I have absolutely no problem plonking people, and I do it whenever I feel the need. In the "real world" I don't talk to someone I find annoying or hang out with people who are just out to cause problems, I don't see any reason to do it on here.
There are plenty of people I disagree with who I don't plonk, the ones I do have to have a pretty blatant intent to be an asshole (IMHO).
I have un-plonked two people when I saw responses to them that seemed like they were actually contributing, so I looked at their recent posts and made the call.

Not yet. There has been one that imho posts random disjointed silly things so far off topic that the mom in my wants to shake her/him. and i almost plonked, but then he/she said something really clever and on point that helped me with a construction issue. one of those oh hell moments.

I am now a plonker because it is nearly impossible for me to ignore posts. If my ire was down and my ignoring up I would not plonk.C.f.M. wrote:Y'all take this way more seriously than I do. Plonking somebody would require that they ire me enough to make the effort. Ignoring is just as efficient.

Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.

I thought plonk was a game. Kinda like bouncing quarters into a cup of beer. Now I'm gonna hafta try it, just to see how it works. Hmmmm..... I wonder who I should plonk.

Ahhh, a Pachinko machine. We had one in my house growing up. Of course it's not the same as in the Pachinko Parlors on Okinawa filled with chain smoking Okinawan's swilling Kirin or Suntory.ygmir wrote:

I've never plonked anyone, because (so far) my curiosity overcomes my irritation, but I'm glad it's an option. If I found myself becoming unhappily riled to no end or purpose, I would consider it. Allowing some troll to continuously raise my blood pressure is not--to me--an acceptable option.
I can ignore people I don't like far more easily online than in real life. Now that's where the actual plonking happens.

Plonking is the ultimate way to ignore someone. Not much different than choosing what programs to watch on TV.maryanimal wrote:No plonkage going on here. I think ignoring people is the best thing all around. I think plonking is a personal thing like, "should I wear underwear today or go commando".![]()
What gets me at times are people who go into perfectly great threads and imposing their negative selves or opinions on an apparent innocent comment. It's like people try to purposely ruin a great thread.
Personally, I like to announce who I plonked when I plonk them.
It helps to make eplaya an even more pleasurable experience for me.

Ditto, I was on the other end of the modem (Sysop), I started with an acoustic (remember when phones had handsets and dials?). I was part of a network that swapped message files in the wee hours in order to maintin forums with global participants back when the web was used exclusively by govt and academia. The gyrations we used to go through for what is such a simple thing today.JStep wrote:I have been posting online since the 80's when I dialed into my local BBS with a 300 baud modem, I did the Usenet thing, I was active on IRC.
As many have indirectly indicated, for me, a much more useful function would be to plonk threads. So to the answer the question, I've only plonked one user and that's only because said user initiated said thread and continually updates on a topic that's of little interest to me (and frankly has been done better elsewhere). If that user posted in any other threads I'd have no problem reading whatever they had to say. Apart from that, as it is now I have to make mental notes which forums have techno youtube barrages so as to ignore the "not read" indicators.
I don't see the point in empowering nameless words on the screen to upset me enough to not want to read them. Many times the impression one gets from online personas is a far cry from reality (anonymity has a funny way of doing that).
