my goals are to lose weight and tone up. Trying for 2 lbs a week. My metabolism sucks (in fact i take medication for it) so for me to lose weight I've got to really cut calories and exercise. I've got to start some weight training I think that will help with the metabolism/weight loss. I read something somewhere about how when women age they really need to up the weight training.

Thanks for the well wishes, I am going to keep posting here. I think it helps to announce successes as well as setbacks

Weight training is good. Just remember...everything in moderation. My personal feeling is that the whole point of losing weight is not to actually lose the weight, but to be able to keep it off for the rest of your life.

For me, I felt this objective would be better served by losing only one pound per week. It was less restrictive and allowed me to train myself to better habits that I would be able to continue after I was done losing.

Hell, it took me years to put on the extra thirty pounds...I didn't think it was realistic to take it off on any crash weight loss program that I wouldn't be able to continue once I hit my goal weight.

Now that I've hit my goal, I'm in heaven being able to eat 1930 calories per day!!! And taking walks ups my total intake to well over 2200 to 2500 calories...and I'm still maintaining!!! :) The big benefit is that I'm never hungry.

Just some thoughts. Whatever works for you is all that counts.

I put a push on here starting on December 7th, when I cut out all diet, caffeine soda. I also watched what I ate, which was only moderately successful due to the holidays. I increased my regular exercise and continued with cardio. I am down 4 solid pounds and on my way to losing 20 lbs. total. I think cutting out the diet coke really helped a lot. I am also a much calmer person. I was drinking as much as a litre a day. I'm also sleeping better.

Congratulations!

I feel the same way about sodas, diet or otherwise. I wish my partner would stop drinking them...he's well over a liter a day. At least he switched to caffeine free.

It's interesting that statistics show that people that share their weight loss/fitness goals and experiences along the way, have a remarkably greater success rate. So, there is no doubt in saying that eplaya fitness club helped.

Yes I too need to cut out the diet pepsi. It's the first thing I drnk in the morning. Today I've had 3 so far and it is 4pm. I will try and only drink 1 more today. I think I will do some research and see how it effects weight loss, maybe that will help with cutting back on it.

Wow -- looks like Andy Warhol was right, and I'm getting my 15 minutes of fame!

Yes, this thread does seem to help. In fact, I was feeling gloomy and was going to skip a good opportunity for a walk this afternoon, but I happened to check in on the 'puter, and you folks got me off my duff and out on the trail!

And I have proof:

Image

No, not the leftovers of my lunch, but probably somebody's lunch. This deer was right by the old ranch house, which suggests that the chase originated deeper in the forest and ended when the deer ran into the corrals and other fences around the ranch house.

Could have been coyotes, or a mountain lion. A couple of years ago, very deep in this forest, I came across something similar, except that it was dripping fresh. So I figured I was interrupting somebody's meal. I walked calmly out of there -- making my self as large and loud as I could... calmly.

As for caffeine, it is definitely a poison. Last I heard, Red Bull was banned in my native Norway. Back when I drove 18-wheelers, I sometimes had to drive all night in order to deliver a load on time, and I would guzzle Mountain Dew to make it thru the night. Then I'd feel ill for a week. So I don't do that kind of work anymore!

Coffee in quantity puts MyLarry to sleep, he's a half-caf trucker. I drink two to three cups a day; if I do not, my arthritis, and my asthma, get worse.

We went on vacation to Southern Utah, the freezing weather followed us and I had a terrible cold, maybe even a flu thing. I did get a bit of mild hiking in Snow Canyon (strongly recommended state park). My knees hated me the next day. Sat in the hot tub a lot and admired the snow/red rock view. I didn't eat too much, being sick, and the champagne is unopened. I am home now, still hacking and tired. The outdoor air quality is "red", we have an inversion and the pollution is quite high. I wheeze after a few minutes. Lovely.

I gained a pound, but that could be water weight.

This is true.. partially. Everything in moderation as with everything. The word is that up to 60-80mg a day.. basically one cup of coffee.. is do-able and in fact aids metabolism in a good way. Past that though, you are prematurely aging your body by putting undue stress on it.. throwing your hormones out of whack.. digestion.. stomach lining.. everything. It's nasty stuff.

