learned the moop lesson.

And as most of you know, route 50, The lincoln highway is the Loneliest Road in America.

yes and No. It was part of the first transcontinental auto route and at one point a very important part of Our History.

think of all the people who have traveled THAT dusty highway...

i did, as i sat there in the middle of no fucking where looking at a shoe full of trees.

i had a moment...was glad no one was there but me, the tree, the desert. and feet held aloft.

I got my old pair of Van's back.

Sorry for the mess I left.

That tree is just to the East of Elko, on frontage road, out by the boy's farm.

Yeah it was a landmark and sorry to see it gone but...

there are people literally crying out here about it.

There was a dog found dead and skinned on the flag pole at the high school here and people weren't as up in arms about it.

You can rest assured somebody will erect a "roadside memorial" there.

The shoe tree in Virginia City might be next.

Oh yeah they are already talking about a memorial on 2/13 I believe. They have a facebook page for it..lol
Someone mentioned making a bench out of the tree, which isn't such a bad idea...

The dog thing just bothered me a whole lot more.

Churchill County High School. it was pretty disgusting and I don't think the police have busted anyone for it yet. Your pretty much guaranteed to make the local paper if you get arrested here. I think it happened in early November or late October (during soccer playoffs)

Yeah, the Nevada Appeal mentioned a memorial service sometime in February.
I might be wrong but I think the tree was on NDOT right of way, I know the wide spot there is.

I didn't hear abut a dog being flown from the flag pole either. I'm not disputin it.

I don't think it was flown or hoisted, just tied to it. I don't know though it might of been hoisted. The newspaper didn't run a picture of it. Lahontan Valley News

I just thought of this, maybe somebody is trying to un-icon US 50.
The loneliest telephone, near Sand Mountain, was removed several years ago.
Just a thought.

I've seen pictures of the Shoe Tree before. It was really cool. It's a shame someone had some time on their hands to destroy something that has been enjoyed for years.

We have these sculptures at Riverfront Part here in Spokane called The Joy of Running. It represents the largent footrace in the world, Bloomsday. And someone stole one of the runners which I believe was bolted to the ground. Fortuantely it was found and put back in it's rightful spot. I have to wonder what motivates people to be so darn rotten.
Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.