I have my one.. one.. cup in the morning. But, I also take a super high potency powdered multi-vitamin that is crazy high in B complex (http://www.vitacost.com/All-One-Nutrite ... er-2-2-lbs) which gives me incredible energy all day. I can so tell when I forget to take it because my energy is blah and my hunger is through the roof. When your body is naturally supplemented with the nutrients that it needs, you just don't crave food like you usually do. This along with 50-100 g of whey protein a day and wow.. the results are unreal in the last year and a half.

I take a senior multi-vitamin every day...though am beginning to wonder why. I definitely don't think mega-doses of vitamins are good for a person either. Anything beyond the amount the body can use will either be pissed away or be toxic in the long (sometimes the short) run.

It's not hurting anything, that's for sure. Whatever your body doesn't need, it will discharge. It's kind of like giving it all you can and letting it take what it needs, and you individual nutrient needs may differ from day to day.

It would also depend on your individual body type/age/activity level. I take a "Seniors" formula, but I'm a 35 year old extremely active person that surfs 3-4 times a week, bikes 10-15 miles a day on the exercise bike and weight trains on any off day that I don't surf.

Still yet, I would love to see any study that shows there to be a detrimental effect from taking a high potency multi-vitamin complex daily.. The benefits far, far outweigh any potential negatives I would venture to say.

Some vitamins can be toxic in excess. I'll have to do the google, but vitamin A sticks in my mind. It is a fat soluble vitamin, not water soluble, it stores up rather than flushes.

Individual health and situation must be taken into consideration, what is good for one person here may be toxic to another. For example, men should never take iron unless directed to do so by a doctor. MyLarry's body retains iron, it settles in his joints; he has iron linings in his knuckles. I worry it will decide his organs are a good resting place. He's given enough blood until he became anemic, yet he cannot take iron supplements, too dangerous. So while my daily vitamin has iron, he must take a different one. One without too much A, D or C, which may help bind iron into the red blood cells. He takes B complex when he remembers.

Whey powder makes me queasy. Not my protein of choice.

No sup's for me.. I watch close what I cook.. Rarely eat out... Mostly veggies.. I don't get along well with milk stuff and most of the comom additives..

A lot of that stuff ends up in pain for me.. Some additives knock me out..

I use a lot of spices and pepper so I'm happy with what I can have..

I suggest water and air for starters, seems we all have a lot of "crummy" foods to cut out....now Vitamin & Supplement confusion?! :?

JS! I order my vits from vitacost too! They seem cheaper, watch the dosages, the wording is cleverly misleading... stiil, prices seem to be good for the quality.

I take Vit C, Calcium w/D together for muscle relaxer effects, Vit E for the heart, and a multi...sometimes a Vit B...or just have a teaspoon of honey for cheaper Vit B (it tricks the body into thinking it's getting Vit B I was told)

My energy level and feeling better coincides with getting plenty of fruit and vegies and fish...I'm mostly an "Aquatarian"
I'm the MAN in a truck, burner who is stuck, you're in luck! I'll whip out my BIG tow chain and not charge you, not even one lousy buck!

Lol.. that was just the first link that came up when I googled in a hurry. I get my stuff from whoever has it cheapest. I use google product search for almost all my online non-ebay shopping. If you haven't used it, go to google and click the "shooping" link in the upper right and search for a product. Works great..

All-One has been around for 30+ years now and has been a natural products industry staple. They make super good, dependable multi-vitamins. It's not too extreme in any way, just very complete. The only part about it is that it's a powder and tastes completely nasty. But.. it's in a bran base that is gentler on your stomach that pills and absorbs better since there are no binders. I take it with two scoops of vanilla whey protein along with a couple of flax caps and glucosamine/chondrotine/MSM in the morning and it's fine. Yeah.. I'm a supplementer.. but I'm a witness to the change in my own body and health within a relatively short amount of time.

..I'm also in the natural products industry myself for my "day" job.. so I hear all the ins and outs and whats BS and what's not. Honestly it's interesting as a company owner that works with formulators to really be able to hear as a consumer the latest fad of either fear or hype and then know the other side of what is reality and what isn't. That's another story though.

Make my water filtered..

Tis city is over a hundred years, So are the water mains..

The tap water in the mornig looks like piss.. If you boil it it smells like wet dog..
City said .. Shut up and drink you pissie water.. The house is a 1956 with some lead pipe under the brick floor....So I get the water to filter from the new bathroom.. Next is a plumbing in a new water heater.. eleven hundred bucks.. You would not believe where that sucker is tucked in..

Thinking of getting a atmoshpic water generator..

That would take us off grid even more.. We are on septic now..

Wondermuss! Yes, this is a little bit of a drift away from our own fitness campaigns, but oh so important! Donating blood helps other people regain their health! Since we are accustomed to living in a "do-ocracy", it is perfect for us. We see a need, and we step up and do it. And there is pretty much always a shortage of blood.

Granted, like Burning Man, giving blood is not for everyone. But I recommend it to those of us who are medically qualified. To me, there is practically no discomfort at all.

Sunday tomorrow.... I got my "sermon" delivered a day early! LOL

upjohn, don't drink the water!! sounds nasty. I've been to Salem  ?!

I saw in the Fuck thread all the food allergy tid bits, Gahh! more fine tuning...I'd like more anti-inflamatory food discussion. Interesting stuff about it in the Fuck thread. More food bashing please.

Elliot, I think they give ice cream at my bloodbank, shucks, I usually forget it anyway, haha...maybe they have sherbet, less fat etc.

I just came in to sweep the floor and wash some windows.
Then I'm going for a walk, with less coffee in my system, it's all good.

All right, then. :) Goal: back to 4 workouts a week OR 15 per calendar month, by the end. (I give myself that flexibility so I don't kick myself too much if I only get 3, or [egad] 2 in a week . . . the month is not then a total wash, fitness-wise). When either statistic is met, I really tend to like how I look & feel. I have little tricks to help keep these numbers up--I use colored stars on a wall calendar. That way I can't lie to myself & say "Oh, I've been averaging 3 or 4 per week" . . . when there were very clearly 3 weeks in December when I only managed twice a week.

The ideal workout for me is 45 min of cardio (running or elliptical), some ab stuff, & either pushups--or several sets of chest press at 30-35 lbs and maybe one other arm machine.

Or, one hour of dance class. I'm thinking of joining 1 or 2 dance classes to give myself something fun.

I know what seems to work for me; I just get very low-energy in the winter (and god--it seemed like I didn't have a single moment to myself in December).

Since I'm in the PNW, I take a 5,000 I.U. vitamin D3 supplement to try to counter any possible vitamin D deficiency, which I'm supposed to pay extra attention to as a person of color. (I take this in addition to fish oil, calcium/magnesium/zinc, vitamin B complex & sam-e amino acid for mood & joint.)

Since we're all sharing our caffeine consumption: I'm very fond of a large cup of coffee in the morning. When I'm mindful, I drink a big cup of organic green tea in the afternoon though; two bags. (Ideally, I could replace the morning coffee with another mug of tea, but in the winter, that's crazy talk.) I would like to consume as much as the Japanese do, for the rumored anti-cancer benefit. The catechins are also supposed to enhance weight loss in exercisers.

Sounds like a plan to me.

BTW What color are you?

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Well done, Elorrum. Is it a white-knuckle ride so far, or easier than expected?

I tried cold turkey last last week to see how it would work. It was nasty, so I went back to the drawing board and purchased some lozenges. Had one cigarette a day plus lozenges through the weekend, and then smoked the last one cigarette for the day and last cigarette Tuesday. It's not too bad. I can reduce frequency and strength of the lozenges (first thing in the morning, after a meal) and forsee this finishing up in about three weeks. As long as I'm still turning to the nicotine, I don't feel like I've really quit, but I am progressing and that's what I'm working at.

LOL
:D
Donating has health benefits for the donor as well. Helps lower cholesterol or something I'd have to look up. As a cancer survivor, they no longer want my blood, I used to donate when I could.
